Sort of like the Mexican quincenera or whatever where a girl becomes a woman at 15 and it’s celebrated, getting your license and car at 16 as an American youth is basically a sign that your of age to be responsible, and that your parents give you a very large degree of freedom and trust because you now have the means to go wherever you want whenever you want. It’s a coming of age ceremony. Also it allows parents to let thier young adults drive themselves to school and sports activities meaning they get a lot more free time so most parents are very happy to teach and provide a cheap car. It’s such a big part of American culture that my boomer coworkers get upset when thier children don’t show interest or want to learn how to drive and get licensed. Though the majority of teenagers jump at the opportunity to get more freedom with a car.
