americans call this a tractor
>>
>>27604870
Yes, it is called a tractor because it pulls. If the pushed, they probably probably would be called something else entirely. A simple case of Latin and English word etymology.
>>
>>27604886
James May you call it a lorry innit
>>
>>27604895
Yes, I call it a lorry, but the word tractor does make sense in the English language, albeit, it is a little bit strange to consider that what we call a tractor, was once known as a traction engine.

In fact, I almost bought a traction engine last year (albeit a small ride-on one, which would cost 10k). Steam is a very expensive hobby.
>>
>>27604870
Not all Americans, it’s really a regional thing. Some call them Semis or 18 wheelers.
>>
>>27604907
Yeah I've never heard anyone call it a tractor ever

terms I have heard used
>truck
>big rig or just rig
>semi
>18 wheeler

and occasionally they just refer to it by the make, Peterbilt or whatever
>>
>>27604916
I've heard tractor trailer being used
>>
>>27604886
Actually a tractor can push or pull.
>>
>>27604907
>>27604916
what do they call it when it's detatched from a trailer, 10 wheeler?
>>
>>27604870
Depends on where you live in the US. Lots of different names. Think of the US like the EU with every state being it's own country.
>>
>>27604942
Yes.
>>
>>27604916
I'm the only one who calls them "lorry" in my redneck logistics company that houses a lot of them, and everyone looks at me like i swallow cum.
>>
>>27604939
Yes, but, what I am trying to get at is that the word tractor comes from trahere in Latin, which means "to pull".

Also, volvo in Latin means "I crash".

"Tractor" was a brand name. It was a steam-powered (afik) traction-engine with actual tracks. I saw one for sale, maybe twenty years ago.

>>

At auctions these are listed as “road tractors” and the farm tractors listed as tractors. In common use they are just called tractors.
>>
>>27605167

yes, on official DMV documents that thing is a "tractor cab". I drive one
>>
If you go far back in time far enough they basically were tractors.
>>
>>27605173
Ok well that's retarded, why do I care?

>>27605174
Nope, never heard anyone here say tractor, you mean tractor trailer, two words never divorced from head other.
You will only hear tractor trailer, and if they're in the industry, bobtail or deadhead. Trailer or not, it's tractor trailer

you cant even do a minigun comparison because lorries are as big as it gets on the roads.

It unironically is.
IIRC german army wanted a tractor that could do highįay speeds and merc made unimog.
Wonder how cursed it would be if I were to body swap a w208 on it.
>>
>>27606439
>Man why do americans call them semi trucks while referring to a pickup as a truck.
It comes from the trailer, which is a "semi-trailer" because it only has wheels at one end and needs the other end to be supported by the tractor.
>>
>>27604971
that's a backhoe, ive heard more people call it an excavator or claw than a tractor

Picrel is a tractor.

>>27606439
>Man why do americans call them semi trucks while referring to a pickup as a truck.
Because it pulls a semi trailer. It is the prime mover pulling the semi trailer in a tractor configuration.

>>27604916
I do see it used but it's more of a technical/industry term than normal parlance. Tractor trailer is more common along with the ones you listed.

To differentiate it from straight trucks and to convey that it's made up of a semi tractor and a semi trailer.

The German term LKW likewise also refers to all trucks. That combination in particular is called a Sattelzug.

Station Wagon

- The American Heritage Dictionary says a station wagon is “an automobile with one or more rows of seats behind the driver and no trunk but a compartment with plenty of space you can load through a tailgate.”

You use it to go tailgating. It was the minivan and the SUV of its day.

The “station” in the station wagon refers to a train station. The first powered station wagons were custom-built Model T, a car with enough space in the rear to bring several people and their luggage from the train station to their country estate…and back again.

While we started calling them station wagons, the British referred to them, and still do, as an estate car, the Australians call them simply wagons.

The modern design of a station wagon reached its peak in the 1960s with compact, mid-size and full-size wagons. The back door could be up or down or open to the side.

After the gasoline crisis of the 1970s, the station wagon began to lose popularity, the minivan design was more practical, and then came the SUV.
