We had a "32 in the shop that looked almost identical (typical build). Owner brought it in for some refresh work. It was 30 years ago, can't even remember what we did to it.
But when we were done about a week later he was out for a Sunday drive. He got sideways through some water on a turn (busted sprinkler head on someone's lawn) and when those rear tires hooked back up the car flipped into a concrete retaining wall.
It was totalled.

Just something for the guy building the model A to remember. Those old coupes are so light that they do unexpected things. A camry or Silverado would have made it through that turn without even noticing the water.
>>
>>27611171
I was actually wondering.
Since the body Ines are relatively simple....
It would be cool and "somewhat easy" to fab a stebside bed for that thing.
Like bob the frame and move the rear axle forward and have the tiniest bed you could fit without the proportions getting too out if whack

this is why i fucking hate ford. every truck i looked at today had a split or folding bench with either no headrest or removable headrests. what the fuck is this abomination in this truck. the base sits between my shoulder blades and the permenant manlet height headrest contours into the base of my spine. i cannot sit in this fucking hellhole for an hour without developing debilitating neck and back pain. who the fuck thought this was a good idea? ford. only fucking ford. fuck ford

Was hoping to hold off on the engine rebuild until after I got her driving, but it looks like I'll be doing it much sooner rather than later. She's leaking oil and coolant real bad.
Also, she doesn't stay running without the choke, so I gotta figure that out too.
Otherwise, I feel like I'm making good progress.

does a ford fag know the depth of 96-07 e250 rotor/hubs and if they match with '87-'94 F250 hubs, obviously they have an abs tone ring so not a direct interchange, im looking at an 87 F350 front end but it's a dually, PAP is going to make me pay for hubs and rotors so i'd rather swap them to SRW at the jy if they fit

tl;dr overnight parts from Australia?

Finally getting around to checking the bearing clearances on my 351 Cleveland. My machinist told me I did the plastigauge wrong, so I have to do it again. If the bearing clearances are in fact too tight, he said he's going to have to remachine the journals instead of changing bearings, because 351 Clevelands are so rare and parts are hard to find.
Apparently Clevelands are abundant in Australia. I've heard so, and every Cleveland build video on YouTube has an Aussie accent. Could I find some bearings from them potentially? How do you gain access to the Australian side of the web?
>>
>>27613152
Not sure what your machinist is on about. Clevelands weren't as common as Windsors but weren't exactly rare either.
Summit has standard, one, ten, and twenty thous in stock. Maybe his guy just sucks?
https://www.summitracing.com/search/part-type/main-bearings/make/ford/engine-size/5-8l-351/engine-family/ford-cleveland?N=filter-options%3Ain-stock
>>
>>27613206
I think maybe his supplier sucks then. Noted. I'll pass that along to him, thanks.
>>
>>27613206
It may have been the rod bearings he was talking about in regards to that, though. I haven't checked the rods yet, just doing the mains right now.
>>
>>27613152
Aussies took the 351C design and did there own stuff (302C (3" stroke x 4" bore) etc. anyway they kept using them and have a good bit of aftermarket.

I see you have 4 bolt main, a variant of one of the 4V engines ? cant remember if they used them in trucks may ("heavy duty")

I may check with the Aussies then if I can't find anything on summit.
It is a 4V engine. It's from and going back into a 73 Ranchero. Had the garbage open chamber heads. I'm going with some edelbrock heads from summit, don't remember exactly which ones. Machinist bumped our compression up to 10:1 with different pistons.

Asking here cuz you guys wrench the most.

Realistically, what can a tech bro working 9-5 and living in an apartment accomplish in a few weeks? I'd like to fix up an old $<5k S10 or Ford ranger as an ugly n proud camper instead of spending $35k on a new truck, but I don't know what I'm getting myself into.

Can a noob realistically "refurbish" an old truck over a few weeks and make it reliable, or do you just have to accept that something major could shit itself at any moment?
>>
>>27615187
bayou state sounds like it sucks

those rc trucks in your garage nitro?
>>
>>27615192
depends and theres really no replacement for experience

my s10 was reliable only because i was constantly fixing little shit before it broke, i could have gone through excruciating effort to make everything new, but just getting a different vehicle was easier because even on old shit that much effort is rarely necessary

the fairmont it replaced just needed new o rings on the tranny cooler lines, every 500 miles or so id pull 2 plugs to clean the oil off, and that motor i knew nothing about barely leaked anything, i actually got myself into trouble pre-emptively replacing brake parts and all the aftermarket for that car was shit quality that didn't work

tl;dr just treat a classic car like any used car, dont over do it, reliability is a reflection of personal skill not a mechanical capacity to not fail

have a trusty 2000's usa made Hanson left hand drill and extractor set that worked well with penetrant heat. used in similar snap flush bolt on intake exhaust manifolds, and pressure sensor ports, etc. Not sure how well the current chink Irwin sets are but probably still better than HF

Before panicking and gearing up for war, the bolt shouldn't be stuck or anything and tapping the remains out with the corner of a sharp chisel will probably work.

"Typically, a chisel is placed against the side or edge of a bolt and a hammer is used to drive the cutting edge of the chisel into the bolt to impart rotational force."

Well you shouldn't spend any of your time, paid or otherwise, looking at cars you have no intention of buying. That's just an overall waste of time.

Assume that anyone selling you anything used is going to be lying. This is how it goes, especially with cars and houses. Realtors are scum just like used car salesmen and greedy boomers trying to offload their rusted bondo box to some unwitting zoomie.
>>
>>27622686
If something was in advertised condition, I WOULD be interested in buying what I look at. Even if I look at stuff priced high above market value in hopes of the premium netting something solid, they are worse than described. If I had a known quantity from someone I know and knew exactly what's wrong, I'd be willing to pay a large premium. So basically unless it's housefire pricing I've become apathetic from getting burned so much.
I really just thinking of hunting non runners sitting in yards locally now to avoid the facebook shit.

Pls /o I'm not a poster here but I could use some help. Just took delivery of this 1980 Toyota cressida. It runs, but I can't remove the key from the ignition without getting an obnoxious droning whine. It stays after the door is closed and the car is completely off. Internet got nothing and I searched with different keys words etc etc multiple times. I don't wanna ignore a noise I don't know overnight, and I also have 0 intention of leaving the keys in the ignition overnight.

idiots flaming the thread for the past year over what a classic is

>isnt it a b or c body
basically theyre all the same
>>
>>27622686
Seems obvious, but this.
100% this.
>split exhaust manifold (cast iron) that was hidden under a shrowd
>huge rust spots hidden under mountains of bondo
>entire underside covered in surface rust, hidden under an undercoating
>fuel tank completely rusted (despite saying otherwise on the listing)
>muffler and resonator both blown out (conveniently on the side that's hardest to see)

Eh, it was only 600$ so I'm not too jazzed about it. It's been fun wrenching and learning on it.
>>
>>27623508
Lots of cars have indicators that you left the keys in or you left the lights on or something. Does it sound like one of those? If it does then you probably have a bad switch somewhere. See if you can find an electrical diagram of the car and find out where it's coming from.
Like other anon said, disconnect battery until you figure it out
Goodluck

Post collection
>>
How did you decide on your classic?
Happenstance? Family car? Or did you seek it out?
>>
>>27627133
Almost all of them are happenstance. The Fordson 7v was something we saw in the corner of a barn when buying another car, the FIAT 500 was just something my brother was selling so I thought "why not?", and the V8 Pilot was something my dad always wanted, but just never had until some guy we were working with mentioned he knew another guy selling one.
>>
>>27615192
My advice to wrenching noobs is to get a workshop manual. Look up manuals for the trucks you are thinking of buying. They’ll lead you through troubleshooting, service and repairs.

Wtf is with Wagoneer prices? After the loss of my expedition, I'm really feeling the impact of not having a full size SUV (explorer doesn't count), so I've decided to consolidate my classic car fetish and full size SUV fetish into a classic SUV.

The only 2 things that fit my desires are a K5 and a classic wagoneer/Cherokee. Unfortunately they both suffer from either being just shit boxes for 3k or primo 25k+ restorations. The very few I can find for the same value as my Galaxie are almost always jacked up and won't fit in my garage (or their overpriced shit boxes).

Guess selling the Galaxie is the easiest way to go but God damn.

looking at whats available on rockauto, I would go with the SKF part
SKF is german and they made good parts, from my experience (I've bought wheel bearings and such from them)
Uro parts I've heard nothing good about, and the other ones are literal whos I've never heard of

you might also look at places like FCP Euro or maybe even pelican parts as well

posted about this barge i just got in another thread. 67 dodge phoenix, i.e. RHD plymouth fury of the same year. Has a 383 engine in it, and even though it's running like shit and most certainly needs a rebuild, it still sounded fucking mean, i love it. interior looks nice, but window cranks are really hard to turn, and for the quarter windows, they only sometimes open them lol.
currently has a 2 barrel carb on it, thinking of getting an AVS2. Anyone have experience with AVS2 and holley snipers? The cool boomer I talked to warned me away from the latter though, saying the AVS2 is almost just as good without as much of the headache, at this point I'm just curious as to what you guys experiences with both are.

While doing piecemeal part collection for my driveline rebuild, and general restoration I've taken to spending a little to limp the engine along until rebuild using little upgrades here and there and it's actually amazing how much a difference some small parts can make on an old engine. Makes me realize how much my family abuses/abused their cars. Spark plug gapping, timing, and retuning the carb is next. Ordered a vintage timing light, and a new vacuum gauge... As well as some other misc tools to make the job easier for my roadside toolbox. Polishing a turd until I can give her the rebuild she deserves.

Anyone else running VP Octanium? Local state stations swapped to E10 so I've been running Sta-bil and an octane booster. Normally just el cheapo STP, but I wanted to try the VP fuels octane booster. Seems to work the trick. But I hear it can cause cosmetic discoloration on the plugs that make diagnosing actual problems later harder? Experiences?
