Well since I'm not using my front swaybar brackets for anything I guess that's a good place to ground the alt to the frame. Need to add an engine to frame ground next. Unless since the alt case is grounded to the engine through its bolts does this count as grounding the frame to the engine too?

That specific NP208 has a housing bolt pattern shared by no one else.
They actually took the bolt pattern and flipped it like 60 degrees or some shit so the gasket would work but you cant swap between a Ford or Mopar (if I'm remembering this correctly, shoot me if it's dodge that did it).
So if you need a donor you have to find like a 78-85 or whatever 208 whereas the other 2 can use an NP20X or Borg Warner from any year and it will bolt up.

Got hit in an accident in my Volkswagen GLI. Recently bought a 2010 Ford F-150 5.4 3v FX4. Got it in North Dakota and drove it back to Montana were I immediately replaced the rear wheel seals, differential fluid, diff gasket, diff cover, new trans fluid, an oil change later and sent it up to White Sulphur off-roading. Absolutely hands down one of the best vehicles I have ever owned.

Any recommendations for something affordable and used? Anything toyota is automatically out the window, people selling 4runners and tacomas here with 150k miles on them for 30k+.
the only lexus gx 470s within 500 miles of me are two decades old at this point and people are selling them for 35k - ish with nearly 200k miles.

offroading blew up here since covid and anything thats relatively big and capable is pretty much fucked. I'd also like to avoid jeeps, because the only jeeps I've ever been around have been heinously unreliable trash cans. I won't be rock crawling, but I do need clearance, preferably 4wd and hopefully enough space to sleep in.
>>
>>27627590
Xterras if you can find them, but you can't around me anymore, they all got bought up during covid. Theres like 10 and they are all in bad shape, lmao.

Frontiers however are also a solid/cheap choice, people don't like them because they are dated as fuck looking and have no tech, but you can find 2020 pro 4x models with low mileage for 24k or less. The bed is only 5' so don't think you could sleep in in though unless you leave the gate down and don't give a fuck. I would, in the desert at least.
>>
>solid front axle, or are you an IFS larper

>>27627590
Covid ruined everything outdoors and thanks to the internet turning everyone into some fuckhead grifter they all know wut dey got. You gotta have cash ready and be hounding the ads everyday. Setup alerts for models you’re interested in and be ready to buy that afternoon in the event some non-shithead posts something cool up for sale. Believe it or not it still happens once in a while within 50 miles of your town

This probably is stupid but /org/ might have some common sense on the subject. I need new tires for my model s p85 (no dual motors) on 19 inch wheels and it seems most tires do not last so I was thinking of just going cheap but pic rel caught my eye. Still cheap and they might actually work out better for my driving needs. I drive on silt, sand, dirt, and most of the time the road, only occasionally through mud. I have seen people with them on model y teslas but nothing on a model s.
>>
>>27627723
Bad in cold weather.
You're probably incorrectly inflating your tyres too. Look up the chalk test.
>>
>>27627723
What's the weight vs the oem tires?
Probably not worth it, just get some road tires with the mud/ snow rating and call it good.
>>
>>27627712
Yeah I heard about the squeak problem, so I made sure to goober them up as much as possible on all surfaces in a polyurethane safe grease. Hopefully the grease will stay on there for a good while.

They did stiffen up the handling a response a fair amount so I'm happy about that.
>>
>>27627703
>Practically impossible to find anything reasonable with 4wds since covid.
I agree it's gotten worse (what hasn't) but you guys aren't looking hard enough. Still gems out there. XJs that need a little work are still cheap. YJs that need a little work are still cheap. Xterras are going up in price now but can still be found cheap in the right places. Old Mitsubishis, Suzukis, S10s are still out there.
>>
>>27627768
I hardly do cold weather and tire pressure is good, just they don't last that long and are already at 3/32nds. Pic rel is what I have on there currently and are good tires just expensive for 30k miles.

Set of 4 Michelin primacy mxm4 = $1674
Set of 4 falken wildpeaks = $1059
Set of 4 lexani lx-twenty = $541

Falkens have a 65k mile warranty
Michelins have a 45k mile warranty
Lexanis have a 30k mile warranty
>>
>>27627781

You're trying to min/max tires like a spec class race circuit that limits how many tires you can buy in a season.
You're not a racecar driver.
You're not scaling MOAB.
You're not crossing the Sahara.
If you drive so aggressively on the street that the difference in tire performance can be noticed in your stopping distance then you need to suck start a shotgun.
The cheapest tires at Walmart will do everytbing the tires you listed will do.
>>
>>27628149
>You're trying to min/max tires like a spec class race circuit that limits how many tires you can buy in a season.
Do you know what is cheaper than a jew? A scot and an antisemite. Besides I am just being autistic about it, as a daily I want a good reliable tire that will last. I care less about stopping distance and more on the handling and maintaining traction when I have to drive in the desert during storms since I am often driving on/off backroads. Other concerns are road noise, comfort, and since it is an ev the difference in range the tires cause.

Magwell grip is popular for close quarter combat training like room clearing.
Shorter grip radius between the two hands = faster side to side movement.
Holding the weapon farther out has the opposite effect which means less point of aim shift with ranged targets.
I would say it's a well trained squad that's covering the standard 5m, 15m and 50m kill zones.

Seriously considering buying a gen 2 4runner with 175k on it
Would it be a mistake?
>>
>>27631761
As your daily? Yeah that wouldn't be a great idea. As a secondary? Excellent idea.

Parts availability is gonna be more of a concern the older you go, plus rust and dry rot are now considerations on everything like weatherstripping/window seals, etc.
>>
>>27631774
>plus rust and dry rot are now considerations on everything like weatherstripping/window seals, etc.
I've got that problem on mine. The frame is pretty solid, but the brake drums are chewed through and the lines concern me. The gen 2 I'm looking at looks mint, the guy took care of it. Haven't seen the frame on it yet tho.
>>
>>27631782
If it looks too good to be true it probably is. Short of him or a previous owner doing a full on restoration, there's probably some hidden shit going on. Frame is #1 concern but on any vehicle that age and mileage basically be prepared for the engine to grenade at any moment, so many unknowns from its lifetime.

I generally buy vehicles when they're relatively new, i.e 5-6 years old, then keep them forever. That way I have a fairly good idea of everything they've gone through in their lives.

They switched to a 3.5 V6 in 2016. Toyota says it'll give you 278hp vs the 260hp of the 4.0. But like any smaller displacement engine they've had to cope. It's got direct injection, this bothers some people. Lack of low end torque means you're going to be hammering the throttle a lot more just to get going, might be less bothersome if you're used to driving sluggish vehicles. Has to work harder to get up into the power range, +5,000rpm for peak horsepower and about the same for peak torque.

I've driven 4Runners, my FJ, older Tacos with the 4.0 and a 2022 Taco with the 3.5. The new Taco feels slower than all of them and weaker too, the gas pedal just felt like mush the whole time and I was thoroughly disappointed. That was in its stock form, so granted you can tune and mod it. But if you use it offroad you can factor in weight additions will only slow it down more, and low end torque is your best friend offroad.

I'm just not sold on them personally, NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT BRUTHER.

Plus the 4.0 is known to be very receptive to super charging, Toyota even offered a TRD supercharger kit for many years that pushed the 4.0 up to about 330hp from the original 240/260.

Purely hypothetical question. If you were to build a gigantic truck emulating the style of the original Bigfoot, what is the biggest tire size + lift combination that would still be driveable (to an extent) on the street? The 66-inch tires monster trucks use now are out of the question, and while I love the look of the 48-inch tires the original Bigfoot had, I think they might stick out the side too far to be street-legal. I know 42-44s are all the rage with rock-crawling now. Any experts wanna weigh in?

One has an '85 toyota on 44" super swampers (obviously it's like a 10 or 12 inch lift, I forget) and he gets on 3 wheels doing a U turn because the CG is so stupidly high.

Sick, so the 48s seem pretty feasible then. I think I’d want a better tread than the old-school terra though. Those 58s are insane.
>>27632115
Yeah my family used to have a Jeep with a 4” lift and 37s which wasn’t too bad to DD. 44s on a Toyota truck is insane lol.
>>27632118
Hell yeah. My dream truck is a ‘77 Ford and I’ve always wanted to build one and basically copy the style of the original Bigfoot trucks. I don’t think I would go quite as extreme but I would want to get as close as I could while still having some semblance of off-road usability and being strong enough to handle the massive tires.

Speaking of which, what axle would you need to handle, say, 48s? I don’t know if a standard Dana 44 would cut it, and I don’t know what Bigfoot used.

>>
>>27633159
If you're talking about repairs out on the trails then no. It's not just the type of clearance you have while sitting in the driveway- chances are when you break something offroad you'll be in a bad spot and have to fight rocks and ruts just to get to the broken component.

Find a spot in the engine bay to strap a tool set to the fender. They actually make under hood lock boxes for jeeps but they're overpriced for what they are.
Under seat.
Bag on back of seat.
Inside spare wheel.
>>
>>27633223
This is why the frunk and smugglers bay on the Cybertruck are so underrated, I can easily fit a full pelican case of tools and all my recovery gear in either.
>>

>>27633269
>you're not getting a cybertruck down a trail

>>
>>27633297
HELL YEA BROTHER
>>
>>27633223
Not really but that's not a bad idea either, I meant like clearance in the engine bay and working on the vehicle in general. Like with my current car, I have to remove a lot of things just to have room to access components or even headlights, so it needs a decent variety of tools.
I just don't want more stuff and it'd be nice to keep my tools together. But if all I needed was adjustable wrenches and screwdrivers it'd be a no brainer to get an old jeep.
>>
>>27633374
It's easier to "get to" a component just because by nature of design an old jeep is "open" but those components are still basically standardized Chrysler products- so a bleeder screw on a caliper is still tiny and buried in the wheel and leaf spring u-bolts are still buried in the axle perch.

Way more Toyotas are on the Rubicon than Jeeps outside of the Jamboree (in which they go out a few days before and stack rocks all over the place to make the trail as easy as possible). All earlier pre-Tacoma era pickups and 4Runners of course though, hardly see any IFS rigs on any trail around here (other than my Cybertruck). Lol at holding an offroad event in Texas though. not really, I live like 45 min from the rubicon in Reno

pre tacoma pickups and 4runners are IFS 99.9% of time time

>>
>>27634702
IDK man, XJs aren't cheap like they used to be, and yeah it's a little easier/cheaper to build a mildly capable XJ than Toyota Truck but not by much. For doing actually hard trails like Fordyce and whatnot I promise you the Toyota is the best budget option.

every single part of ownership is this way
also, this XJ was 1200 dollars with brand new 33s on it from Facebook marketplace like 3 years ago and the xj I got before this was 600 and the one before that was 2500 but it was clean
even things like 4 link kits and dual transfer cases, regear kits, carriers, axles etc all cost more for no apparent reason, I'm good on it

Do you think it's worth the extra $250 for the maxxis buckshot? They're so kino.

got the down pipe done tonight
>>
>>27635150
shit was so ridiculously tight to the starter and frame rail/firewall and bell housing that I had to cut my upper passenger side link off the frame and also smash the firewall in with a hammer to make it clear
>>
>>27635152
just barely cleared but now it's a home run to the back of the jeep
>>
>>27634610
show me more please.
>>
>>27634970
why is the hilux so crazy ugly.
it's a decent rig but I can't get over it.
>>
>>27635155
Luckily the engine isn't mounted on rubber isolators that flex or anything....
>>
>>27635283
they don't flex that much also I'm just gonna make some more clearance
my trash can is looking pretty epic with the last 2 days worth of empties in it, god I love this country
>>
>>27635298
also I made a tool from wire crimpers that restores the beaded edge on intercooler tubing after you cut it, works fucking amazing
pic rel made a clean ass bead after cutting that tube
>>
>scratch build
>has to modify the firewall because shit doesn't fit.
I stand by my "doesn't have experience or knowledge to plan a build from the beginning to end" comment.
And you should probably get off the meth.
>>
>>27635377
The jeep was designed to have exhaust run down the driver side, the passenger side has no room for the exhaust
Also I kept the stock trans crossmember mounting instead of moving it forward because I wanted to continue to use stock drive shafts, that way if I break one on a really far trip I can source one locally
The entire point of the build is reliability, easy repairability and efficiency
I’m going 3 link long arm anyway so the upper link isn’t needed and people on the VW diesel forums said firewall clearance will require hammering for XJs so I was expecting it
>>
>>27635384
I could have moved the trans crossmember forward 2 inches and the exhaust would have fit better but I refuse because I really wanna have stock drive shafts, I plan on driving to Alaska and all over Canada with this truck so I want parts to be as available as possible
Stock radiator, off the shelf prebent hoses, as many commonly available off the shelf components as possible so that if anything does break I won’t be fucked
>>
>>27635394
You could have rotated the turbo mounting flange so the exhaust wouldn't have hit shit at all but you're a fucking retard.
Gi ahead and make more excuses on why you failed at designing a scratch build.
>>
>>27635400
Rotated the turbo flange how?
>>
>>27635402
So the exhaust port wasn't pointing at the fucking firewall (?)
You literally mounted it with neutral/zero base x/y/z axes without any thought of how the next component would fit.
Your designs in general are very linear, like you're just snapping Legos together.
Your spacial relation skills suck.

>So the exhaust port wasn't pointing at the fucking firewall
That’s how literally every turbo is mounted
That’s why down pipes exist, that’s why they’re called downpipes
That’s exactly how my dodge Cummins and my Mercedes looked from the factory, and every other diesel mounted longitudinally
Have you never seen a turbo vehicle before?
>>
>>27635551
>You literally mounted it with neutral/zero base x/y/z axes
Turbos have to be mounted on axis with the crankshaft and the oil drain must be within 10 degrees of vertical according to Holset’s install guidelines, which apply to all turbos really
If the turbo is mounted outside those angles the oil won’t drain correctly and it will fail
>>
>>27635753
The engine has a natural 5 degree tilt backwards to promote proper oil distribution in the oil pan and driveline angles and the turbo must not lean on the axis of the crankshaft in longitudinal install more than 6 degrees per holset install guidelines
>>
>>27635753
>Turbos have to be mounted on axis with the crankshaft
They don’t have to be on axis but on 99% of all installs they are, they can be off axis but they must still follow guidelines for proper oil drainage which means mounting them aiming directly at the firewall 99% of the time which is why it looks like it does, for everyone not just me
>>
Now think REALLY HARD for a minute here and remember theres 3 fucking dimensions in this universe- explain to me why that 10 degree max angle means the turbo had to be mounted perpendicular to the firewall

>>27635782
It must be within 10 degrees on 2 separate axis, the oil drain MUST be within 10 degrees of vertical, you’ll notice every turbo is mounted this way
Here’s some more examples that are exactly the same as mine from just googling “diesel down pipe”
That’s why my Mercedes and Cummins both look exactly the same way

>>27635786
Turbo mounting guidelines are strict and must be followed which is why “downpipes” exist instead of just aiming the outlet of the turbo downwards
The pipe has to make a sharp bend to avoid the firewall and get under the truck
>>
>>27635786
>>27635796
Crazy how every down pipe in these pics looks almost identical to the one I made
>>27635150
Almost like they’re all following the same inherent rules that must be followed for a longitudinal mount diesel truck

That’s not a truck and that’s still following the same oil drain guidelines
Some turbos can go further like 15 degrees but holset specifically states 6 degrees of lean back on the axis of the crank when mounted longitudinal
The turbo is mounted there on that install because packaging doesn’t allow it anywhere else but there unless he wants it in the passenger seat or trunk
>>
>>27635824
That’s also similar to how I mounted my turbo in my turbo LS Volvo 240, but I put mine off to the side in the passenger fender where the battery used to go

You can not only rotate it but also move it forward/backwards and up/down.
But once again you have no actual knowledge or experience to guide you through a custom setup so you wind up with that trash.

There's a giant void between that engine and fenderwell with 100 different locations to mount that turbo but instead of accepting you made a mistake and redoing it you just continued on.
>>
>>27635849
Yeah you can rotate it, it’s called clocking the turbo, that’s literally the only adjustability you get to maintain the 10 degree vertical oil drain requirement
Everything else is determined by mounting

You keep posting V8s, show me some examples of longitudinal i4 and i6 and we will start to see some similarities
There’s no reason to mount the turbo away from the manifold in my case, that would be a ton of unnecessary piping that would heat my engine bay and cost money and complicate batter placement, air filter placement, cooling hose and intercooler placement etc
I’ve done a ton of swaps, including turbo LS swaps like you keep posting for some reason
How about you post some of your own swaps for us to see
>>
>>27635849
>There's a giant void between that engine and fenderwell
The AC compressor goes directly under the turbo and takes up the entire void there btw, it’s just not installed in the pics

Fun fact:
The guy who built the prototype for Mazda did so in his garage.
Once everything was dialed in and performance goals were met it was reverse engineered and all the jigs and fixtures were made after cutting up the car.

There was only 1 set.
I'd precut all chassis components and make bulkheads, rollbars, down tubes etc for a 30 car run then build the chassis.
Each chassis took about 12 hours.

I didn't say that was my pic.
I'm not the only one who ever made them but considering how many I did make there's about a 75% chance that any pic of a formula mazda is one of my cars.
You're just pissed that you've created nothing of value.
Meanwhile I can do a random internet search and find my work.
Stay mad, scrub.
