I'm having a very strange problem, I cannot actually twist my throttle fully open. There's about 150° of twist between the stops, so it's not really possible to open it fully without regripping in the middle of accelerating, not exactly an option on the track. Has anyone ever heard of or know of a twist grip that gets you some mechanical advantage? Like pulling the cables more per degree of twist?

Fellas, it is with great regret that I inform you about
>1982 Suzuki GS 650 G
Picked it up today, has almost everything, and I spot checked a few parts I knew were bad or trashed for pricing before buying.
Tachometer has a broken off needle but otherwise looks good, new headlight, front signals, and incorrect but good rear signals and tail light.

The bad: seat is trash, gas tank is perforated, missing 1 side cover, hasn't been started in years. Old guy was nice but has like 40 motorcycles outside in various states of disrepair and rust, all under $20 vinyl bike covers. Handlebars are present, but with electrical tape under the bar clamp, its clear they're aftermarket. Controls are uhhh, half there but will likely need replacement. Unknown if engine and transmission is good. In 1st gear we couldn't move the bike, it clicked to neutral and rolled freely. I'm told older shaft drive bikes are basically bomb-proof.

Might be a fun restoration project, I'm a little concerned about synching 4 carburetors and sourcing some of the harder to find oddities like 1 fucking side cover. I'm also not excited about stripping it down to bare frame to rattle can the frame and buff the chrome parts, but it'll be a longer project just for fun. Old dude was super excited for me telling me about how much they're worth restored and how little money I'll have to put in to get it there. Always strange hearing that then asking why they themselves aren't pursuing this profit machine.
>>
How is Klr650 as a first bike? I'm thinking about getting one, seem to be able to get a pretty good deal on them used.
>>
>>27780010
They're really fucking fat, like 100 lbs heavier than their competition. However it's easy to ride, absolutely bulletproof, cheap to buy, ride, and fix. So it's fine, just don't be surprised after a year when you want something that can comfortably do highway speeds.

A beautiful one for sure, but no. I Inherited this one from my dad. It was his baby since the 80s and I never rode it before he passed. It is super torquey from idle and just vibrates you to pieces when you rev it.

It is not a beginner bike by any stretch. Clutch is very stiff and has little feel to it. Finding neutral best works when still rolling, almost impossible when stationary. Very heavy for what is a small bike by todays standards.

On the plus-side: no plastic, everything is painted/chrome metal. Super nice feel to it. And, as I said, classically beautiful.

50 miles in on my KLX 300. Still beginner as fuck but everything is coming a lot smoother. Still wanna learn shit down the road like wheelies and how to actually do off road shit. Already had my first epic fuck the law dual sport moment of hopping over some grass to get into a parking lot rather than having to loop around. Pretty fucking rad I know.

When my dad passed and I picked up riding I unintentionally bought the same bike, but a bit more modern - the Yamaha XJ 600 N. A 4cyl bike mind you. The last generation of naked bikes without electroincs and somewhat calssical styling, before people started designing turn of the century slop. But it rides like modern bike in many ways.

It was a great beginner bike for me. Simple, reliable, cheap. Spare parts in Europe are ubiquitous. And you can still smoke cars at the red light.

Good bikes, not a moneymaker but quite sound and easy to deal with including carbs.

All you need to know lives here:
https://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/index.php

https://oldskoolsuzuki.info/forums/forum/7-air-cooled/

Best to fix everything and get it running nicely before fucking with cosmetics. Carbs are easy. Get a large baking sheet to catch hardware then pull the slides, float bowls, jets and emulsion tubes. Remove the idle mixture screws under the plugs (which you carefully drill for a small wood screw then use that to pull them with pliers). I use undiluted Pine-Sol to soak carbs, handy since you can either pour it back into the jug (I use a funnel and coffee strainer) or down the sink with no problems (it will degrease your drains too.)

Use a round shank hollow ground screwdriver for the mixture screws etc and grind the tip so it looks like )( from the side. Do a careful job and it will not smear brass screw heads and jets.

Download the factory service manual, no substitutes.

>It doesn't take much to pump and refine oil.
Its actually a complex exercise in logistics. It takes a lot of different specialized people to make it happen. You cant just turn off and on a refinery. It can take up to 5 years to build a new refinery. From cold start to full production it can take up to a year to bring the whole refinery online.
>>
>>27780361
They're fine. I've worked on many and owned a couple. Super simple to deal with. Parts are cheap and the community is large.

Same, I've been between getting Skorpion's knockoff bandit or a shoei/arai. I think if I went with the latter in white with some of these would kinda look like rabbit ears in a cute way but not overly showy like the cat ear ones ppl get.
Not looking promising tho, it seems like it's just one chinese maker doing the same plastic mold bullshit. Maybe 3D printing could be the move?
>>

>Good bikes, not a moneymaker
Yeah, even if I only break even after getting a bonded title and registering it I wouldn't be upset. I'm not doing this to supplement my income, mostly just getting my hands dirty and the overall experience of it.

>Download the factory service manual, no substitutes.
Got a site where I can for free? I wouldn't mind finding a Haynes manual again. I haven't checked those 2 links yet, sorry if they're there.

My initial plan was to get it down to nearly bare frame to get the surface rust knocked off and rattle canned black again. I think I need new exhaust since he straight piped it and its super rusty inside the straight pipes. Boomer did the usual "them pipes is worth $300 alone bubba, ask me how I know!" routine making me think if I parted it out I'd have $3000.

I just got it out of my van this afternoon and its going to be 100+ with decent humidity for many more weeks. I won't have a lot of time to work on it and my garage isn't airconditioned and is like 110 during the day, and like 90 at night.

I ran a Vance and Hines on my GS 750 with a Dynojet kit but you can do what we did on many bikes and drill the stock low speed jets to the next larger number drill bit size after the largest SHANK (never measure using drill flutes) that fits.

A #60 thru 80 bit set is under ten bucks. Clamp shank in pin vise or visegrip, rotate low speed jet between thumb and forefinger until bit breaks through, then stroke a few times without rotatin to debur. Inspect using BRIGHT light.

I've not downloaded a GS manual in many years (I bought the book for mine) but the Carl Salter site is safe and widely used over many years:

https://www.carlsalter.com/download.asp?p=2535

They're great rugged bikes.

Easy route with the frame is run a hunk of thick allthread through the steering neck using nuts and washers to seal the bearing cups (run fat beads of RTV to seal washers to bearing cups) which keeps grit out of the neck and doesn't leak even in a powder coat oven. Then visit your local monument shop. They all blast on the side since they have large engine drive compressors and industrial blast pots to cut and update grave markers.

That gets you a frosty white frame you can prime and paint to suit. Manual sanding isn't worth it. RTV is great for filling bolt holes etc before abrasive blasting. I've had many frames done including my FXR and my mentors 1939 Chief and (I forget the year) BSA Catalina Gold Star.

If you get a Shoei/Arai make sure it's one of the ECE rated ones. No sense in paying premium for a DOT sticker.
A couple of quick google searches (as both horns and fins) found me a couple of small online businesses making them, one of which apparently supplies a motocross fellow but still looks iffy to me.
3D printing should be a solid alternative, yes.

nta, but you are clearly experienced in carbs/tuning so I figured I'd ask.
I have a GS500, and I was looking at getting an exhaust system and aftermarket air filter.

Anyways, my question is how do you balance jetting size for peak engine efficiency/power?
Do you just "feel" out the lean/rich conditions by sound and acceleration? Or do you use electronic equipment like those A/F mixture devices that go on your tailpipe?
How did you learn your stuff? Got any good tips or guides?

Just a warning. I think customs can technically destroy none DOT helmets if they catch it at the checkpoint. But it will probably get through. Way back there was a case in NY where someone ran into some trouble for a fucking windscreen because it wasn't marked DOT.

Not post apocalyptic, totalitarian state. Anons bitch about "muh limited mobility" with electric yet fail to grasp even a single piece of the logistics and equipment necessary to produce gasoline

The logistics for electric engine/battery/generation are several degrees more fucked up, what's your point?

Let's say you already have a vehicle and maybe a spare set of tires and necessary maintenance items, not talking about producing new ones entirely. The only "fuel" an electric needs is some form of electricity generation, such as spinning the actual electrical part of a generator (could be done with wind, hydro, human power via cannibalized bicycle, you get the idea) or solar panels that you bought before your country/state went to shit because muh globohomo invaded with black helicopters. Any of those options listed are much more compact and simple than an entire fucking refinery setup or brewing ethanol. I really don't want to die on a hill arguing about this but I just want people to acknowledge that "muh gas engine is freedom" is a complete fucking lie and your bike turns into a lawn ornament very quickly without the expansive fuel distribution and production network the world currently has running.

They're mostly after emissions stuff these days. They don't even have enough people to check every web store package. If it gets through xray, WMD, bomb, and drug sniffing its going to get to you with how over worked they are.

I've been riding this little shit bike more than anything else lately. It's just so much fun and hard to get into trouble with. It's coming up on 16k miles. I should probably adjust the valves. I know on the 4cyl sport bikes, people often push the valve checks out to 20-25k especially if they're not beating on them all the time.
What are the little thumpers like in that regard? 2011 cbr250.

Do you think you're riding around for fun in this stupid make believe totalitarian globohomo society? Do you even understand the concept of hypothetical scenarios? You're only grasping little pieces of what I'm saying and trying to apply them to something else.

It did. It's a lot better. I increased the rear preload as well.
This was before I rebuilt the forks. I can't remember if it sat higher after the rebuild without the extra spacers, but I don't think it did (don't have a pic of that).

Do you guys leave your gear on your bike? I'm trying to commit to wearing my riding pants every ride but the hassle of bringing 5lb leather pants around with me everywhere is obnoxious. I wouldn't mind it if I could leave it on my bike but I feel like it would get stolen within a few months.
I know people get away with it with helmets since they're pretty personal and gross to buy secondhand but I see people buying secondhand leathers all the time
>>
>>27781186
Good to know man. I asked because I read somewhere that increasing the preload on the forks would make it sit higher. But I don't know if it meant actually increasing the height or make it sag less, therefore higher.
>>
>>27781199
1. Only in my neighbourhood/workplace car park/other safe environments. Immigrants are a blight.
2. Get riding jeans, ideally kevlar and with removable armour pads.
3. I've seen even the crustiest of helmets get stolen, unless you live in Japan/Korea/a 90% white area, just don't leave it hanging loose.

I leave my stuff on my bike but 99% of my riding is in rural northern New England. Back in the day when I used to ride in cities and travel all over I’d take my gear with me and lock my helmet, gloves, etc. in the top box if it seemed like a somewhat sketchy area.

actually realizing now, using a long bike lock and running it through the pantleg wouldn't be a terrible idea. Enough deterrent to get petty thieves to leave it alone but not enough hassle that it's not practical. I always park in front of whatever building I'm in so it might be work out
>>
>>27781242
I've seen cables meant to run through the sleeves of a jacket so you can lock it to your bike. Still wouldn't do it, but they're out there.

Not him, but just check the forums and copy what someone else already did. Someone has put every exhaust on every bike and posted what jets worked for them on a forum. Yes, it is easy to tell by feel how the mix is, if it's lean the revs will hang, if it's rich it will bog. You can double check if it's good by pulling out a spark plug and looking at it. Black means rich, white means lean, Golden or clean means good. Google pictures of this.
