2 big reasons 1) American regulations distinguish trucks from cars so mid-size and full-size SUVs can get to market with less regulatory overhead and inhibitions on what can be done 2) the market wants bigger because people feel safer and more comfortable in bigger vehicles The reason crossovers and compact SUVs are still selling is in spite of this. What are currently crossover options would’ve just been sedans in the past. And the only reason coupes are hanging on is the luxury/performance market. For passenger vehicles, everyone wants an SUV. It’s fair honestly. I mean, they are the single most useful and comfortable vehicle you can buy.
