Black pill me on four wheel drive.
>>
>increases complexity
>increases weight
>decreases fuel efficiency
>increases longitudinal but not lateral grip
>you won't need it unless you climb or tow on slippery surfaces

nothing personnel kid

If the driveshaft fails on a 2wd, you're stranded.

If a driveshaft fails on a 4wd, the other one will get you home.

Most available awd systems are shitty and over complicated requiring things like all the tires being exactly the same or it fucks ya. Better to have a 4wd system and only use it when needed
>>
>>28114336
They put it in a fucking compass
As an aside, a used compass 6mt with 4wd would make a great rallycross beater
>>
4 wheel drive =/= all wheel drive
The terms are not interchangeable
That's why they're different terms.
>>

It's four wheels, that drive.

I assume "blackpill" means you want the cynical bullshit?
Ok. 4WD systems often rely on crazy 90-deg turns and unequal axles to transmit power and unless it's a real off-roader the 4WD components are usually a shitty afterthought of components that can fail after like 100 miles of use.
>>
>>28114529
That's AWD. 4x4's are RWD based and use a longitudinal drivetrain and a transfer case. Not just a shitty AWD takeoff bolted onto the FWD tranny.
>>
>>28114336
not necessary unless you don't have roads.

Less intuitive than FWD and RWD when it comes to choosing the right action once you lose traction. Simple 4WD that you can engage manually seems nice, but not the AWD voodoo with electronics.
>>
Really hard to black pill you on 4x4. I myself would never own a truck without it. I guess you can argue it more complicated but its better than getting stuck on wet grass.

luv me rwd
luv me 4x4
luv me offroadin n muddin
>>

No, the compass/latitude is actually 4wd
Most awf crossovers have a shitty front bias system but the compass/latitude locks, even has a low range box
Completely pointless of course due to the camry-level ground clearance but it's there
>>
>>28117785
4wd is a marketing term. You have AWD or you have 4x4. There's nothing in-between. "4wd" is just a sticker that makes you think your shitty AWD crossover is off-road worthy.
>>
>>28118434
I mean, its ACTUALLY 4x4
It's actual fucking 4 wheel drive with a locking transfer case and a rangebox
Again, completely pointless, no ground clearance, no torque
But it's interesting, and will be fun to hoon around in the dirt when values crater, especially the 6mt

>rusty piece of shit fails
>therefore the design is bad
More at 10

It's useless deadweigth in summer. You have to wait until winter and hope for good snowfall to settle in to do dank skids in some empty parking lot because roads are too crowded with fwd normies to get any use and fun out of your awd.
