Why can't the European car industry come up with a 21st century Version of xars like Renault 4, Citroen 2CV, or Volkswagen Käfer? Simple, no nonsense affordable cars like these are what made them great. Yet nowadays even the cheapest shitboxes have useless crap like media Centers, programmable arse warmers etc that drive up prices and basic models just exist on paper. They keep chasing Dome car dogma about a 35k+ minimum vehiclebthat's chockfull of useless crap that you should ideally buy on subscription and wonder why they keep getting BTFO. How hard do they have to fail before realizing their mistake?

The Citroen 2CV isn't a shitbox, its a insane piece of suspension engineering, where the core problem is that the French is unable to envision long term support and hardware revisions.
The Beetle isn't just a shitbox, its a shitbox intended to have good fuel mileage on the autobahn.
Likewise the 4CV from Renault isn't a car, its more of a showcase of importing various WW2 production advances to French manufacture.

VAG 1,6TDI existed until we got the gay ass Euro 6 standard and you got particle filter + adblue. You can still buy unrusted pre 2014 vehicles.
A lot of the brands are now Stellantis. Also the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance means all of them is partially getting cucked by the worse tendencies of their counterparts.

It needs to fulfill so many occupant and pedestrian crash safety norms and have such an elongated list of equipment (airbags, ABS, ESP, backup camera, emergency call system, traffic sign recognition, auto-braking etc.) that by the time it's barely road-legal it's already expensive and complicated.
Now of course it could be left bare-naked like that, but using the necessary hardware it doesn't cost much to add some creature comforts (i.e. make the screen you can't avoid double as infotainment system). Many customers will demand basic comfort systems, so the manufacturer has to offer them.
Now, for a cheaper version to be worth it, a substential quantitiy would have to be built. If you spend an extra 10k on tooling to make a more basic version (10k is NOTHING in tooling!) you need to sell a lot of cars like that to make it worth it. If that saves you 20€ for some feature you don't have to put in and you can make the car 15€ cheaper because of it, will enough people take this option? Probably not.

Again, you need to have the really expensive parts whether you like it or not. Add 200€ worth of equipment and you can make the best out of those cameras, screens etc. that you cannot avoid. Developing and producing a bare-naked version is going to incur a lot of initial cost that's doubtful to ever pay off.
Since the car's going to be painfully expensive anyways, might as well make it worth it where little extra efford is needed.

Meanwhile Tesla is making the big bux by offering Shitbox and Shitbox+ as their only varieties of the same car.
2WD gets a more basic stereo.
4WD gets the premium package.
And picking Sport/Performance generally gets you a worse car that is identical to the other 4WD option.

OEM feature level is also often a meme, because the stock version might not be drivable north of Italy/Texas/Okinawa due winter and too small heaters.
Or there would be no point in picking a exploding auto tranny for the cheapest vehicle.

Nothing is stopping you from buying a subpar NCAP rated car anon. You can literally go to the Nissan dealership and sign up for a manual Verso almost without aids.

I live in a region where you won't actually see bottom tier equip list cars. Why? Because tunnels means AC recirculation is mandatory, winter means the cheapest radiator setup is a death trap
Manufacturers make a lot of money by trying to sell it at a sticker price that isn't possible, and then having people buy whatever roll off the factory line once they get to their local importer.
