Morel editionFound about a half pound over Easter weekend, upstate SC.
here's a better photo
>>2714658It is still cold and snowing here in central WI, probably no morels for another two weeks at the earliest, if I had to guess. What are the nighttime temperatures like where you found them?
It has been raining a ton here, way more than last year. As soon as those soil temps start getting up there, it's go time. But there's snow slated for later this week...
>>2714658>>2714730I've seen them popping up at lower elevations very early this year, here in far north California. 55F 5 day average soil temp here in the valley. But still low 40s up at 2800ft where I forage. I'm expecting to see them any time now, unless we get a last late season snow next weekend.
how's the mushroom hunt? already itching to go but still some snow and cold here in finland

>>2717281keep looking bro, good luck
>>2716778remember to always specify between morels and false morels in these threads arvon suomi nyymisenifor some reason people outside northern europe are deathly afraid of korvasieni and think its not something to be ingested in any way ever and it will kill you instantly even if we think it as a delicacyits the same old song every spring
>>2717286They're already differentiated one is a Morechella and one is a Helvellaceae. You don't need to specify unless you're looking for gyromitra and not morels. And the reason most of the world avoids gyromitra is because it kills a number of people every year. It has a higher chance of killing you than puffer fish. Can you eat both, yes. Are they both considered delicacies, yes. Can they both kill you if not properly handled, yes. But which must be handled by a licensed chef? The puffer fish. Eat them if you like, there are plenty of safer options out there and I'm not starving.
>>2717286Gonna try to find morels first, but going switch to korvasieni later

What types of mushrooms grow in shady lawn? These fuckers pop up the next day after watering the lawn.
>>2714658what mushrooms are these?i'm in north western tennessee 1/3

>>2714886I live in Johnson County. Do you have any tips to share? I had gone out a couple times last year specifically for morels but had no luck.
>>2718485Can't speak with certainty for americlapland, but here atleast, morels are one of the trickiest, just common field mushrooms are nice, boletes are plenty but often have maggots and other nasties
>>2714658look what i found
>>2718299need better picture, up close, underneath, and of stem.
>>2718485I am in Linn county. Last year I found a couple at Pinicon Ridge park on the hill between the fire tower and river, but the rest of my hunts happened in Wisconsin. This year will be all Iowa hunts; I plan to look around the Coralville reservoir and other secluded spots around the Wapsipinicon. I look for areas around the trees they like, especially areas without a bunch of tall grasses, black walnut shells, invasive species, or pine duff. Moss on the ground is always a good sign. If these temps keep up, next weekend is probably the start of the season. Next weekend is Bicycle Day and 4/20 though so I might be busy. There's a Morel Festival in Muscoda, WI, that is really underwhelming but if you get there early you can buy fresh morels by the bucket. There's the Houby Days festival in Cedar Rapids that I've never been to but will go this year that is focused on morels and mushrooms from a Czech perspective.
>>2718299Vaguely squareish caps point to Agaricus or Leucoagaricus but you need more/better pictures.
>>2718583>>2718609That better? I could try and pluck one without breaking it later when the sun is out.

How much does mushrooming differ between continents? I live in Australia
>>2718762Same. I'm not an expert but the high tide for mushies starts right when the weather bends from summer to autumn, which in NSW just happened this week. I've heard it's especially good this year because of all the rain we just had. I normally spend my Fridays doing laundry, cleaning the garden, and doing my weekend cooking projects but this weekend I've heard is GOLDEN for mushrooms. So, I've cancelled all my errands and chores and tomorrow I'm going out to photograph mushrooms. I learned my lesson the last couple years by waiting too long and then I find nothing. Also, this >>2718032
>>2718763Cool I'm also NSW, are the seasons that important for mushrooming? Maybe it fully dies around mid-winter?
>>2718764Mushroom season in NSW is early autumn-early winter. This isn't ALL mushroom, because of course even in summer my garden pots sprout random little brown random mushrooms, but the best mushrooms happen from now till about July.>what are the best mushrooms for the next 2 monthsAll the delishes edible ones, all the toxic beautiful ones, all the magic ones
>>2718766Cool thanks, have you got any guides you could recommend?
>>2718769I don't actually. I'm no expert but I send all my photos to my friend and he advises me on what it is. Just don't eat anything pls, I certainly don't.

Anyone know of getting sick/allergic reaction to morels?I live in the pnw and use wood chips for landscaping and get a ton of morels each season. It’s never been a problem until this year.week ago I had steak and sauteed morels with bell peppers and onions, 3 or 4 hours later, violently ill. (I’m 100% sure they were morels, and fully cooked). Chalked it up to the steak or the grill making me ill. Then this morning I made an omelette with sautéed morels.. now 3 or 4 hours later, same thing. (Flushed, nausea, and vomiting)This is a curse/
>>2719007I saw an article about it recently, the conclusion the article came to is that some people can develop morel allergiesDon't know how legit that is
>>2719007Did you wash them well? They have a lot of spaces for nastiness to collect.
>>2719011>>2719012Yeah it’s weird.. and yeah, washed them and then cut down the middle to check the insides for .. stuff.Feeling better now after a few hours; but man wtf. Last few years of enjoying morels from my own property every spring might be all I get. I could understand if it was from an old orchard, or downstream from a factory or something— but this was just timberland since forever.
>>2719007>>2719034do / did you use woodchips from a factory of some kind at some point?could the mushrooms have absorbed any chemicals? (i could see if you did previously, without any problems, the chemicals could have broken down &/or leeched into the pile over time too)besides that, like >>2719011 said, mushroom are a thing where people can eat them for years, then one day become allergic, wild mushrooms especially if you're willing, i'd say maybe carefully give it one more try a while later, then see if it comes back, if so, immediately stop you might wanna get a blood test in case it damaged any organs, if there was damage, you probably still have some dead cells floating around in your blood right now
>>2719001afraid I know nothing about antipodean mushrooms
>>2719101Nope, the woodchips were from lumber felled and processed on site.I think it’s an allergy, I got this very slight “sandpaper” feel in my throat about 20m after eating them the last time (about 2 hours before onset of symptoms)I’ll take a pass on eating any more this season and try a small portion next year.Shame to waste them though. Come on over and help yourself I guess.
>>2719205try having someone else eat some and see if they get sick
>>2719161It's okay either did she >>2718032
>>2718995My best guess would be they're psathyrella. Not sure the variety though.
>>2718610Check the very bottom of the stem for an egg like sack. A. Ocreata possibly.
>>2719334If no sack, compare to White dapperling. But I am also unfamiliar with Austrailian mushrooms.
No luck finding morels, unfortunatly. I did find a couple Gyromitra esculenta. I don't personally eat gyromitra. I know you can if it's processed and cooked properly, but I choose not to.

WA fag here.Wednesday temps are supposed to be around 56° F after two days of rain so I'm gonna try my hand at my usual spot to see if anything is growing.Usually find a large amount of oysters but hopefully I can get my hands on other varieties.
Does anyone know if new morels can fructify in the same spot multiple times in one season? ive found my first morel spots recently but all of them were basically starting to rot/mold
>>2720513They can flush out more than once, it depends on the variety and the conditions. If not, you'll know where to look next year.
The ground frosted over last night and my mushroom hunting spot is about 45 mins away.Should I go check out if there are any shrooms growing or would it be a waste of time? Current temp at hunting spot is about 59° F.
>>2721205Air temp or ground temp? You should be looking at soil temperature not air temperature if you're looking for morels. They grow at 45-55F and will stop once the soil temperature reaches 60F.
>>2718522Wow! You are the first person ever to post a pic on 4chan of a psilocybe home grow in a /mush/ thread.... heres your (you)
>>2721401Air temp. Apparently the soil temp in that area is 61° F.While I missed the window for morels, did I also miss oysters?Went to my usual spot today and saw literally 0 mushrooms which is the opposite of my usual forays.
>>2721430Oysters will fruit after it rains. They like warmer temperatures. 65-75F air temp is what oysters like. It's been a very mild winter here in norcal and it's shaping up to be a warm spring too. Morels have already been out, a month early. You probably didn't miss it if it's still frosting over at night. But I don't know where you are. Don't necessarily go by the day to day, look at the weekly average. Unless it's been over 60F for a week or two they should still be coming.
>>2721432Interesting. Thank you anon. I'll try for oysters or morels on Sunday. Are morels less affected by precipitation compared to oysters?
>>2721435All mushrooms love a good rain. Most are ~90% water.
>>2721435>>2721442I like to go out a day or two after it's rained. Sometimes if it's been raining for an extended period, I'll go out in the rain. Different mushrooms prefer different conditions...as long as it's moist.
>>2721442>>2721443Trying to predict exactly when and where mushrooms will sprout after a rain is a fool's task, the local microclimate has a huge effect on fruitingYou have to go to a spot multiple times and get trends if you want to predict that sort of thingBut yes, in general, mushrooms fruit after it rains
i saw this mushroom in the pot of my cayenne pepper plant i keep in my bathroom (i put the pepper plant inside for the winter, now it lives there under a growlight)the mushroom only existed for an hour or two, never seen a mushroom in the pot before, any idea what it is?

I’ve never found a morel but I’d love to find one this year. Can I find them in places similar to where I find my ramps earlier in the year, under cover near fallen trees?
>>2714658dnt someone just die from not cooking them well enough?
>>2725696Several people were recently made sick at a restaurant. I don't remember if anyone actually died. The were said to have been fully cooked. It's unknown why they made everyone sick. They were farmed Morels from China. It's unclear if that's a factor as well. Lots of unknowns. That was back about a month ago, I haven't looked to see if there were any updates. I want to say it was in Washington or Oregon.
Psilocybe subaeruginosa. Biggest specimen I've ever found.

>>2726459Pretty!
>>2726467Have a big one.
>>2726459This is Amanita flavoconia>>2726471This is Amanita chrysoblema yellow-orange variant, and I hate that name
>>2726436I think they're cool as well. I mean they just 'look' incredibly toxic. Everything about them speaks to my primal sense of "DANGER STAY AWAY."Anyway I've tried smoking them, making a tea out of them and eating them raw. The effects aren't pleasant and the potential toxicity concerns me. Also they seem to be full of little worms as well unless you pick them before they open (when they're like little golf balls).
>>2726459That's A. flavaconia, do not consumeHere's A. muscaria var. guesowii / A. chrysoblema, which can be used the same way as typical red A. muscaria. also keep an eye out for A. persicina which may appear similar to either version of A. muscaria. note the coloration, shape, and spacing of warts, stipe shape and textures. if you've got a single doubt about Amanitas don't consume it

First time growing shrooms. Bought the mycotown growtub thinking that was the simplest way, but turns out in the instructions it says I need perlite and vermiculite and a seperate bigger grow bag. Do I qctually need all this shit or is there another way? Everyone seems to make mushroom growing so complicated but I've seen some people on youtube just grow stuff straight from their first bag with out all the faff of moving things to seperate tubs and butting airholes in and shit.Just to be clear, I have psylocibin spores in the same household as this growing kit so advice on the requirements to grow cubes, so that I can advoid that and thus avoid breaking the law, would be helpful.
>>2730417You have several options. You don't need pearlite, you can achieve the same micro climate with just water and something to keep the cake above the water level. Vermiculite can be helpful when fruiting cakes. Once the cake is fully colonized, you can either open fruit it or top fruit it. To open fruit, remove the fully colonized cake from the tub, soak it overnight in a ziplock filled with water, next day drain the water and roll the cake in vermiculite. To top fruit, do all of the same, but instead of rolling the cake, place it back in the tub and add a layer of vermiculite to the surface. For creating a fruiting chamber, you can use a larger tub filled with about an inch of water. Place a couple jars upside down and place the cake on the jars, resting it about half an inch above the water surface(add more water if necessary) Place the lid on the larger tub, upside down with a slight twist to create air gaps for fresh air exchange.Another alternative is to place the fruiting block into a turkey bag with holes punched every inch or so, starting about half way up. I use the needle that comes with the spore syringe. You'll need to mist every day to keep humidity up. Mist the edges of the bag, not the fruiting block. To close the top between misting, fold it over and use a paper clip. it's not meant to be air tight, just keep most of the moisture in.
>>2730417You can fruit mushrooms in a bag, i think people typically put hydrated coco coir and/or vermiculite on top of the grain spawn once it's colonised. That would be a waste of spawn because you get much better results mixing the spawn with hydrated coco coir and fruiting in a tub. If you've gotten to the point where you have fully colonised grainspawn you've done all the hard stuff... preparing coir and mixing in a plastic tub is easy and all you need to do is flip the lid upside down on top and let it go if you get your water levels right. Also, unless you have liquid culture syringes you should probably germinate the spores on agar dishes to separate the mycelium culture from all the other contaminants that are probably present. Liquid culture syringes are a little safer to inject directly into grain because the mycelium is already alive and will colonise fast. Look up the hitchhiker's guide to the shroomery, you may have some success with all in one kits by luck but you may also get some nasty bacteria in every single one. DIY can be done on the cheap and you don't need all the fancy tech to do it.
>>2730417I bought one of those and followed the simple instructions. Filled it with water to hydrate it, poured off the excess, put it in the fridge for 12 hours, and then placed it inside the included plastic bag -- sealed up. From there, ideally you should put it on a warm pad intended for plants (or perhaps it's warmer where you are) and let it sit in undirect light. Once a day, open it up to mist it slightly and then re-seal paying attention to hygiene to avoid mould forming. Then, 2 weeks later you've got your first flush of mushrooms as simple as that, I still remember it all 10 years later it's so simple. You can usually do 2-4 runs with the same cake if you keep it clean of mold, with much reduced yields at the end.
>>2730417I got a grow bag from walmart and crumbled it up and put it into a bucket with holes filled with hardwood woodchip pellets for a wood stove and then got it wet and put it outside, still waiting on whether or not this was successful.
Hello /mush/, I found a cool mush in front of my home a few days ago and it looked very cool. I don't know what type of mushroom it is. I went outside a few hours later to take more photos of it, but it had already started raining by then and the mushroomboy started looking bad.

I found a group of Wrinkled Peach today, very unusual caps. I felt lucky to find it and take it for a spore print until I slipped with it in my hand and landed on my walking stick, snapping it in half. RIP stick.
>>2732134Perlite is for tub-in-tub systems, where a big tub is filled with a floor of perlite that is saturated with water and then the small tub with your bulk substrate is placed on top. Keeps the humidity up without a fogger and nothing grows on perlite so it stays clean.
