Saw this on FB. Seems to be sincere. Which one of you is it?

>>2718291The gear tells me this person has probably not hiked a lot and might also be obese. Might reach Neils Gap within seven days unless he runs out of food. Unless he has a heart attach on the approach trail
What the fuck is he gonna eat? There's no food.
>>2718310Theres six mountain house meals on the night stand, they should last him a day or two
I don't think he'll make it 8 miles up the approach trail to Springer Mountain with that weird mix of gear.
>>2718143He thinks the cutie pie female hikers will want to camp with him because he can use his sword to protect them. He will be maced by the first girl he talks to.
OP here. I did some searching and can’t find the post. It was an advertisement in FB for a group I wasn’t a part of but the algorithm thought I would be interested in.>>2718284It isn’t fake. >>2718436How do I get /out/ ads on Facebook? My feed is full of 90' nostalgia memes for cartoons I didn't watch, "gaming" shit, even though I haven't played a videogame in years and Chinese woodworking lifehack videos.
>>2718310>>2718315Don’t you see the rod and reel? Obviously he’ll mostly eat fish he catches and the mountain house is just for emergencies. He’ll probably be able to snare rabbits and forage for mushrooms too. The woods are full of food!
>>2718099Not a through hiker, so I might look like a fool, but why is he taking a solar panel and and jackery? Isn’t the point of through hiking to get away from all that?
>>2718632The Facebook algorithm is based on content you’ve interacted with. Joint local outdoor Facebook groups (which you should be a part of anyway) and follow the various pages. Bro can't even baton with the sword, and the biggest threat you'll face on the AT is black bears.
>>2720542What's the issue with the propane stove?>t. retard
>>2720548Propane stoves are niche tools for more specific circumstances. Say you're hiking in a region with now wood, or if you're train hopping and can't afford to have any smoke while you cook your food. Propane stoves excel here. However, if you're in the Appalachian mountains, odds are neither of those circumstances apply. Now you have to lug around extra weight (that remains as bulky weight even when the fuel runs out) despite having plenty of wood and no worries regarding fires. The only argument you can make for bringing the stove is if you find yourself in one of those week long rain storms, but this is the modern day where we have butane lighters and weatherproof matches. Any man should be able to start a fire in the rain and wind in a few minutes.Pros>Fire on demand>No smokeCons>Bulky>Weighs several pounds, and you have to carry it even when you're out of fuelPersonally, I recommend something like pic related for a forest hike. It weighs less than a pound, takes up as much space as a single sock when folded, and basically has the same advantages as the propane stove. Cheaper too. I can cook a can of soup on this with a single branch since it burns small twigs, and directs all the heat upwards. Hell, if you're a lazy bastard like me, and you find yourself in a freak week long rain storm, you can still get a rip roaring fire going with this foldable stove, and a few squirts of a pocket sized lighter fluid can.Tl;Dr: propane stoves are only good when you literally can't have a fire in any other manner.
>>2718099wholesome dd214 retardation.
>>2720567Alright, makes sense. Wasn't sure I could even make it out in OP's pic.I have one of those primus setups that works pretty well, basically just a small attachment on top of the gas cylinder. Mostly used it when hiking where the elevation doesn't allow for a lot of tree growth, though.
I was taught never to enjoy the humiliation and pain of others. This hiker is an exception. Please provide updates. I intend to bathe in his/her/xir misery and physical destruction. Yeassss!
>>2720533It’s a direct translation of the Bible. I’m not sure which religion uses that version.
>>2720594Anon, this guy >>2720567 is a fucking tard. You wouldn’t want to use a twig stove on a thruhike. They can be fun but you’re not going to want to have to baby a tiny fire and keep feeding twigs into it just to boil water. Your Primus stove is most likely the more ubiquitous isobutane stove, aka a canister stove. These don’t use propane, but a fuel mixture of propane and butane that comes in much smaller canisters. These are the most common stoves on the AT, followed by alcohol stoves.
>>2720599Not sure if you saw my other post in this thread here here: >>2720521So he dropped 35lbs from his pack, from 78 down to 45 (including food and water). This isn’t uncommon at all, and he did it very quickly. His latest IG post was tagged in Neels Gap, GA, roughly 32 miles from the southern terminus (you can check mile at atdist.com). So he’s already hiked further than 99% of /out/ and proven he’s more capable of change than at least half of the retards here. He’s worth following so far. Lots of positivity, lots of short videos. Definitely not a typical thruhiker. Let’s recap:>totally inexperienced with thruhiking>brings way to much shit>adapts quickly and ditches a lot>isn’t a pretentious hippy fag>wears a fun felted wool hat or something I dunno lol
>>2718099Lol thats so much money. I get so paranoid when my clothes aren't filled with holes.
>>2720624Im so scared that I'm too attractive. I don't deserve to feel.
He’s doing 5,3 miles a day. Other thru hikers cover that distance before breakfast. Noticed that he thanked his god for shaving off weight, but I bet thats also who told him to pack all that junk to begin with. The guy obviously have mental problems and I’m sure he will snap at some point. Lets just hope he has sent his sword home before that happends
>>2720567Almost everyone on every through hike uses a gas stove because building a fire every single fucking day after hiking 20-30 miles is tedious as fuck, you just want to boil some water to soak some food and crawl into bed. Not fuck around rummaging through dirt and insects to try and find some half dry twigs while its pissing down with rain and roaring wind. Stick to your bushcraft larp threads.
>>2718635Dear god I hope this comment is tongue in cheek.
>>2720619A "typical" thru hiker learns from others who have gone before him. This yokel didn't bother. But he sure did publicize himself. The sword and multiple knives?! With The Scriptures? Dude is an imbecile, I'll be charitable by not referring to him asan idiot but he's no mere moron.
>>2720712ThisAltra, Topo, Mellys, R1s, The One, HMG packs and Smartwater bottles might be memes, but they are memes for a reason. They all work much much much better than leather boots, bivys and polish milspec larp-packs if youre gonna hike over 9000 miles
>>2720611You don't have to baby it. I start the fire, put my pot on top, and maybe feed a few twigs over five minutes. My water boils fast, or my soup cooks quick. Usually done in just a couple minutes.>>2720676>Dirt and insects Nigga it's the woods. Jesus, I though I was a lazy bastard. Gathering firewood for a proper fire takes no real time, and I literally need one branch to cook dinner with my twig stove.I've been doing it every day for over a month this year, and I did it for three months straight last year. It isn't that hard. In fact, the routine is relaxing. Also>Bushcraft larpHow much of a fucking pampered faggot do you have to be to consider starting a fire larp? On the outdoors board? What the hell?
>>2720767>you don’t have to baby itCompared to every other stove type, yeah, you do. You don’t just light it and walk off. You constantly feed twigs, making sure it doesn’t go out. It can be fun, but it’s not practical. That’s why no one uses them for thruhikes. I didn’t see a single one on any of my AT hikes. You’re an idiot for suggesting it. They’re also messy as shit, but you already knew that.
>>2720771Skill issue
>>2720611>you’re not going to want to have to baby a tiny firethat's exactly what I want to do stfu. if we min max everything in life we wouldn't even be hiking in the first place
>>2720771>MessyYou mean the four square inches of ash? Who the hell cares? In fact, I use that to my advantage. When I'm done cooking dinner, I dump out the small coals and still burning twigs next to a small log, and build my actual campfire in that if I'm having one that night. If not, I just stomp on them.I have never had an issue with mine.
>>2720782>You mean the four square inches of ash?No, I’m talking about the thick layer of black soot that builds up on a pot used over an open fire. what’s your argument again? “Everyone is wrong except me”? Why is no one using these stoves on thruhikes?
Is that a fucking Gladius
>>2720789I'm using the stove on a thru hike literally as we speak, and I know people who do the same thing, so your appeal to popularity is just wrong, and possibly made up entirely. Unless of course you genuinely believe "I've never seen it in person therefore it isn't true". For the soot, wtf are you talking about about? The pot or pan will get a thin black layer that doesn't affect anything, and wipes off easily. That's after weeks of use, mind you. My pan still hasn't developed it after a month on the road.So here's me cooking lunch, in wind and rain near a river somewhere in rural Iowa. It took eleven minutes to set up, start, and cook, and that's without me cheating with lighter fluid like I usually do when it's wet out.https://youtu.be/Of0pwwdA_7s?si=WaOgljaOe_C0ZZGk
>>2720519>delusional christcucksurprise surprise
>>2720774you've never thru-hiked and it shows
>>2720820not that anon but it took you 11 minutes from the point you finally sat down after collecting wood so add at least 5 mins on. A mini butane/propane stove is smaller, lighter and you can start cooking after literally 30 seconds. The only reason to use that stove is for the primitive larp enjoyment aspect which I understand but on a multi-month thru hike that quickly wears off and you favor practicality
>>2720820>I’m on a thruhikeNo you aren’t.

>>2720842I grabbed those sticks off the ground where I set up my tent, so it took all of several seconds of sweeping my arm. A butane stove is not lighter when you factor fuel. >>2720869Yes, canned food because I'm by a town, and the pan weighs about a pound.
>>2720897>A butane stove is not lighter when you factor fuel.My mini butane stove plus two small canisters of gas will last me 2 weeks and is way later than your big ass larp stove, and miles more practical. Just accept it, your stove is fun for larping but it's not a good choice for genuine thru-hiking, not even accounting for the times where its heavy rain and wind, everythings wet, or there's isn't any firewood around
>>2720914one small gas canister is 200 gr. The twig stove OP posted is 300gr if it's the titanium version
>>2720920this model is 150 gr. So even if you also take some solid fuel tablets to get it going quicker in wet weather it's still going to be lighter than a gas canister

>>2720948Maybe I should’ve elaborated further. The NRSV uses the oldest known manuscripts as its source material and is as literal as possible in its translation. The KJV falls short of it in both regards.

>>27211142,190 miles / 5 miles a day = 438 daysWhere does that put him in winter?
>>2721114he'll be on the AT for 1.5 years with that pace. Also he has no winter gear on him
>>2721143>>2721144Because as we all know, there's nowhere to buy any winter gear whatsoever near the AT or PCT; you have to use only what you started with
>>2720567How's the Appalachian mountains during winter? Is it covered in snow? Got a lil Nova I go camping with in Norway during the cold seasons, cause I don't like bringing back empty gas canisters and the waste it creates
>>2721158Anon, a 6 month hike in fair weather is pretty long. A year and a half, including a winter somewhere in New England, isn’t exactly practical. Most people plan on a typical schedule, finishing before October. >>2721182Parts of it are very snowy in winter. Clingmans Dome (high point in the southern Appalachians, inside Great Smoky Mountain NP) probably still has snow on the ground.
>>2721158This. My cousin tried the AT but he only brought a week's worth of water with him. He died from dehydration
>>2721182I've never been out that way during the winter, but I imagine it can be pretty heavily snowed on. The few times I've been out that way, it was a pretty wet climate, and even in the dead of summer the nights can get into the low forties in some places. Hell, last year I walked through the mountains going west on a trip from Williamsburg Virginia to Chicago, and I crossed this one spot called Cheat Mountain. Idk if the AT runs through there, but it's a part of the range. It was in the upper eighties during the lay, and the night got down to 35F. That shit was crazy. They had a plaque near its peak talking about how they built a road through the area to run mail way back in ye olden days, and the mail was always late because of how deep the snow got. If I remember the quote right, when the local postal service was asked why letters took so long to go through, they replied with "Dear sir, if you tore open the side of hell, and backed it up to the mountain in winter, hell would freeze before the mountains thawed."Pretty funny.
Cracks me up how there is only one trail on the East Coast.
>>2721195FAKE AND GAY
>>2721182Most are snowy, but not impassible. Some like Mt. Washington get jet stream in winter and have the most severe temperatures in the country, despite being a relatively low elevation. -45 with sustained hurricane force wind.

>>2718702this post made me laffpretty accurate.this is not a serious load for the ATthe power bank alone had me rollin. I hope someone really did do this though. It will make me happy to know they suffered.

>>2721480>if anyone does a thing I don't like it means they haven't done another thingIt's all so tiresome
>>2721482you did it! you summarized all the boards!
>>2721480I genuinely don't understand this attitude. Are you people genuinely so tired at the end of the day that ten minutes of fire building is too much work? Another anon literally called having a fire 'larp'. What sort of sanitized faggotry do you people engage in that burning wood on a camping trip is some sort of archaic and amateur act? Do you pass people on the trail hiking with a walking stick and say 'heh, he's not gonna make it"?I literally demonstrated using the stove in windy wet conditions. It's not that fucking hard. Do you people genuinely get to camp, cook dinner, and just go to bed?
>>2721469>Reddit badGo back to /pol/, retard.>ur newNo, I’ve been here long enough to know that people genuinely think hunting and foraging might be viable options on an Appalachian Trail thruhike.
>>2721655>Do you people genuinely get to camp, cook dinner, and just go to bed?Bro that’s pretty much every night on a thruhike (or any long hike really).
>>2721665Your idea of hiking sounds incredibly gay. I've been that tired a few times, but normally I'm able to walk around the area a bit, do some stretches, climb a tree, explore some ruin that's nearby, ect. I can't imagine just walking all day, then sleeping, and repeating that for months. Sounds depressing.
>>2721665I guess it depends how you hike. I start really early in the morning, clear 20-25 miles and end my day around 3-5. Plenty of time to chill out, listen to music, washup, tend to my feet, take a nap, setup camp, etc. A lot of people I've hiked with in the past start late in the morning like 11, have to hike through the hottest parts of the day and don't eat right/chug their water until they're sick instead of sipping it and wonder why they make it to camp at 7-9pm feeling exhausted and groggy.
>>2721681Nah, don’t believe you. Sorry.¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>2721655The first night on a through hike where you have spent all day walking in pouring rain and freezing wind, are soaked to the bone, just want something hot to eat and get into bed, you will throw away that stupid larp gear. There is a reason 90% of people doing these hikes carry gas stoves and the rest carry liquid fuel stoves. Not to mention a lot of places, especially on the PCT have fire bans and you will get assrammed by a ranger if you get caught with your larp gear.
>>2721819>I fold as soon as I encounter any adversitySounds like a you problem
>>2721827By "fold" you mean decide to use appropriate equipment rather than shitty larp gear? Yeah I guess. Run along back to your bushcraft thread.
>>2721828>I decide what gear is appropriate for everyone else to use based on my own opinionsI'm sure everyone will rush to change their packing lists around just for you from now on

>>2721828Meh, I'm gonna try one of these stupid stoves just for fun. I camp in country where's there's plenty of twigs so why not. It'll be a fair weather thing though mind you.

>>2721839Am I deciding my packing options based on what everyone else does or is everyone else packing based on what I pack? Make up your mind larper.

>>2721863Guess again salty
>>2721863im not the >mystery meat mutt, but i just read the thread, is it really that bad to use a twig stove? its cheaper and produces no waste/empty canisters and all the "drawbacks" can be reasonably easily negated by saying that you just think its cool
>>2721850Neither. You and everyone else are using the most pragmatic option. >>2721859You don’t speak for everyone, faggot. >>2721819See pic for the latest survey. Liquid fuel isn’t that popular because it’s heavy and bulky compared to canisters.

Meanwhile here's my kit from 2017
>>2721819I've been there, and done that. I still use my gear because it works, and I like it. In fact, I prefer an actual fire when I'm soaked and cold to a tiny stove flame. >>2721863He's not me lol. Turns out, other people can have different opinions anon.>>2721885There's nothing wrong with it. It takes a few more minutes to set up, and that's the only drawback. Some anons just have a variant of autism where when someone uses a different style of kit, they become violently angry.
>>2721959>when someone uses a different style of kit, they become violently angryyeah i figured it was this. the only kind of stove i would be concerned about would be if someone managed to bring an electric one running on solar panels (or worse, a generator)
>>2721914None of those are real.
>>2721906>370 wood stoves vs 1 gasThe answer is clear.
>>2721959>they become violently angryThis, you see it in just about every thread that involves a piece of gear.
He’s made it to Blue Mountain Shelter, 50 miles from Springer. In his last update, he’d hiked 14 miles the day before then spent several hours vomiting at night. He’s convinced he’d swallowed a “parasite” and regurgitated it. It’s been recovered (see pic).A more likely, alternative theory is that he was severely dehydrated and physically stressed, which caused him to vomit into a grub.
