New Durston x-dome pre-orders opened and it looks like the tent I've been looking for these last 2 years. I'll be ordering asap.

I'm so pleased I didn't settle for something else. This ticks all my boxes and then some. The perfect tent? Just maybe.

Hi Dan
How’s the autism?
>>
>>2781242
How is it different from a 20-year-old Kelty Teton?
>>
>>2781264
It's 1/4 the weight...
>>
>>2781242
buy a fucking ad
>>
>>2781260

I'm not him but I do have autism lol
>>
I like the fact that he uses an alcohol stove and a caldera cone system.
>>
>>2781264
It’s different in every way other than they are both tents that use poles
>different materials
>different setup
>different size
>different shape
>different weight
>different price
>>
>>2781282
Half the weight, 3.5x the price. Probably worth it if you need it. I don't.
>>
>>2781264
Silpoly is a good blend of weight, waterproofness, and doesn't sag or absorb water like silnylon. The big design difference here is a clip-in inner tent with a fly using external poles that is truly freestanding. I.e. you can pitch this fly first with nothing but the fly. That's really handy for rain. I expect a solid inner for winter eventually. Also looks like the body is offset a little from the fly for a nice sized vestibule. Dan's autism for shelter design is very powerful.

Not a fully freestanding tent, and is almost the same weight and price
>>
>>2781242
>cross pole liability
I stopped watching as soon as I saw it. I'd never get a tent that'd be useless because the cross pole snapped.
>>
Interesting. The x-dome1+ weighs the same as the x-mid2 (985g vs 1005g)
>>
>>2781509
Free standing with the use of trekking poles which i always
>>
>>2781510
Any pole is a liability.
>>
>>2781469
>Durston x-dome
$350 for a tent is cheap as fuck. This thing has yet to prove itself, though. First prototype reviewed by an independent tester had its poles snap when setting it up in strong winds...
>>
>>2781510
what if the non cross pole snaps
>>
>>2781689
I'd think that I should've trusted my instincts and got a trekking pole tent like the Lanshan 2 person (1060g) or X-Mid 2 person (1005g). The X-Dome 1 is 985g), so all very close.
It looks like an excellent tent, but I'm just sick of dealing with poles. I do like that the xdome is very spacious for one person, but I'd get a 2 person tent that weighs the same just for more space and if there happens to be someone else.

>X-Mid 2 person
I've got one of these for using with my gf to replace my old shangri-la 3. The X-mid seems like a cool tent and look forward to when we can get out to try it for real, sadly it didn't arrive in time for our last trip. It is quite large and I'm interested to see how 'sensitive' it is to less than ideal pitching spots.
On trekking pole shelters, I've exclusively used then for my solo shelters since 2015 and for three season stuff they can't be beat.
>>
>>2781687

That was a prototype and not the finalised product with poles built to spec. Dan even commented as much on the video you're referring to.
>>
>>2781713
>That was a prototype
If you're sending prototypes to testers who are going to make public reviews, you make sure the quality is top-notch. It's like you're submitting closed alpha material to an open beta.

How does this compare to the Tarptent Arc Dome Ultra?
>>
>>2781687
>>2781713
What video is this? Link?
>>
I love my Big Agnes Copper Spur :)
>>
>>2781816
Different tents, even if they look very similar.
Arc Dome Ultra is a true 4 season tent, and heavier as a result. XDome is "3 season plus" which, for anyone doing real 4 season stuff (ie alpine treks) is not encouraging.
>>
>>2781687
>$350 for a tent is cheap as fuck.
Maybe for UL. If you're okay with a 4 lb tent, you can get it for $100 new. I got mine at a thrift store, perfectly clean like it was never taken out of the bag.
>>
>>2782069
I'm thinking about getting that model, but I'm a beginner so I'm not sure if I should invest that much, or maybe I should?

I got mine on a black friday sale. At full price they are quite expensive, but there are a few reasons I think it's worth the investment for a beginner.
It's super lightweight for the amount of internal space - I replaced my 1 man tent with the 2 man copper spur and am carrying less weight. This will make your hiking more enjoyable and you'll be happy to go more often. It also has lots of quality-of-life features, like internal pockets and colour-matched clips for setting up the fly. It's very idiot-proof to set up.

The only thing to consider is that anything "ultralight" is probably going to be less durable. If you are the type of person that is a bit rough on their gear, I would start off with something less expensive and a bit more durable. The Copper Spur feels like it could tear if you don't take care of it well.

I believe in you, and it is a fantastic tent, so go for it.

I dont see the point of tarptent/durston's innovations. Seems like zpacks does everything they do, just better and with better quality control.
>>
>>2782311
>better quality control
that's not the reputation that zpacks used to have. I think the x-mids are roomier than the zpacks equivalent tents.
>>
>>2781737
I'll take a pic of you using a ranger roll please
>>
>>2782311
>Seems like zpacks does everything they do, just better and with better quality control.
and also twice the price.
>>
I really like it, was considering an x-mid 2 but I don't want to have to bring trekking poles every time. looks roomy for a 1p tent as well.

I got a 6lb tent complete with rain fly, footprint, stuff sack, and all poles I use. It is three man and while it is big and heavier than the sub 4lb ones I see, it is very very room for me, my dog, my gear, and an extra person. I sometimes get jealous of manlets because they can fit in the 1/2 person UL tents for 3lbs, but I do not fit in those at all. The extra 2ish lbs to fit comfortably is worth not waking up being in a claustrophobic sarcophagus. If I backpacked for more than 3 nights yeah maybe I would be more into shaving weight
>>
>>2782350
Buy once cry once.
>>
>>2782470
or I could buy once and not cry at all. the main thing you're paying for with zpacks is the low weight, not that it's less likely to fall apart than a durston tent. I'm not a thru hiker, so I don't need a sub-1lb tent. that's the point.

What was Dan thinking when he sent him a prototype tent to review?
>>

Hate this guy. Pretty sure he's the same guy who made that retarded video about "gore-tex is a scam" and during the video he basically said "Gore-tex is bad unless you're in a cold and wet environment!"
Fucking obviously, retard
>>
>>2781525
No, the vestibule still has to be staked out.
>>
>>2781697
TarpTent came out with a two person tent similar to the x-dome, arguably better
>>
>>2783614
You are not remembering properly, he said they work best when it’s cold and DRY, as in low humidity.
Goretex jackets are great for skiing or mountaineering, but they aren’t breathable in rain, which is what 98% of people with one use it for.
It’s retarded to spend so much on a jacket that doesn’t even do the thing it’s supposed to do when you are using it, the “scam” is that the companies selling the jackets don’t tell you they actually aren’t breathable in the rain.
>>
>>2783674
>aren’t breathable in rain,
It's fucking WATER proof what the actual fuck did people expect?
>>
>>2783676
Uhh, for it to be waterproof and breathable like they are sold as?
Technically it’s true, but the lie is by omission in not saying it’s only under certain conditions that kinda defeats the purpose for most people
>>
>>2783676
>what the actual fuck did people expect?
To do what the marketing told them it would do. How fucking dense are you?
>>
>>2783857

Yes, but not at the same time.
