I'm interested in designing a gadget that lets you gauge the environment easily, and it would also have some other nice tools ontop.>thermometer >hygrometer>compass>aquitaine sundial>fire-starting magnifying glassThe thermometer would have a copper heat-sink to quickly equalize to air temp. The compass could go a few ways, but any basic magnetic compass would do well enough. The sundial would have a set of replaceable rings depending on your latitude.I think for the magnifying glass, it would be about 4 inches in diameter, I'd have to see about the levels though. The device isn't made to be super slim, but it is suppose to still be easily portable. What other things would be great for a device like this?

>>2811446>If you want to invent something to benefit the next generation of outdoorsi don't want to though, i just wanna benefit myself

>>2811506just because you can tell the time of the day by intuition, doesn't mean a watch is uselesssame with temperature & cardinal directions, its not about having it as a replacement for what you lack, its about bolstering what you already haveno, i don't need a steel axe, i could just use a rock i found on the ground, chip it into a hand axe, then cut tree limbs with thatam i actually going to do that? no, not unless i feel like itis it nice to know how to? yeah, its goodam i going to tell someone that its all they need to get around in life, and they shouldn't be wasting their money on a overly luxurious & unneeded steel tool? do i look like a fucking idiot to you?what the hell is with you fucking autists who can't understand what the actual point of a tool is?do you guys just sleep on the floor since beds are needed? seriously, i wanna know
>>2811515>since beds are needed?fuck, i hate typos
>>2811515>doesn't mean a watch is uselessunironically i worked in a bakery for years and there was this schizo (probably literally) that always knew what the time was within a minute or two every single timewe would quiz him occasionally and without blinking he would give it a few times someone forgot to turn the timer on or put in the wrong cook time and he would catch it every time besides one true story, he never wore a watch because he was one
>>2811515You're taking a tiny leap like not needing to know the humidity and falsely equating it to hand knapping a fucking rock to cut trees. I hope at least 1 brain cell of yours while typing this metaphor was like, "This is probably a really stupid example.">Thermometer If it's cold, put on a jacket; If there's ice, it's freezing. You explain to me the difference between 71° and 66°.>HygrometerIf it's humid, we're moisture wicking. If it's dry, wear a bucket hat.Explain the difference between 55% humidity and 60%.>CompassI'm not an unreasonable person, if it's really important to you to know the EXACT degree for navigation, then take one. Most outdoors people would be happy with just recognizing general direction. >SundialThis is troll. If you understand how a sundial works, you no longer need a sundial. You can determine hours of daylight remaining, time of year, and rough comparison to mid day without a sundial literally by reading books. Books even help you navigate at night. Knowledge invalidates some tools, sundial chief among them.>fire startingI made fun of you because you picked the LEAST effective fire starting method possible, that only works under pristine conditions. So far for your dream tool we've improved it to a small case of storm proof matches with a $1 compass super glued to the top. Where will research and development take is from here?
>>2811387its weird how modern people are so far removed from their own senses that they require gizmos to mediate their connection to the elements. can you not just tell the changing of the seasons with your own eyes ears nose and skin?!
>>2811387>sundialWhy would I use this instead of a $15 quartz wristwatch with a 5+ year battery that tells me the time to within a few seconds even if I'm out in the woods for months?
