What is your opinion on folding kayaks? I live where not every fishing hole has a trail leading to it and I'm not looking to drag a full sized kayak along with fishing gear everywhere I want to go
>>
>>2852036
How about you start by visiting some of these "fishing holes" with just the fishing gear and not a boat?
>>
>>2852051
Already have, I just like kayaking a lot
>>
>>2852036
that's what 10-11ft lightweight kayaks are for. like the crescent primo

Mine has been pretty good but i got it at the end of the season and only got 5 used out of it so far, so no comment on long term durability
The main downsides are that on the tuktek at least the plastic has sharp edges so you will cut yourself paddling unless you sand the edges. Also the sides are low and you sit right on the floor of the kayak, so water from paddling or large wakes can splash in leaving you with a wet ass.

I don't know if the oru ones are more hikeable, but the carry strap on these would benefit from some sort of extender or diy upgrade to be truly hikeable for long distances. I wouldn't want to hike this on rough terrain or much more than a mile because it is large and still fairly awkward to carry.

To hike in a watercraft I would choose a packraft.
>>
>>2852036
I folded your moms hairy kayak last night
>>
>>2852056
How can you drag this though? and how much weight do these support?
>>
I had the tucktec, it worked fine for a few times but after a while the folds got weak and it started to fold in on me every time I used it. It looks like they redesigned it a little so maybe it is better now. The core issue is that there's no side to side bracing and if you lean back even a little on the seat it will tend to kink the folds the wrong way, then they get weak and start to bend on their own.
>>
that's not a fishing kayak, that's a recreational kayak. it won't be viable once you load it up with gear and hopefully some fish
>>
>>2852036
are you gonna drag huge 15kg bag with kayak?
maybe you should try packraft? lightest one weight sub 2kg and packin into sizsze of 2L bottle
>>
>>2852506
Its fine with a small soft cooler and gear if you aren't loading up super heavy. There is a lot of floor room so you can distribute the load evenly
>>
>>2852501
you can portage kayaks under 60lbs, or use a kayak cart. that kayak has a pretty respectable weight capacity for it's size due to the bulbous nose in the hull.
>>2852506
you can fish from recreational kayaks just fine if you're a minimalist. most of the lightweight kayaks are rec kayaks and they paddle better. sit insides are also easier to portage.
>>
>>2852528
A single seat Kevlar canoe will weigh half as much as a kayak (I’ve seen as light as 24 lbs), and they’re way easier to portage because of the depth of the hull. But they cost like 3x as much, and are a bit less safe to paddle in shitty conditions.
>>
>>2852503
Thats why i went for them. They have a really decent return policy apparently
I figured 20 uses and then a free replacement would last 2-3 years and at that price point it isnt bad at all because of the convenience
>>
>>2852555
as you say, you're talking $2500 minimum. only the most serious or rich people buy shit like that. you can get something like a liquidlogic saluda 11 or 12 for a fraction of the price and carry it the same way.
>>
>>2852506
Tell that to my tucktec kayak I've had loaded down with a dozen and a half fuck decoys a shotgun and several dozen pounds of gear. It's worked great even loaded down with gear.
>>
>>2852555
Oh boy here comes the fucking canadian with his portage obsession

I have no experience with foldable kayaks but i do have a ton with pack rafts. They are great for packing obviously but I would not buy one for fishing lakes and other still bodies of water like OP wants to do. They are total sails and if there is any amount of wind whatsoever you’re going to spend as much time paddling into position and fighting the wind as you are fishing. You could pack in a small anchor but then you’re carrying a fucking anchor and besides, pack rafts aren’t meant for that kind of stuff so it’s going to be cumbersome to deal with and you’ll probably flip your raft trying to pull it up. Packrafts are more meant for rivers and rapids. They track like shit and are susceptible to wind in open water.
>>

You're right about getting blown around
A simple space saving anchor alternative to fish with is a stout bag with paracord and fill it with some rocks
I did that once on the folding kayak and it worked alright.
>>
>>2853117
That’s a good idea. I’d still personally not want to pull an anchor up while in a pack raft though. I’ve spent a lot of time in one and I still think I would definitely flip. I flipped like a fool on calm water once just bending over to grab my water bottle out of the water when it fell off my pack.

The cheap lightweight canoes are used. I’ll admit that if your don’t live near a canoeing area that it gets a lot harder to find them, but if you do, the outfitters sell off their old equipment for Pennie’s after a few seasons of use.
>>
>>2853114
wind is a bitch even in most kayaks, unless you're literally in a sit inside touring kayak. I can only imagine what it's like in a raft or foldable kayak. If you live somewhere with regular wind, you might as well skip all that shit and go to an efficient rec kayak at minimum. I have a fairly efficient sit on top and wind is still a motherfucker.

Ive had a good time using them in swamps, and small alpine lakes can be pretty quiet or have things sticking out to tie to. They also work in rivers with strong updraft winds.
Even when theres been wind on a lake I've found it fun to approach fishing as a run of a game, paddling out to a good spot and then cruising and casting along the way, then paddling back again.
>>
>>2853217
> paddle out then cruise back casting
the wind will almost ALWAYS change direction on you. at least where I live it does. I average about 5 miles per weekend against the wind 75% of the time. worst part is that you get blown diagonally towards the bank, so you constantly have to grab your paddle and adjust course. that's where rudders come in handy.
>>
The Oru kayaks are based. I don’t own one but have seen them
In action out on June Lake in the Sierra Nevada. Sleek and maneuverable from what I could tell. But they are pricey compared to the turteks. Or, you can be gmhardcore and make your own folding kayak… there’s a book on Amazon on how to make them out of coroplast. One guy made a very light kayak consisting of a wooden shell wrapped in plastic wrap!

Tie two ropes to the bag. Second rope goes to the centre of the bottom so when you lift it first it dumps the rocks.
>>
>>2852036
I bought one from tucktec years ago and it's ok. Kinda cumbersome to fold back up. It isn't fun to paddle in for long.
