I use the RF 100-500 and that’s considered the go to for canon mirrorless. But any lens that hits 400mm could realistically be considered a birding lens. A used bridge camera or dslr is a great way to get into the hobby for a couple of hundred bucks and definitely worth it. Most hardcore bird watchers actually use cheap old cameras because they don’t care as much about photo quality/features. Start simple and then go high end if you’re hooked, so many people start with a $800 camera and like $500 lens and just change that every couple of years. Way better to start with garbage, find out if you actually enjoy it, and then save up for something you can truly be happy with and just use that for a decade. Crop censor fans are the worst at this, dropping a grand like every other year to buy something they’ll never actually enjoy

I'd recommend a crop sensor and a 100-400 or so for most people though, ff isn't exactly ideal for birding where all you want is maximum reach

I'm the OP, see my sub par bird pics up top.

I just got into the whole thing and working with a 300mm lens, so far its OK, but I'm itching for a larger lens.

I'm torn between a 600mm sigma, the contemporary model, tamron g2 or sticking with nikon brand and getting the 200 - 500mm. Those fit my budget, used. About 1000cnd.

And then I figure I can slowly save to upgrade my old D60.

I guess I would go for the sigma, neither are really bad choices though, just be prepared for a workout. Ideally you'd get something that can be adapted or will work well on whatever you decide to upgrade to.

I did have a chance to get a d7200 and the 500mm nikkor for 1500... but my plan was to just forgo upgrading to another dslr, and head straight into mirrorless in a few years, my d60 has lots of life left in it, plus I figured if it would he good to learn on.

you want 600mm, anything more is unnecessary and barely noticeable, anything less and you'd wish you had more

there is a point of diminishing returns
the difference between 100 and 300mm is huge, but the difference between 600mm and 800mm is like a tiny pinch inwards

i only upgraded from 600mm because the lens had no stabilization and the competing lenses at that focal length weren't as sharp, it was otherwise adequate

going from 600 to 800 is equivalent to the change in fov from 100 to 133. It's just a ratio. so yes, it's not a huge difference compared to 100 - 300 like you mentioned, that would need to be 600-1800

It's not a high end filter like those, but it is spotlessly clean, and so is my front element. It's a Vivitar chinese one that came for free with a lens purchase from Abe's of Maine.
Here's an extreme crop to show what I mean, everything taken with high contrast or towards the sun has extreme ghosting going on around contrasting edges, and the bokeh looks like total crap, and the contrast is really low. Could this just be heat haze? I plan to test it more thoroughly tomorrow.

Don't be silly. An 82mm B+W uv filter is $110. Just for the protection alone it's worth it. Both from impacts and from dust / environmental damage.

I knocked over a camera with a 24-70 2.8 on it, the filter ring took the ding, shattered, lens was totally fine.

the one guy is being extreme, but he's right in that you don't need such high SS. I like to sit at 1000 when walking around and that's usually good for normal action.
Then if the subject is still I snap a few at 1000 to secure the shot, then I start working my way down in SS and getting lots of shots to increase my chance at a sharp hit at lower speeds. Usually only down to like 640.

Well update on this, got some Marumi filters to test and there may be a very, VERY slight quality hit when pixel peeping compared to the naked lens, but even at 400% I'm going back and forth on it. I will be keeping these on my lenses, it was definitely the fault of the cheapo filter beforehand.
