Which lens should I pick up after the nifty fifty?

I have a Canon R8, not opposed to EF lenses though. I'm enjoying shooting with the 50mm but want to expand my horizons a bit. Been thinking about grabbing an 85mm...would you go with the RF 85 f2 or the EF 85 f1.8?

Is an 85mm forcing me into doing strictly portraiture?

There's also a Samyang 14mm f2.8 for a reasonable price near me. Is manual focus that much of a hassle to shoot with?

Idk, what are your thoughts /p/?

Pic is an image I took with my 50mm 1.8

i think if you're not wanting to do a lot of portrait stuff (i'm NOT saying that's the only thing a 85 is good for mind you), then maybe you should go for a wide zoom next. they're great if you're a "walk around and photograph things" type of snapshitter. ef16-35 is still good, rf15-35 is lovely but expensive (i don't regret buying mine fwiw), and there's a new 14-35rf also which is cheaper. there's also the oddball 24-35 sigma which is a fun EF lens as it's basically the answer to the "28v35" fags so you can just have them both and 24 lol. it was my main lens before i got the EOS R.
but an 85 is a great lens to have as well, i have an ef 85/1.2 that works just fine on R body, and apparently the RF 85/2 is a pretty decent little lens for the money.

85mm does not limit you to portraiture. People even use them for street, architecture and landscapes.

if you often find yourself cropping, 85
if you often find yourself having to step back, 28
alternatively get a zoom for both because you already got a fast lens anyway

You can already see what an 85mm would be from your 50mm shots, just crop out the outside 20% of your photo and that’s what an 85 would have got.

It’s just a bit more zoomed in than a 50 but nothing crazy. Unless you shoot wide open you won’t get much extra you can’t with the 50.

200-600mm for birds
70-200 for people fashion
50 for general
24-35 for landscapes street events with multiple people subjects

at first I got like 28-70mm zoom for minolta, sold it, then got 50mm for nikon, after that 28mm, it is not anyhow better after enter the collector, just a hobby

something in the 80 to 135 range. It will force you to focus on details and composition. The change in perspective will also have a distinctive look from your photos with 50 mm.
I would not go for a wide angle.

I would not go for a telephoto.

Thanks, yeah I was there for a wedding, it was an awesome spot :) I took some cool pictures I think, here's another one that feels v comfy

>>4309191
Definitely mostly trying to decide between a 35 & 85. 85 would be nice because I wanna start doing more ""street portraiture"" and it feels like kind of an easy way to get semi impressive looking images with nice bokeh

just wide angle with a crop, unless you want muh blurrrs n shieet which is cringe if overdone

the distortion is related to distance, not focal length
>>

just get a Hasselblad H6D-100 with the 24mm and you can have every focal length that you want!
>>
desu I only ever use my 24 f2.8 these days

Underrated lens. Same with the 28 2.8.
