/fgt/ daily reminder (courtesy by anon): one stop per decade is (generally) bullshit
>negative film ages better than positive
>black and white better than color
>slow films better than fast
>storage conditions (dry/cool) matter more than years
>Negative film is shot 1 or 2 stops overexposed and then PULLED in development so that you build more density in the exposure and develop less such that the fog is limited
>slide/positive film is shot at box speed or overexposed and pulled.
>if you home develop you can also use benzotriazole as a restrainer for the the first developer in E6 process

Going to say a dark horse here, gold 200. It’s great for color shooting. I don’t shoot any cheap b&w as I fucking hate foma with a passion and don’t see the point in tri-x not being the default cheap b&w

Thanks my dude. I thought these had some feel to em. I'd give lomo a shot if you are bored or just want a off normal look. I'd stick to their non crazy colored ones.

Yeah, they kinda meme but still fun. Their stuff is mainly kodak with some chem wash or something to give it some "sovl". Metropolis is a stock/style they sell that is designed for muted saturation and punchy contrast. It has an expired film look and goes for hungry teen homeless looking cool on the concrete in Berlin vibes. That said they can be fun to shoot and do make some pretty nice images but I still dont take them 100% serious.

I'm asking for suggestions. Maybe someone will suggest something I haven't thought about and provide a compelling reason or example. I know Portra(AS IN PORTRAIT) is good for portraits. I don't need it suggested.
>>
I found out something really cool today when making 4x5 wetplates/contact prints.

Contact prints where your magnification ratio is close to or greater than 1:1 look amazing because the subject matter is larger rather than smaller than in real life. Even if the plate/print is relatively small it feels big because of the subject matter being magnified!
Maybe obvious to some, but I found it to be an interesting realization after I did some ~3x mag macro shots.
>>
>>4311123
Haha im glad you dig those bc technically I shouldnt have shared them, its against the rules to photograph these areas, but I couldnt resist
>>
What are some good film stocks that have a cooler/greener look like 400H and are easy to buy today?

Would anyone here be interested in my SWC? Figured I'd try here before listing it elsewhere and have to pay fees.

>>4311224 is the closest to a serviceable composition (even if a banal symmetry one), but you were still a step or two too far to the left. And forgot to focus.
If those are the best you got out of the roll then God damn anon you need to keep practicing, and slow down and start thinking about what you're doing before you release the shutter. Have a mental checklist, exposure, focus, composition, and make sure all are checked. If they're not, then don't waste film on it.
And have some critical eye for your own work, even if this is the first roll you shot then you should be able to tell what's in focus and what is not. And just because they're your least shit doesn't mean they're worth posting, they're still shit.
Good luck, hope to see some BETTER work from you at some point.

>>
>>4311219
1) Expose for what you need and just except that either top or bottom is going to clip.
2) expect it to be extremely sharp and detailed as far as the middle is concerned (like the anti fomapan)
3) Be ready for the grain
4) handles pushing (dono about pulling) very well though i shoot it at box speed 90% of the time

Play around with light. it handles contrast very well. anything that glints like water or a window blowing out looks wonderful.
The film to take for a sunny day .

If you admit this, I understand your question even less. Why not use what works and is a known quantity? Slight differences in colour temperature are not going to improve your snapshits. I don’t get it.
>>
>>4311566
I know it does but what makes it special for me is that excellent tri-x worthy tone separation that has at box speed.
But i use use it more as a street , then a portraiture film.

Just shot a theater production on it yesterday.
(Attribute any spelling mistakes to me staying for drinks with the cast and only getting home at 2 am)

D-96 or D-76 depending on what i want/have.

I've had really bad luck sending it to the lab. IDK why but they dont wash it properly. Maybe it's just confirmation bias but i dont trust them with XX film.

The worst fucking film out; not fast, not sharp, not cheap, won't hold a latent image for more than 5 minutes, takes ages to process.
Its only strength is that you can blow it the fuck out with contrast and it keeps building an image without blocking up. It's probably pretty easy to print from as well.

Story time:

I had just finished a photoshoot where I used quite a bit of bulbs and flash photography and being too lazy to disassemble it all completely was carelessly shoving it into my car when two police officers approached me asking to have a look at my photos.

I tried to explain that it was film (which didn't seem to mean much to em). I was then told that there had been a local creep taking upskirts of kids and that one way or the other they would have to look at my pictures.

In my most patient voice I explained that I would have to develop the film first, Which they interpreted as a delaying tactic, as they then threatened to confiscate my film until they could determine that they were safe.

I was only allowed to go after I called up the model to confirm where I was and to show them some Instagram photos she took.

Fucking pigs man.
>>

Thin dude, no bo.
My honest guess is they mistook me for a tranny. I have shoulder length hair and had nail polish on (it's called style look it up lol)
I work with people all the time so i don't generally give off a creepy vibe.

But who knows what's normal among artsy people is probably the first sign of the Antichrist to suburban cops.
>>
>>4311554
27 rolls of 35mm would cost the same lol. Granted it'd be more exposures.

>>4311572
I've never used Kentmere but foma is trash. The images themselves are ok but the curl level of the film image is insane and you have to always shoot it at half box speed to get usable images. Foma is trash.

I doubled for recipro, though I did find a rough guide that went up to 8mins ish, this was 1 hour at 5.6 on the 45mm f4 for my 6x7. It's a touch under, I wish i'd gone a half stop brighter on the aperture, and then longer on the exposure as it would've given me cooler star trails. There's a weird dip in light at some point in the trail though, my guess is someone didn't see my camera setup in the dark and blocked it a bit while I was doing digital work

how fucked would I be for shooting Fuji 200 (we all know it's Gold 200 essentially) at f/5.6 1/250 in broad daylight? I think that's like three stops overexposed, thinking with Sunny 16 in mind. My subject was a few cows in a grass field, chilling outside where there were no shade.

gonna get it developed in a few days, but I'm not feeling optimistic about those particular pics

I'd say that's between 2 to 4 stops over, depending on how much sky you had in the frame.
I shot a roll of it at 100 and it looked perfect developed normally. The neg is denser, but overall it has a slightly softer, almost pastel flatter look. In some frames it looks even better to me than at 200. In a very few it looks worse.
Pic is one of the worst frames and it's still perfectly workable, I'd just dial it 1/3rd stop down when scanning and fix it further with curves. (This is a raw quick preview scan on full auto and no ICE obviously).
Anyway it's a consumer neg that has a ton of latitude. If the cow pics are critically important, then have it developed at -2. If not very important, and you metered the rest of the roll correctly, then try -1 for a middle ground. Post results.

So I found these, apparently superb lenses, for a great deal on ebay, but the picture had nothing for me to understand the scale of them. The 900mm f16 is truly absurd. Apparently it has a large enough projection for 20x24 negatives.
I WILL be using it with my 4x5 sinar once I drill a plate for it. Stay tuned for more absurdity.

>>4311795
Still going on. The tent has a few flaws and annoyances, but it's good enough for what you pay, all things considered. I wouldn't pay the normal 350 for it...
Lots of room for wetplate printing, but if you're using an enlarger I wouldn't plan on doing anything more than 35mm/contact printing with one of those tiny enlargers. My Leitz v35 enlarger with a 16x20 easel barely fits, and I have to keep the chemistry on the shelf beneath the enlarger. It works, but it is cramped. A custom L shaped table would be nice for it.

it'll never be the same, though
because it's not
but like... why not just shoot film?
and if not shooting film, why try to emulate it? just as a gimmick? that's kinda pointless
>>
I am going to take photos of the house where they killed Trotsky using my Kiev 4 and Svemacolor, surely that will organize the working class.

How would I go about getting real crunchy pics? High ISO, half-frame? Can I just push any 400-speed film to 3200? It's been a while since I've shot film and I've never really gotten into black and white, but I've got an idea for a project

Best photo in /fgt/ in a long time. Congrats!
Are you sure the brightness dip wasn't just clouds? If someone blocked the entire setup then there would be completely empty gaps, no?
A little surprised there are no plane and satellite streaks at all, maybe they were to faint for iso 50.
And I wonder what are those?
>>
>>4311871
>And I wonder what are those?
don't trust me because I'm talking out of my ass, but I'd like for someone to explain to me if that makes sense
could it be some sort of color shift caused by refraction of light/internal reflections on the lens or something like that occurred in specific positions?
because they seem to be roughly at the "same spot" in relation to the length of the adjacent streak, and their brightness seem to match those of the adjacent streaks as well
Again: I have no idea if that's even possible, but I'd like someone to explain if I'm right or wrong or somewhere inbetween and why
because that seems to be something interesting

you can put matte tape on a piece of glass and tape it to the film window.
alternatively tape directly over the film gate but you might get flatness issues then.

500mm+ focal lengths. Old barrel lenses, you can research different ULF lenses, the rodenstock apo ronar is fairly common on ebay up to 900mm...

Look at this incredibly enormous nikkor lens my search algorithm graciously showed me. I'm tempted to buy it for the size alone. I don't think it would even fit on a 140mmx140mm sinar lens plate!

The fabled shitcan only got a rep by not being dredged from quite as dire a sinkhole as the apsc glass sony put out for their SLuT memes, not for being objectively better than anything decent.

The last 2 because I haven't done anything darkroom wise.

Also the cameras are more fun to use and there so much more variety, you can use a camera made in the 1930 or a fully automatic one from the 90s with the same film!

People are also more curious about them and they would be more willing to be photographed with one (took a TLR to an anime convention and everyone was asking about it lol)

> Move to a new place where I can't develop at home.
nigga what? you can develop film in a hotel bathroom sink
> The camera develops shutter problems. And I lose 5 rolls.
this is why I do a roll on the day I shot it, just portion your chemicals into smaller working batches and don't mix the developer until you're ready to use that batch, seems to last just as long as mixing up a lot and doing lots of rolls at once.
>>
>>4312611
If a change in 1 stop of exposure severely underexposed your film then you got bigger problems (unless it was slide I guess)

E100 looks great IMO.

Speaking of which I ordered some e100 to shoot for the northern lights and my shipment was delayed. So I now only have either rollei infrared or lomo metropolis (which I've never shot). Which should I shoot?
>>
I'm shooting a roll of foma 400 on a point and shot camera. I don't know how to manually adjust the ISO down to 200 so I'll have to figure something out. Should I just develop it at 400 or develop it at 800 essentially overdeveloping by a stop? This is why I don't like automatic cameras, you can't easily adjust all settings.
>>
>>4312741
You gotta hack into the DX encoder mainframe with electrical tape and tinfoil
>>
>>4312740
the infrared might be cool looking with the lights. not sure if they emit infrared though. maybe worth researching
>>4312741
you can buy DX code stickers (of any iso) to place over the one on the roll, or just develop at 800.
>>
>>4312730
no portra 160 or gold? guess they probably get better margins on the more expensive shit
tmax 400 is excellent but it's pretty expensive so I don't shoot it anymore

don't sleep on your local mom and pop thrift stores, lads! just picked this whole setup up for 40 bucks. they thought it was some kind of surveying tool (though, if you really think about it...) and priced it as-is. It looks like its been sitting in that case out in the open for a while, bit beat up and the shutter is slow, but i'm hopeful to get it going well again. one of the holders had a sheet of film when i opened it, and now i suspect that maybe they all might, but sitting out exposed and free for anyone to handle, they may all be trash. worth trying to develop? never done sheet film before. Thankfully i have a lomograflok already so may be able to get test shots soon. still, for 40bux, even it it doesn't work not a big loss.
>>
>>4312791
Super based. I'd toss the film and get some foma100 to test and have fun with. You could possibly figure out the film type based on the notch pattern if you wanted. 210mm will be quite nice for portraits. :D

If you shake a film holder you can usually hear film knocking around if there's any in there. That's how I check.
>>
What is a good alternative to Negative Lab Pro? The software is good, but Lightroom is absolutely retarded and I hate it. I need a stand alone alternative software. I am willing to pay money.
>>
>>4312800
yeah i'm thinking if they do have film its all junk. the camera was out on the thrift store floor in the open by the checkout, so everyone passing by could have played with it and opened the holders. would probably be a waste of time and chems to try and dev them. and i don't have a sheet film tank holder anyway lol. The holders all seem very cheap flimsy plastic also, and some have cracks and tape holding them together. probably not worth keeping. The lomo instax back is graflok so im going to try to get that going on here before i sink money into film.
>>
>>4312804
Yeah those film holders look like they may be no good... they're cheap enough used.

That instax back looks really cool, and it will be an excellent tool to practice using the camera. There's a lot to learn and practice if you want to get the absolute most from a monorail/4x5.

decided to say fuck it and clean all the holders out, and yeah, this film was all toast. 13 sheets in 5 holders, and only one was loaded emulsion side facing out lol. some of them are darkened and they're all scratched up. and the holders are junk, tape holding the end flaps and keeping them from splitting. oh well, like you say they're cheap and sttill was a good value for the camera itself. i just hope the slow speeds loosen up just with use.
>>
>>4312808
you seem to know what you're talking about fren, it also came with a soft bag-like leather material bellows besides the normal scrunchy one on there already. what's that for?
>>
>>4312809
The slow speeds will not loosen up with time, but you will get a feel for the shutter speeds. A couple of my shutters are over a stop off on the slower shutter speeds. I just kinda eyeball it.

You can always use it for wetplate colloidion where the exposure times are in seconds! :D

>>4312811
That's a wide angle bellows. It allows you to put the front and rear standard very close to each other, and still utilize movements.

I know the feeling from wetplate. It's always great to see the image appear when you drop your plate in the fixer. Very addictive!

A binocular reflex viewing hood is one of my favorite accessories for my sinar. It doesn't replace a loupe, but it gets close, no messing around with a stupid blanket, and it flips the image so you see it right side up.

For lens ranges I suggest:
90mm, your 210mm, a 350mm, and maybe a 150mm. Those will serve you very well.
If you go past 500mm you'll need to buy extra rails, front standards, a second tripod holder and tripod, and more bellows...

My suggestion is to get an older 65mm or 90mm super angulon like pic. Excellent lens for the price, and wide angle 4x5 is really great.
