I was able to call in a male 2 weeks ago actually(pic rel, not the best due to him being above me and couldn't get a better angle).
I have really good luck calling in cardinals for some reason, suck ass for any other bird lmfao.
I actually really like female cardinals, great contrasty and poppy colors on them.

That's cool, didn't know there were red eyed doves. Creates a cool contrast on the blue.
I get a lot of mourning doves(pic rel from today) in my area, but their eyes are pretty boring in comparison.

bit of a newb question, but when I try and upload these photos directly from the SD card 4chan says that there is an embedded file in the photo. Does anyone know how to fix that? I'm currently just importing and exporting through GIMP.

It's because of SOOC jpegs have an embedded edit from your settings.
Although jpegs sooc are convenient most look really bad with how the body does denoising and lack of chromatic aberration fixing(examples being the purple CA on this flamingo >>4402986 and the green CA on the bars of the cage here >>4402991)
I'm assuming the built in denoising is crushing the details on the eagles specifically making their feathers look like flat textures from a ps2 game.

This is more so of a problem on lower end bodies but I don't even use it on my r6mkii personally. I'd advise if your body supports it, shoot both jpeg + raw so you can do SOOC sharing, and manual fixing/editing.
>>4402988
>>4402992
Get a cheap bird/whatever plushy that has solid plastic eyes to practice on to better learn focusing with your camera, various AF settings, and it's limits. Partially the issue with both of these besides missing focus is a super slow shutterspeed.
For birds especially on a older/lower end camera I'd swap to spot metering instead of center weighted.

I'd tone it back on the color grading/white balance, it's blasting orange and taking away some of the pretty purples on the pigies

Everyone edits differently mang, for me I edit to how it looked to my eyes then adjust for what's best for the image with minor adjustments to keep it "more true".
For example with these recent ones of mine, very shallow sun with a lot of yellow casting, so I made the lighting a bit cooler than what it was to bring out more of the colors that'd get washed out but still kept most of the warmth if that makes sense.
This one I made cooler >>4402929
Vs pic rel which is what it looked like to my eyes with a different bird. But was able to keep the green showing in the head so left it mostly alone.

And dude I can't imagine how much of a pain in the ass it is to do wildlife photography on film especially birds, the OGs were on a whole different level not including manual focus lenses. I shot a lot of film as a kid before the digital compacts started coming around, and don't miss it one bit lmfao. The process is cool as fuck though and appreciate it.

Yeah, and the pros back in the day had the benefit of super fast films that just don't exist anymore. One day I may try to shoot some birds on Kodak P3200 once I get my hands on a Minolta Alpha 9 (shutter speeds up to 1/12000 and 5.5fps auto drive) but that's about the fastest film you can get and it's black and white. Colorwise you're stuck trying to push Portra 800 or one of the various 500T repacks to 1600, since Fuji discontinued Natura 1600 in 2017.

I took pic rel on my digital body but using a manual focus 400mm Sigma that I got for my Minolta X700, and it's a miracle that it came out as good as it did.
>>
>>4403497
They were truly a different breed not going to lie, I know a lot of them relied on prefocusing branches/perches and basically relying on the bird to land there and do a quick adjust.
But insane to think of the OG natgeo photographers were pulling off, especially with birds in flight. Honestly I'd love to watch a documentary about wildlife photographers that shot film back then and talk about the process, challenges, and tips/tricks they used to work around their limitations.
Not only would that be cool to learn about, bet there's a ton of lessons to take from that and can apply to digital in a lot of ways.

How do film iso levels compare to a FF sensor since they're relatively equal? i.e. like some of my shots I posted even at f8 are sub 600 with good light at 1/800-1250 , I feel like porta 800 could work in some high light environments, granted you'll need to bump the SS due to lack of IBIS and IS and all that if they're relatively equal.
Might be limited to sharp angle sun light or having snow bouncing light to help, but may be doable.
>Minolta Alpha 9 (shutter speeds up to 1/12000 and 5.5fps auto drive)
That's pretty wild to me, film wise I only used like cheap disposables and a lowerend leica(high chance it was a knockoff kek) my grandfather had but I was like 6-10 at the time so never got serious or actually learned film photography properly so I don't know shit about film lmao.

>Honestly I'd love to watch a documentary about wildlife photographers that shot film back then and talk about the process, challenges, and tips/tricks they used to work around their limitations.
yeah that would be dope af

>How do film iso levels compare to a FF sensor since they're relatively equal?
I've found that they don't really compare one to one. For one thing, you generally want to overexpose negative film because you can recover more from the highlights than the shadows, which is kind of the opposite of digital. Then there's the fact that pretty much every film is different, some have a lot of latitude and some don't. And as you said, you're going to need faster shutter with film because you don't have IBIS or OIS. It would definitely be doable with portra 800 under the right conditions like those you suggested though.

>That's pretty wild to me, film wise I only used like cheap disposables and a lowerend leica(high chance it was a knockoff kek) my grandfather had but I was like 6-10 at the time so never got serious or actually learned film photography properly so I don't know shit about film lmao.
The Alpha 9 was the last camera Minolta made and was just about the most advanced 35 mm film SLR ever made, along with the Canon EOS-1V. Then Minolta died and its technology was bought by Snoy, which is why Snoy still uses the Alpha model name, and actually Snoy A-mount lenses are usable on the later Alpha 9 models with the right firmware. The tech was crazy, but the writing was already on the wall by then. Although personally my favorite film cameras are the old ones, I've mostly been shooting 4x5 large format and 6x9 medium format on Graflex press cameras lately. Probably the most impressive photographers in history IMO were the absolute mad lads who took action shots on large format with a fucking Graflex. Like that guy who took the shot of that Japanese communist getting sword-ed. Insane skill.

Are any of these good? I don't really take pictures all that often, but I saw this heron yesterday and just felt compelling to photograph it.

I've seen worse. This pose is awesome. You should take more photos of birds. Watch Simon D'entremont on youtube. My biggest tips for you are:
- get lower so the ground isn't behind the bird. This makes a huge difference and is always possible.
- get you horizon level. It's easy to fix a little in post but at a certain point it requires cropping
- shoot in better light. Shoot during golden hour
- use a faster shutter speed. You can use slower for a large bird on the ground but if it's moving you'll want faster

Thank you so much for the helpful advice. I really appreciate you taking the time to critique.
>get lower so the ground isn't behind the bird. This makes a huge difference and is always possible.
>get you horizon level. It's easy to fix a little in post but at a certain point it requires cropping
I don't really have a good grasp on framing, so I will try that out next time. Also, I think my hands are not centered correctly in my natural shooting position. I will work on leveling that out.

>shoot in better light. Shoot during golden hour
>use a faster shutter speed. You can use slower for a large bird on the ground but if it's moving you'll want faster
I will definitely need to read up on how to get the best out of any situation/subject as far as camera settings go. I am probably on factory/auto settings.

Once again, thank you. I will check out that photographer. From a quick glance after googling his name, he has some really cool stuff.

tips for shooting owls? I always wanted to get some good photos of the local great horned owls, but they're crepuscular/nocturnal and damned hard to find.
>>
>>4409896
Just go out there and have a hoot.
>>
>>4409896
You got to find where they roost during the daytime. Shooting owls at night is basically impossible unless you blast them with a flash, and if you do that you're a colossal niggerfaggot because it can blind them. Owls will typically have one or two places where they regularly roost during the daytime, and if you can find them there they will generally sit pretty still in the tree as long as you keep a reasonable distance and don't disturb them. Easiest way to find roosts is to look for whitewash - birds shit a lot, so if you see a tree with a whole bunch of white streaks going down it, in an area where you've heard them hooting, chances are you found a roosting spot. GHOs are relatively easy, because they're frequent and loud hooters, and as an apex predator they're not easily spooked. Barred owls are also fairly easy to find for the same reason, and they can be more active during the daytime.
>>
>>4409896
This is actual a more general tip for birds of prey, but listen for songbirds throwing an absolute fit. I've found owls several times by following ruckus. At day often owls will just want to chill so they'll frequently just sit there while they work themselves up. Be respectful also, bird photographers have a nasty habit of bothering the fuck out of owls. Bring a long tele or get ready to crop. It'll make for a better shot by compressing how far off the ground it is anyway, making appear closer to eye level. On the plus side, you can often shoot them at base ISO as they aren't likely to move much.

This. Chickadees are great for this. They HATE owls, especially small owls like Saw Whets. They also communicate threat level with their calls: the more "dee" notes you hear in the "chick-a-dee-dee-dee" alarm call, the more serious they think the predator is. A lot of "dee"s probably means there's a small owl nearby. Crows are great if you're looking for bigger owls like GHOs, corvids and GHOs are natural enemies and crows are very loud when mobbing a predator.
>>
>>4409896
they are very hard to find, even if you go to specific locations where they have been seen recently you will often come back empty handed
most birders i know use call payblack for owls (at night), not really ethical though
ive gone out looking for owls maybe like 30 times and only seen about 6 or so, even with NVG and thermal vision.

>>4409901
only blinds them for 30sec to 5min max
unethical but overblown, just never do it to a flying owl or scare them into flying while blinded

>>4409902
>listen for songbirds throwing an absolute fit
this is called "mobbing" also works great for finding snakes and anything else that eats birds
