its quite radical, but i like it, the first one looks like some disposable film, do you use lightroom for that or is it something else? (just cause its color noise, you dont usually get that in photo editing software)

Glad you like it. I edit most of my photos using dehancer, which has very nice built in colour profiles and grain emulation with chroma noise.
Damn, yeah small world, small board! I still have that thread archived somewhere I think. The LX3 ended up becoming my most used camera, still love it to this day.

dehancer is quite drastic with lower resolution images, even the smallest grain size is pretty large i think.

Yeah they probably would've been crushed indeed. Dehancer has a resolution slider which allows you to choose whether the grain crushes the details or not, pretty handy honestly.
Also true, dehancer needs more work with low res stuff, you've got to scale back the grain significantly to get something usable.

Larger sensors with more and larger pixels combine a higher sampling rate with a greater photon well capacity, meaning they have the overall accuracy to capture finer variations in color and tone than smaller sensors with fewer and smaller pixels (shallower photon wells, made even worse with old gapped microlenses) and attempts to capture fine contrast look harsh and unnatural or flat and lifeless.

Even making the sensor larger while maintaining the pixel size has a significant tonality improvement (a7rv <<<<<< GFX100).

Very fluffy. The difference between the shit converter and the purpose built converter is night and day. The files actually act like raw files so it is a lot easier to edit now. I think my problem was either not having the right version of python or my C drive was full. Lol.

This makes perfect sense. Thanks for the explanation. It still boggles my mind that this is a 2006 era camera. Modern high end full frames definitely out resolve it, but I think the IQ exceeds or equals a lot of modern cameras at base iso. Low light is terrible as was the case with basically all of these older mfdb. Ai denoise works suprisingly well so it isn't too bad...

I dont think 35mm and smaller sensors do well at all with pixels smaller than 5 micrometers (which is already pushing it). High res is high detail even at high ISO but when you look at d850, 5ds, r5, a7rv, etc photos there is some flatness and loss of color at lower ISOs versus their lower resolution cousins and a lack of improvement under 200% size. There’s also a noticeable pop drop and sovl loss between older, lower resolution crop sensors and the new "we can pixel peep too!" ones like the om5/om1/gh6/xt5. There’s a reason terry stuck with his 12mp gf1. It has sovl.

My prof stresses neutral exposure, 400 ISO, and 1/6 shutter speed. But I feel like I can fuck with the shutter and get away with it, unless the standard is just "as close as you can to neutral"

Depending on the camera, that's a pretty slow shutter speed and you might get some camera shake, or you'll have subjects be blurred unnaturally (as was the case with that train photo, where it looks more out of focus rather than in motion).

Something to keep in mind is to do what you can to get the photo, aiming for being "technically perfect" can mean that you'll miss a photo; it's better to actually get the shot than not. The most common setting most people will use is Aperture priority with auto ISO, since that will cover the majority of situations.

Holy fuck, am I reading this wrong or is that accurate? You do not need to be going that high, a street scene like that is f/11 at the absolute maximum, probably more f/8.

My advice for now would be to experiment with the following
>Aperture: f/5.6 or f/8
>shutter speed 1/200 minimum
>ISO: auto in challenging/varying light, 100 or up to 800 in regular light
>autofocus and set the focus point on the subject or about 2/3rds of the way into the frame
Those are really basic settings that would come up for most photos and it might improve things for you.
