And it's cheap and easy to keep launching drone attacks at the naval vessels until they do run out of interceptors. At which point the vessel will have to immediately leave station to head to a safe port to resupply.

Yeah the Phalanx CIWS is not an optimal system to deal with small drones. Pantsir, Tunguska, LvKV90, Gepard, or even old systems like Bofors 40mm towed, ZSU-23-2, and ZSU-23-4 are what you'd want to use against drones like Geran/Shahed. Essentially relatively cheap systems, with cheap ammunition, that you can have as many as possible of to engage as many targets as possible.
As stupid as it sounds it might even be worth considering sticking small AA guns onto warships like they did in the past, like a couple of Zsu-23-4 turrets.

The Phalanx fires bog standard 20 mm ammo, that's about as cheap as a gun based AA system will get. Even the dumb 35/40 mm ammunition will be more expensive than that. Newer 35/40 mm armed IFVs/anti air systems use smart ammunition like AHEAD or proximity fused HE-FRAG, at which point you increase the kill probability but are significantly more expensive.

The ATACMS boosters aren't surprising, those are detached from the warhead before terminal approach I think (nose section indicates it was completely shot down though), but I always find downed, mostly intact cruise missiles interesting. You'd think they'd be designed to blow up anyways, or at least have the setting to do so in a serious war.

huh thought it was 30mm. That definitely changes the equation. Then they need a lot more of these systems, though the problem is still that, as the other anon pointed out, they aren't really optimal for engaging a lot of small targets coming in at once. I think the risk is that at long ranges, the system lacks accuracy (you can't use 20mm proximity fuze) and stopping power, and that larger calibers are more suitable. This was definitely the experience in ww2.

Th Mutt propaganda apparatus wants proxy war in Vietnam sooooo badly. But all attempts have failed.
It's even more unlikely than proxy war in Taiwan province, which itself is unlikely.

The closest thing to proxy war right now is Failipines and Myanmar.

>though the problem is still that, as the other anon pointed out, they aren't really optimal for engaging a lot of small targets coming in at once.
He's wrong. Like I said, the Centurion C-RAM is pretty much the same thing and works well enough against things that are significantly harder to hit.
The frontal aspect of a Geran is also larger than that of anti ship missiles the Phalanx was designed against, it's going a small fraction of the speed and it's made entirely of fibreglass and unarmored warhead, so 20 mm AP/HE will be more than enough to take that down with very few or even a single hit. There's very good reasons why any nation designing AShMs ends up with far more capable systems.
That said in a prolonged conflict these drones could still have their place in anti shipping duties, even if it was just running the enemy fleet out of interceptors/munition. The US (and the chinese too) are switching to fibrelasers for close range defense though, at that point they'll probably be completely useless again.

>"Norway could - without it costing the country too much - take the lead in ensuring peace in Europe, and protect the democracies on the continent, but does strangely little, and only gets richer and richer from a dirty oil that warms the planet,"

it's not happened yet but it's in the works. not yet but in the works. that being said all they've created in the west is a disloyal population, that'll sell out to the highest bidder. so whatever they miscalculated about only needing a small private army when in reality you need a huge army. ten percent of the population minimum.

>You don't. That's the guideline for engaging ballistic threats to make sure they're intercepted. Against targets that are significantly easier to hit you wouldn't waste two interceptors, especially if they're going slower than a Fiat 500 down the highway, allowing you to reengage them on the odd chance of a miss.
The Gerans have proven harder to intercept than expected.
This is why we, when Hruks were allowed to film, saw so many of them reaching their targets in Queef despite Patriots and S300s there.

>That's a number you just pulled out of your ass. The almost identical Centurion C-RAM performed well enough against mortar and artillery attacks which obviously shows it has a far lower engagement time.
No, it is an estimate based on Kashtans and CIWs accuracy and engagement times against various targets.
@500 meters, the Geran in this case would have moved 30 meters between the time the CIWS fires and the time of impact.
Any vertical or horizontal zig zagging of various timings would require several bursts to take out.
10 seconds is a reasonable estimate.

Here is a C-RAM under optimal conditions engaging a single target (on camera) for 8 seconds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1ZbV3xr5Kk
Now assume it would be maneuvering as well and not fly in a straight line.

That burst was also ~300-400 bullets out of a total capacity of 1100.
So by following the example in the vid, there is only ammunition enough for 3-4 engagements per CIWS.

2 Gerans are thus the saturation threshold, 3 ought to be guaranteed to let 1 pass through.
(Again going back to the example, and let's say it is 8 seconds per engagement, that's 488 meters travelled for target 1 @1km)
>A battery will have a mix of PAC2 and 3 TELs, the 16 missile PAC 3 TEL is common enough. I haven't seen an 8 missile PAC2 TEL ever, I don't think that fits.
Well, this might be a PAC 3 then..
16 missiles, what missiles would fit in that? It seems very densely packed for a Patriot launcher, is it SkyCeptor?

Officers in the field obviously get assault rifles and the same kit as other soldiers. Those behind the front-line planning and such, I'm not really sure about, but it used to be that they were expected to carry pistols at most/all times, but I'm not sure if that's the case any more.
>>473244841
The phalanx uses automatic targeting, so although it may have been optimized to engage slow-flying attack drones, it's not guaranteed that this has actually been done. If not, you're launching long salvos against very cheap drones, wasting ammunition and making yourself susceptible to saturation attacks.
>20 mm AP/HE will be more than enough to take that down with very few or even a single hit.
Now that I think about I honestly don't know if a propeller-driven missile or drone would be more or less durable than a turbojet or rocket-driven missile. If no more, then perhaps 20mm is not entirely unsuitable, though again the targeting algorithms should be optimized against drones or it will be trouble, especially as the US lacks effective short-range missiles.

Pic rel is the systems that Ukraine seem to have received.
And those are quad packs.

But more on the Arleigh Burke, the most common missile is the SM-2 which has been used in Ukraine and launched by Buk TELs.
These performed poorly.
The ESSM ofc comes quad packed, but there is no information on what the Arleigh Burkes carry. In theory they could go out with 384 ESSMs in which case they are nearly impossible to saturate.
But if they have a combat load and a typical 48 SM-2/Sm-6 + 32 ESSM then a single Sunflower 200 battery could saturate it.
In the case of the Daring class, currently it only has 48 VLS cells for SAMs, so 48 Gerans are enough for a saturation attack even assuming a 90% intercept rate and 1 missile per Geran.

>>473245957
>Those 20mm have time fuzes right? But are too small for [practical] proximity fuzes, if I am not mistaken?
I would sure hope so, but it's difficult to say what fragmentation capacity a 20mm has.

This is what Wiki says
>20×102mm tungsten Armor-piercing discarding sabot or High-explosive incendiary tracer
So it may have a time fuse but not sure. Seems like it is impact detonation, perhaps with a self destruct time.

>This is why we, when Hruks were allowed to film, saw so many of them reaching their targets in Queef despite Patriots and S300s there.
I very much doubt that, the Geran has worse flight performance than common target drones. The reason you see so many hitting their targets are:
- some are bound to make it through, the Russians have launched a couple thousand so far
- if Hohols waste expensive interceptors on Gerans (a PAC2/3 interceptor goes for ~4 million $, and they only produce a combined ~700 a year) they'd be completely out of AA by now. They have to reserve the more capable systems for higher priority threats.
- on top of that they have few western SAM systems in the first place, most of the country is unprotected

Gerans are not maneuvering targets, and the Phalanx is designed against supersonic AShMs or rockets, artillery and mortars in case of the Centurion C-RAM. A 10 second engagement time against a very slow far subsonic threat is ludicrous.

>Here is a C-RAM under optimal conditions engaging a single target (on camera) for 8 seconds [YouTube] C-RAM Responds To Missile >Attack On US Embassy In Baghdads Green Zone (embed)
Now assume it would be maneuvering as well and not fly in a straight line.
Those are not optimal engagement conditions. Optimal engagement conditions are the threat flying straight at the point defense system. High azimuth targets at the border of the effective engagement range are about as bad as it can get. We saw a Pantsir miss a relatively slow, unmaneuvering storm shadow under similar conditions for example.

The fibreglass body won't stand up to 20 mm HE, and heavy AShMs like the P-800 are armored to prevent CIWS from blowing up the warhead.

Those are PAC-2 containers. We know the majority of interceptors Hohols get are PAC-3s (and they're produced in higher numbers too, ~500 PAC-3 anually compared to ~200 PAC-2).
>But more on the Arleigh Burke, the most common missile is the SM-2 which has been used in Ukraine and launched by Buk TELs.
>These performed poorly.
The SM-2 will perform fine against threats that are significantly easier to hit than a target drone. On sea you have no vegetation and ground clutter to deal with either.

>In the case of the Daring class, currently it only has 48 VLS cells for SAMs, so 48 Gerans are enough for a saturation attack even assuming a 90% intercept rate and 1 missile per Geran.

>I would sure hope so, but it's difficult to say what fragmentation capacity a 20mm has.
I mean they can be seen exploding in the video (in fact find me a video of AAA firing where that doesn't happen). And it would be strange if they didn't have HE filler, I think 14,5mm caliber is the smallest where HE filler is practical.
>Seems like it is impact detonation, perhaps with a self destruct time.
Yeah the explosive radius would make timed detonation totally impractical, I think it's just so that they don't fall on anyone's head.

High azimuth targets at the border of the effective engagement range are about as bad as it can get. We saw a Pantsir miss a relatively slow, unmaneuvering storm shadow under similar conditions for example.
That was clearly the operator firing a missile when it wasn't inside the engagement envelope (he engaged it too late so the missile couldn't turn quickly enough, and for the follow up the Storm shadow had passed already).
>>473246388
>A 10 second engagement time against a very slow far subsonic threat is ludicrous.
Instead of just throwing mud, give a number and why you think it is realistic.
The vid I posted is imo a perfect target since it flies straight, shows its broad side (maximizes target area) and is close.
A ballistics computer would be able to give the exact guidance for the engagement, and it still took ~8 seconds and some 300-400 rounds out of 1100.

That average engagement time and engagement envelope will give the saturation limit.
Or we can use number of bursts for intercept, given that we know a typical burst is about 100 rounds.
And according to wiki, the Block 1A/B has a ammo capacity of 1550 rounds (not 1100).

So provide numbers, if possible based on real world examples.

Just as another example, they say that it can engage targets out to 3nm out (but given the dispersion and time it is unrealistic).
The Houthis fired a subsonic cruise missile that managed to get within 1 mile (nm?) from the ship.
Let's say it travelled about 264m/s and was engaged all the way (given that it was a single misisle and penetrated all air defense it probably was).
That means a single missile could fly straight towards a CIWS, within the engagement envelope, for at least 14 seconds.
And it is possible it was engaged by 2 CIWS.

So what is a realistic time to survive for a sunflower 200 when approaching a single CIWS?

Good point, though the body itself is built to be quite stiff and have good stress distribution, hence why they use delta wings for a sub-sonic prop drone.

>Instead of just throwing mud, give a number and why you think it is realistic.
>The vid I posted is imo a perfect target since it flies straight, shows its broad side (maximizes target area) and is close.
It should also be mentioned that a target that is flying [even partially] perpendicularly to the firing/targeting position may make it easier for the RADAR/computer to calculate the velocity and bearing of the target accurately.

>Does the Arleigh Burke use a modular system, where offensive armament can be exchanged for defensive armament?
The VLS cells can take Tomahawks, large anti air missiles or quad packed small missiles.
You never know what it carries.

>The SM-2 will perform fine against threats that are significantly easier to hit than a target drone.
Well, real life in Ukraine says otherwise.
>That assumes the CIWS can't deal with them, which is unlikely.
We have seen AAA over queef (and not only Kalashnikov based AAA) followed by lawnmover sounds and thermal powerplants or factories getting hit.
Shooting down Gerans is not impossible, in fact it does happen frequently, but it is not easy.

As mentioned before, I never say it is. Just that the engagement time, envelope and ammo capacity will make CIWS vulnerable to early saturation by Gerans (as in with relative few numbers).
You have provided 0 evidence showing otherwise.

In fact, I have demonstrated with 2 examples that my estimate of 10 seconds per engagement ought to be realistic where example 1 was 2 seconds shorter and engagement 2 was at least 4 seconds longer.

When it comes to electrically driven guns this is simply not one of the real weaknesses, you shouldn't look too enthusiastically for them. A high rate of fire is required to hit a fast moving target by rolling the dice many times, but a slow drone would probably only require a few shots, if not just a single shot from a tweaked and slightly modified system. Now, whether the system can handle hundreds of drones all at once is another story.

Perhaps, but during ww2 the experience was 20mm autocannons didn't have enough stopping power, even 30mm was found to be not entirely satisfactory. 37/40mm was preferred, especially when defending warships, where several direct hits in the last moment with smaller calibres did not guarantee to stop an incoming attack even if the plane was shot down. Doubly so when facing Kamikaze attacks.

>That was clearly the operator firing a missile when it wasn't inside the engagement envelope (he engaged it too late so the missile couldn't turn quickly enough, and for the follow up the Storm shadow had passed already).
And why was it barely in/outside the engagement envelope? Because it wasn't flying at the Pantsir but past it at range, making it significantly harder/impossible to hit. Same thing is happening in your video. The hit probability for all point defense systems trails off the further away the point of impact is from the system.
>Instead of just throwing mud, give a number and why you think it is realistic.
The FlakPz Gepard will fire a 20 round per gun burst (about two seconds) for "simple" targets. Stands to reason the Phalanx would take less for even simpler targets (very slow, large, going straight at it) since it has a signficiantly higher rate of fire.

>Well, real life in Ukraine says otherwise.
Ukraine is not the sea? What kind of stupid point is that? You can't engage targets you don't have line of sight to.
>We have seen AAA over queef (and not only Kalashnikov based AAA) followed by lawnmover sounds and thermal powerplants or factories getting hit.
>Shooting down Gerans is not impossible, in fact it does happen frequently, but it is not easy.
Again, the Russians are launching thousands of them. It's the entire point of those things. The main limiting factor for Hohols is that shooting down 10000$ Gerans with 4 million $ missiles that are in short supply anyways is not sustainable.
>You have provided 0 evidence showing otherwise.
You haven't shown any evidence either, you just pretend that a CIWS designed to deal with supersonic AShMs would somehow struggle with targets that are simpler to eliminate than the targeting drones in training exercises. You completely ignore that every country that put even a modicum of resources into AShMs since WW2 ended up with capable high performance missiles instead of a way cheaper swarm of slow drones. Nothing about the Sahed/Geran is new tech that has only become possible now.
