With how expensive the housing market has become in many states, why would a young person choose to spend $2,000 or more a month on rent in a big city if they ultimately plan to move out and buy a house somewhere else? I get that cities can offer higher salaries, better job prospects, and more chances to network, but are those advantages really as strong as they used to be now that remote work is somewhat common and the job market has shifted? Also all the crime and smelly niggers? Living in a city seems like it would be a really memorable experience. There’s always something going on, more people to meet, and a shit ton of places to eat, shop, or just explore. But if the plan is to eventually leave, settle down, and buy a house somewhere quieter, why spend years pouring all that money into rent just to walk away from it later? I don't get it.

The general sentiment I see on /pol/ is that owning a house is only going to get harder, the whole “you’ll own nothing and be happy” idea. So why would someone move to somewhere like NYC or Chciago? To eat restaurant food? Wear long coats? Jobs? That’s it? If you eventually want a family, aren’t you going to move out of the city anyway? I just don’t get it. If it was somewhat afforadable, I could totally understand it...

Because outside of healthcare (which is a scam) nearly all upper middle class jobs are in the city and require you to be in the office at least three days a week.
