why do people act like working for a FAANG is like being a nuclear physicist? You'll definitely have some roles requiring some intense or specialized education, but by and large these companies aren't building anything particularly ground breaking, or even efficient, and the grueling process of landing a job with them comes from the sheer number of competitive applicants. $1.5 million is a rounding error for a company the size of meta. There's reports of them paying $500k a year to engineers to simply NOT work elsewhere and do nothing all day. I work as software engineer for a fortune 50 company. We have some really smart H1bs, we also have some barely competent H1bs, just like home grown employees. The thing though, is that I'll always side with giving an advantage to my countrymen over foreign nationals who barely associate with me. If this means we lose out on a group of decently competent H1bs for less competent Americans, I'll take that trade-off, which is ultimately healthier for the long term. We will still brain drain anyone significantly brilliant enough to be worth it.
