I've never understood why parents force their children to learn instruments like piano or violin.Does learning music guarantee your child a good job? Will your child become a musician?Could your child become a nationally touring musical maestro? He probably won't even land a gig playing piano in a bar, struggling to afford food each month. What's the point of forcing a child to learn an instrument they dislike?
kids growing up learning an instrument have on average 15 more IQ points

>>517348527Music is proven to harmonize the hemispheres of the brain. As an added bonus, if they achieve anything near mastery over the instrument, they will be revered by higher social classes, making especially young women more likely to marry above their league.
They do it for the most part, because retarded parents think their kid is going to become some kind of a super pianist and the parents can then feel second hand glory about it.In reality the kid will likely grow to resent the instrument as the obsessive parents make them practice too much. They should only do it if they have a passion for it.
>>517348527The point is to keep your child busy and build a resume for college. Learning a second language is another thing a lot of parents push their kids into. When you’re white or Asian it’s not enough to just have the best grades in your school you have to do all these extracurricular activities to stand out.
>>517348799They do it because they think putting it on your college application helps you get into a more prestigious school. that's all they care about.
>>517348527Asian parents do it to compensate for their failures in life. Basically, if an Asian parent didn't get to become a doctor, musician, etc. they will force their kid to do it and live through their kid
>>517348901learning a second language is an extremely useful and practical thing.

Appreciation for music is part of a well rounded human being. Your question only shows that you have fallen for the industrialized education model, which holds that the only purpose of raising a child is to make them a better factory wagie so that Line Go Up. The mindset that everything in life should be credentialed and monetized is poison; reject it. Good music is timeless and thereby transmits cultural heritage; learning to make, or at least replicate, good music is participation in civilizational health.
>>517348527I wasn't forced but I learned two instruments when I was young and later a third. I love classical music and listen multiple times per week. You have no interest or understanding of these things, you shouldn't try and you shouldn't force your kids. It's not for you.

>>517348527the same reason you should get your kids to go to the gym.It builds into them the positive feedback loop and the important lesson that hard work pays off.The only way you will learn to play a piece of music, is by practicing. And you notice the improvement, yesterday you cuoldn't do it. Today you can.Same with going to the gym, last week you can do 7 pull ups, this week you can do 8.Trackable measureable improvement resulting from work = when you grow up you know to achieve anything you have to put in the hours. If you dont and just sit like a lazy bum on the internet all day then nothing good will happen, you end up like OP and other retarded 4channers. many such cases.

When you are younger your brain is more attuned to learning new skills and there is also less of a burden to be able to perform to a certain standard. Being able to play an instrument gives you something you can do for life with friends or on your own that brings joy and keeps you away from being another doomscroller prodding through life without anything meaningful to dedicate yourself on. It also teaches you early on that you have to work hard to achieve your goals, and that failing is ok, as long as you keep putting in the time and effort you can reach the goals you set for yourself.

My kids will be forced to play at least three instruments and they will never hear a single nigger song in their life.
>>517348527Beings with souls are naturally drawn to it, sorry you have to be forced. I loved playing music as a kid. It's not supposed to put food on the table or make money and trying to turn it into something profitable ruins the whole point. On top of the natural rhythm side of it, there is a calculated logic involved in hitting the right keys on the piano or strings on a guitar and that is extremely good for your brain. Plus its a creative outlet so you don't end up make terrible threads like this one or OC like picrel.
>>517348527College applicationsLearning that consistent practice makes people good at something. Getting used to dedicating an hour uninterrupted to learn something. >>517348527If your kid ever wants to take music serious, they are at such an advantage if they started young. Its like a language, and learning it at that age makes it so they are essentially "native fluent" in music. Ignore all the crap like>>517348585that talks about, "Oh, it has this and that benefit for your baby's IQ/development/hand-eye coordination" and other such excuses. Yes, those benefits are proven, but the trend of people "forcing" their children to learn instruments is purely masturbatory. These parents often-which is to say, USUALLY-don't even play that instrument themselves, so you and I both know that all the ostensible benefits are something they saw in a news article or parenting magazine. It's in the same vein as the tiger mom crap: Dumbass parents with unfairly high expectations trying to beat their dumbass kids into aping something they saw high-IQ kids doing. They want to have kids that reflect well on themselves so they can feel a vicarious sense of accomplishment when Little Timmy or Sally becomes a super-smart A+ kid like the kid on the 7 AM news.If you play an instrument, or sing, or collect jazz records or some shit, or are otherwise similarly inclined to a genuine appreciation of music, then obviously you can scratch what I said. Passing that down is masturbatory for different reasons. But the whole, "YOU LEARN VIOLIN/PIANO NAO" thing from parents, in the United States at least, is mostly done for the reason of wanting one's kid to reflect well on one's self.
>>517351612Wrong
>>517348527teaching discipline. the idea that learning something takes time and starts off pretty slow but also leads to results builds confidence as they are good at somethingopens pathways in learning. music has its own specific rules that generalize into learning in general >>517349027i mean none of this works if you just skip the learning part and tell people they are good at it
>>517354310Have you attended a musical school or understand roughly how those institutions operate?
>>517351612It *is* useful, but it's not accomplished through Soccer Mom Karen spazzing the fuck out over her child's piano lessons that she put into their after-school time like it was fucking cram school.Actual, ensouled human beings do not need to be rapped across the knuckles with a ruler to give a shit about music. They do not need to be made to play Au Claire de la Lune or Hot Cross Buns ad infinitum while a pissed-off mom blows a blood vessel. They will have moments, like when the musical score in a movie or game REALLY moves them for the first time, or when they buy their first album as a teenager and blast that shit on repeat, or when they're just singing some dumb drunken song with their friends and for a brief instant they can actually *feel* the harmony of their voices resonating in their chest, that will make them think, "Wow, music is really worth it!" It will happen organically. The key is in SUPPORTING it when that happens, and developing that spark, not in mandating the spark's existence to begin with.
>>517348585If his iq was higher he’d learn something more useful like modern music. Ain’t no one going to a piano concert. Kid is better off singing and rapping.Like who here plays the recorder like back in fourth grade>>517348814Ain’t will replace them .
>>517351612these are kids we're talking about. the results of music learning and art learning in general can be slow but are apparent in their execution (if its actually being taught and that learning is rewarded, and not something they can escape where it doesn't matter if its just them playing mindlessly)kids are pretty bad at seeing the forest beyond the trees, underlining the value learning something has. so if you only focus on teaching them hard academics with the idea that "it needs to be useful" it'll crush their spirit, they'll question anything that seemed not useful until they discount it all as useless in their rebellious phase music is also something they can perform, so its an easy thing for them to use to make friendsi guess you can teach them to be good at sports too
>>517348527Every kid I’ve known who was “forced” to learn an instrument was a high achiever.
>>517354650>Like who here plays the recorder like back in fourth gradeIf you don't have a core memory of this shit then I don't wanna talk
>>517354650The recorder is a beautiful instrument, I wish I had kept it up. I'm planning to re-learn it alongside my kids.
>>517348527it's a good thing but it shouldn't be forced
Also, I just want to throw this out there: The reason that music is traditionally included in a classical education isn't because it makes you more well-rounded. It's included for the same reasons that astronomy and geometry are included. An understanding, or even an intuitive sense, of harmony and interval, leads one to understanding the nature of the universe better. This isn't just fluff, either. Think about it: Even the colors of light given off by an element burning are determined by the interval between where electrons were and where they end up, with those colors of light being given off as frequencies determined by that particular interval being crossed. Everything that exists materially in a universe of duality exists as the interval between two or more things. Understanding that really is important, and being exposed to music does help accomplish such an understanding. But I promise you that Tiger Mom Karen freaking out over Little Timmy's piano lessons is not concerned with such things. She is aping something she doesn't get. She just wants Little Timmy to be impressive at his recital.

>>517356777Music classes in grade school aren't about overall brain stimulation, but training basic life skills. Fine motor skill control, breath control, coordination, creative/critical thinking, etc in a non-competitive environment that also doesn't encourage hyperfocus are crucial for overall development. Had I stuck with music instead of gaming, I'd have also at least had a marketable skill instead of being the guy in his mid 30s crushing children in online Pokemon battles saying I've still got it
>>517348527As a musician who started later on, I wish my parents had me taught lessons early in life. It would have saved me a lot of trouble.
It's just part of a proper upbringing. Same with time outdoors, other creative outlets like drawing, educational toys, and practical skills in how to make and fix things. If they take to something thats great and if not that's fine too but at least get them the basics. Helicopter moms, weird asian parents in a status competition with each other, and burnouts who want to live vicariously through their kids who all demand it and force their kids to continue year after year are different but just sharing with your kid and building a musical household where families can sing and play and collaborate with each other is a healthier household and makes for good childhood memories. >>517348527It's one of the few things that studies show will improve cognitive ability.Learning an instrument is a traditional avenue for the upper class; like any skill it's something to fall back on if you fail elsewhere. Being proficient musically actually opens you up to a whole industry, not just that of musician, since learning theory and notation go along with learning an instrument. >>517348886Yea, no one believes it, which is why high functioning upper and upper-middle class parents all make their kids learn an instrument. RETARD.
Not a single kid in the ghetto I grew up in took music lessons. No one could afford it. Couldn’t afford Boy Scout uniforms, brand name clothes, the latest electronic toys. All that shit was for the middle class and higher. The parents do it as a way of signaling to other parents that they too are part of their social class. Sending their kids to after school private tutoring, same thing. So what? I was top of my class in school, BTFO of those other tutored kids on the SAT and otherwise, excelled at tennis, and later taught myself guitar and bass. A rich parent can send their kids to piano lessons, but their kid will remain a dumbass.
/pol/ praises composers like Bach but suddenly a child playing a piano is bad?The child will play classical music that will benefit their brain growth.I know you would rather throw an ipad to your kid and blast nigger music but some of us are actually white.
>>517348527It develops him into more than a labor drone, thus increasing the likelihood of ending up better than a labor drone.
>>517353262> what china's rejuvenation looks like btw
>>517348859Actually this. Before the age of five the human brain is very elastic and can readily learn languages, and if developed mathematics. The neural pathways needed to learn an instrument are similar to math, so kids that learn music tend to also do better at math. But once the brain loses its elasticity after early childhood so learning languages or math becomes much harder later in life. Rich parents know this so try to foster healthy brain development in their children. So far the chemicals needed to allow the brain to readily learn language, music, etc as an adult have not been identified; but cannabinoids show promise
>>517348527They do it because it gives them the impression of belonging to the upper classes. You could do it with upper class type of sportball or any other activity the parents force on their kids to be "achievers". The actual content of the "achievement" is secondary. No one becomes more intelligent from performing music, its something you do if you like it.

An uncultured swine like you either doesn't have kids or has no idea how to raise kids. Children need structure and discipline and routine to stay on the straight and narrow path. It's also hard to match the brain development in a child that is learning to play an instrument, read music or a new language.
Kids are pretty stupid honestly, may as well force them to do something interesting. Even if they don't keep playing the instrument later in life, I think they'll look back on the time fondly. Most of the things I did in my childhood were pointless, but at least playing an instrument feels like some sort of an accomplishment

Rockbands are for burnouts who started learning when they were already like 15 and too old to ever be great so they rely on instruments that are easy to play because of frets and long scale lengths and use distortion to hide the fact that their technique is shit. The fact that the majority of famous rock bands can barely play their own songs live is an indictment of the entire genre. They "end up" as 70iq hasbeens because that's all they ever were, if they were any greater they wouldn't have ended up in a buttrock band.

Playing music is a basic human skill anon. If you cant sing or play anything, thats like not knowing how to cook steak or shoot a gun. Like cooking and long range combat, music is something that is universal to all people while separating us from the rest of the natural world. You dont have to make it your whole life and passion (and shouldnt) but you really are missing out on the human experience if you dont play or sing, like a cuck listening in the corner while their favorite artist fucks music into life.

>>517348527Language skills and muscle memory are best established at a young age before the brain and body really form routine habits. Assuming your kid is interested, it's unironically the best time for them to learn music or another language. The problem is that these sort of talents in western society were largely an middle-upper class thing as historically those children had the free time to do so. Now it's more of a hobby thing, but foreign big people ram their kids through anything extracurricular not as a way to assimilate but as a way to one-up the natives. You can see this with pajeet spelling bees where for the average white family spelling bees are a fun side gig thing your kids do if they have an active interest where pajeets have appeared and made their kids and the whole environment super try hard to the point nobody white cares anymore. And the children will just grow to resent both their parents and the society that will never truly accept them.
>>517379771>>517385222That's certainly a part of it, but there is evidence that musical training at a young age influences how the brain develops (in a positive way). Kind of similar to how reading at a young age also is one of the few known hacks to making your kid smarter.

if any anon is reading this, force yourself to learn an instrument right nowdont even do an hour a day, just 15 minutes, anyone can do thata lot of people get good at sight reading but thats more like being a musical robot, you need to practice enough to "break through" and your brain will be capable of improvisations and solos. when your muscle memory is just barely good enough, find a backing track and attempt to solo in that key, all instruments can do it
>>517348527I don't believe in forcing them, but I'd definitely encourage it. It's good for their brain development and it's a lovely skill to have. Especially in this era of retardation and apathy
>>517348527>Does learning music guarantee your child a good job?No, but it certainly doesn't prevent you from getting a job.>Will your child become a musician?>Could your child become a nationally touring musical maestro? Some of them will, yes. Most great musicians started their training very early.
>>517348527Whenever you read about history's greatest composers like Kenji Ito or Nobuo Uematsu, it seems like they were drawn to the piano themselves rather than having it forced on them.
>>517348527Learning an instrument, in conjunction with musical theory restructures the brain to be much more in tune with mathematical patterns and really patterns in general, same as learning multiple languages. Both my kids go to music school and learn 2 languages other than Russian. And no, it's not to show them off as my pet projects to other upper middle class Muscovites, It's literally for their brain development. I can already see they are both miles ahead of me at their age in intelligence and understanding, and they don't even hate it all that much because my wife also went to music school, so she can explain all the arcane tonal shifting incantations and forbidden knowledge that may as well be cuneiform to me.For my part, I converse in English and Czech with them before they even entered middle school. Just did math olympics round with my son too. It feels good to raise non-retards.
>>517348527teaching them hand eye coordination and rhythm, two important skills. also, being good at an instrument is a huge bonus in the dating market
>>517348527So they can grow up and get featured into a facial abuse video for 100 USD.
>>517348527Good to get kids in the habit of having at least one high skill hobby. Doesn't have to be an instrument, could be learning ancient Greek, an instrument is just generally easier to measure their progress.
>>517348527I play the guitar. It gets me baddie hoes

>>517385886I feel your pain. Mom was an artist too and never taught me shit about art. ADHD cunt was too busy leeching off my hard-working dad, chasing half-a-dozen career paths that never panned out, and treating me like either a handbag to be dragged everywhere or a trophy to show off.Though she did teach me how to write well, I'll say that much for her.
>>517348585Kids with high iq tend to wear fancy clothes, clearly the silk made them smart
>>517390130your kids don't know shitmastery takes years of focus which they will not even get closeyou are deluding yourself or have very low standards
>>517348527most parents are sick in the head and want to force their children to do anything the child hates. This often leads to them having failed jobs and careers that the parents pushed them into.
>>517348527No, but it helps you develop finger-dexterity, actually helps you be better at learning sequential information and pattern recognition. It also grants you a social edge.
>>517351434All of my kids appreciate that I forced them to take piano lessons as children. It was the dividing line between them growing up with very little money and growing up in poverty. We didn't have much money, but we did not live in poverty. They didn't get $200 tennis shoes, they got piano lessons instead. It took them well into adulthood to realize that their friends who got $200 tennis shoes or sparkly trinkets were not the lucky ones.
>>517354112You seem to be very fond of masturbation.
>>517354798That's because it teaches many things. But, the most important thing is, there has to be a parent willing to take the time to "force" the kid to take lessons and "force" practice.People whose parents invest time like that usually end up with successful children.
>>517360261Learn the ukulele. There's hundreds of vids on YT.It's very easy and will teach you the basics if you want to move on to bass or guitar or other stringed instruments.A tenor uke is just a small, 4 stringed guitar.
>>517348527Because it's a nice skill to have. My parents never let me learn an instrument and I was a complete retard in music class in school. I was even afraid of it sometimes because I would get bad grades. My kids learned the paino and played as long as they wanted too. Only recently they quit. But they're pretty good at it.
>>517348527Nirvana super fag Dave Grohl never had any formally musical training/can't read music and fucker can play the guitar, drums, on elite level.
>>517390130music theory is kind of funny in that the most complex sounding terms are in reality the most basic of concepts. I could say some shit that sounds smart like “oh yeah bro the German augmented sixth is enharmonic to the tritone substitution of the secondary dominant” but when it comes down it we are really just discussing a common cadence of a bVI chord leading to the usual V, just borrowing a little from the parallel minor scale (or specifically Mixolydian b6 if someone wants to be all WELL AKSHUALLY about it)
Your kid learning an instrument can be useful, but please do it in a social manner and not in a competitive one. Also try to pick an instrument that gets you pussy.>t. Piano virgin who had to spent half of his youth in private classical piano lessons and competitions

>>517396672Who are you Steve Martin? The faggiest instrument possible. At least fat ass John Popper got pussy with his harmonica.
It was probably the one thing that I really hated my parents for. I really wanted to play the violin at 6. But my parents just told me "violin was too hard and I would just give up" or "violin is for fags, real men play the guitar" (dad is a blue collar hillbilly) or "you are too young to learn that". They couldn't even be bothered to do basic research into it that most violinists start at 6.Finally got lessons as an adult at 33 and I'm actually pretty good at it. Been doing Celtic Fiddle and Classical. It's good to learn a high skill hobby at a young age and if you are associated with a music school they often have seasonal concerts that are nice social events to network with other quality people. I often think I would have had better luck socially if I had been involved in the music community at a younger age. Dad just wanted to shoot animals and gut fish tho so that took priority for the family. My son wants to take piano lessons so I'm enrolling him in those in a couple months.
>>517378966>Niggers would just break in and steal it anyway.Niggers won't steal a piano. That takes actual effort.

>>517397932Learning to play uke makes it much easier to learn to play the banjo.
>>517398098>social events to network with other quality peopleThis is an important thing, as well. Also gives confidence, as performing in front of an audience can help in many other aspects of life.

>>517401547I see, it's Guitar Hero with a piano. I was like 20 hours in Guitar Hero and I figured out I shoudl buy a guitar and play that instead of a toy. I'm not even close to good, of course, but the longer the time goes, the better I get, and more time I have to play the guitar instead of wageslave to pay the bills, because I have a proper profession that pays well without slaving. nor woman and children to raise. I can only go up from here, you should start now so you can go up too.
