Every single decade has a teen angst movement against everything that came before as an act of rebellion. Artists can more easily be molded into whatever the studio wants to sell. They're also easier to market and idolize, especially in the age of individualism. Grunge was simply the last genre of band music before they discovered this. If you don't count boy bands, but that was more of a transition into single artist idolization. Every guy had their spice girl and every girl had their backstreet boy.

This. Lollapalooza and Ozzfest kicked off a carnival tour of Gen X depression. Woodstock 99 was about the perfect punctuation to them being told to be sad and having nothing to rebel against except their own stupid insecurities. By the end of the 80s, cheap sound machines created a music industry filled with cash grab acts releasing songs laden with bad canned effects, all trying to be the next Michael Jackson or Van Halen. Grunge was a return to the simple 4 man instrument band with post punk lyrics. It was a breath of badly needed fresh air. Grunge lost popularity because digital processing through the computer has become so sophisticated and no longer sounds like ear rape. It is still easier to pay a competent sound engineer than it is to find 4 competent instrument players with a decent vocal frontman

My answer to the second part of the question about why it became less popular. Probably a multitude of factors, the rise of rap music and the popularity of various other new genres of metal. Like 3 of the 4 biggest grunge singers are dead etc literally just Eddie Vedder left

Judeo American (self) subversion.
Pre-50s swing Jazz was a truly American form that can stand next to Classical music. Yes it was very black too. It was a positive music. Andrews Sisters, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald etc. Ella was a true artist.
Bebop, Cool Jazz (lmao) and similar deviations were an abomination.
Rock was mostly the decline of American culture but of course there were exceptions. Creedence are OK for example. Free is retarded.
80s pop was not serious music but it's palatable and entertaining so it gets a pass.
Early forms of blues/ragtime and country are excellent forms of folk music, before ca WW2, later it all gradually went to shit.
ZZ Top are underrated because of their radio hits. There's more to it than that.
Heavy metal is music for teenagers but a good music for teenagers. Grunge was absolute shit. Eddie Vedder was a whiny bitch, nobody cares about his problems and Nirvana is a turd.
A lot of people seem to think that American music started with Elvis but Elvis was, in fact, the last one. It ended with him.
British Invasion was a joke. The Beatless are half shit, Zeppelin is "laughter does anybody remember laughter (proceeds to moan like a female porn actress for five minutes followed by a shit solo)", Stones are meh and I bet you don't even know who's the fourth one but it was the most genuine part of it.
British Invasion killed Surf Rock which might have been the next great American music but you threw it away for some Jew slop, kudos.

It was a reaction to how bland and commercialized rock and roll had become - men dressing up like women and basically singing hip hop tier lyrics. It also tapped into feelings of ennui and listlessness that mainstream music was not exploiting. The crisis was not material but rather nihilism and coping with the physically safe but psychologically dangerous modern world.

It basically devolved into Indie rock so it still exists. There is only so much you can do with a few chords and a fuzz box.

One of my good friends really likes 'backpack rap', Mac Miller and Underachievers and such. He took too many mushrooms and was entirely immersed in that music for about 4 months til he snapped out of it. Now he goes through phases of sending or posting songs and saying how weird it was, but like you said it was a musical comfort blanket to cope with the horrors of his drug nightmare.

>Led Zeppelin was great.
I'll never understand that and I listen to music from Classical to Swing to Metal to Italian pop to Peruvian, Greek and Chinese traditional.
I tried listening to LZ and there's just nothing there.
Deep Purple and Black Sabbath with Ozzy >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Zeppelin
My theory is that they sold some mysticism via their album covers and doing weird shit on stage (female moans, shitty solos but with a violin bow, stuff like that) so they became a fad and then people started saying their songs were great but other than Stairway all their songs are half shit. The guy with literally one great solo is somehow considered top 5 guitarists of all time, that's just not reasonable.

It's considered the greatest shoegaze album of all time. It didn't make mainstream radio no, but it was everywhere on alt radio/college radio back in the day.

Grunge is stinky. I hate how it's such a big part of London Ontario's culture and I can still see stinky grunge enjoyers walking around dressed like it's still 1996

The used to print spells on the outside of the vinyl so when you spun the record it would spin some fuckin sorcery shit around. They were weird af, the Boleskine house, the origin of Jimmy Page's "found" guitar.. There's a sick war mode on them.

And if that's what you're into, I'll give it to you. I have have some deep appreciation for some way off axis niche music that's hard for other people to appreciate as well, Black flag or whatever is not my style but I can appreciate that there are legitimate fans of the music and that the scene itself was a wild time.

Soundgarden is definitely a real one, of course their hits a little too much radio airplay but there were good album tracks there as well and musically they had great depth. Temple of the Dog is more listenable than Pearl jam in my opinion, great musically and lyrically
>>
>>526317911
They have a ton of great songs. If you only judge them off their radio shit then you're missing out. I can't listen to any of their radio songs. Jimmy Page wrote some of the greatest guitar riffs of all time. This is undeniable.

Life was hard for young people and depressing. It was only comfy for the boomers, half of their children committed suicide, so there's definitively an issue behind it.
Having lived through it, I felt the same way, but I'm having trouble pinpointing exactly what was wrong because life appeared great.
I'll guess trauma combined with an overwhelming feeling that everything is fake and gay. And being constantly gas-lighted about fundamental truths

Father of mine
Tell me where have you been
Yeah, I just closed my eyes
And the world disappeared
Father of mine
Tell me how do you sleep
With the children you abandoned
And the wife I saw you beat
I will never be safe
I will never be sane
I will always be weird inside
I will always be lame
Now I'm a grown man
With a child of my own
And I swear I'm not going to let her know
All the pain I have known

>off axis niche music that's hard for other people to appreciate
BF in a nutshell. Especially as the band grew into the albums past My War where some of the tracks were anti Hardcore and like Anti music in general. Their whole thing was being aggressive AT their audience not FOR their audience, which I feel was such a flash in the pan for a music scene. Like thinking logically, bands like BF, FEAR, Flipper and Gang Green were there purely to infuriate people sometimes and that is something that just does not exist today, let alone should ever have made sense for a band to further their success... but it sorta worked. The whole SST story is kinda a beautiful trainwreck, which is why I started listening to Rollins speak about that experience and the industry in the first place.

Im gonna throw out some of the all female grunge bands too. Like L7 and The Scratch. Nobody ever talks about them but they were influential at the time. To me grundge is like a melting of punk, metal, pop and rock. It sort of eclectic in nature. Drawing on evolution from all those previous phases. Maybe not as technical as them. Early/Late punk might have been the biggest influencer for many of these people.
>>
>>526317911
Nah LZ had musical chops and a sense of theatricality in composition that mattered and influenced a whole lot of bands that came after
It's also quite a bit overblown and overplayed on rock radio so I understand people not being able to lean in to appreciate the better parts of their efforts
>>
>>526318692
L7 and PJ Harvey

>>526318322

I never really respected them too much, they had a unique sound and the radio songs had those raw personal lyrics that were hard to listen to when you're in a good mood. But this song is about perfect and made me retroactively have better appreciation for their approach.
>>
>>526318692
Whenever I hear L7 I think of that move with Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis when they were a psycho killer couple.

>>526318058
Holy crap, so it's worse than I thought.
>Occult Runout Etchings: On the master discs for Led Zeppelin III, Jimmy Page had the engineer Terry Manning hand-etch the primary dictums of occultist Aleister Crowley into the "dead wax" (runout groove). When the record spins at 33 1/3 RPM, these inscriptions literally rotate around the center label:
>Side One: "Do What Thou Wilt".
>Side Two: "So Mote It Be".
>Thelemic Philosophy: The phrase "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law" is the central tenet of Crowley's philosophical system, Thelema. "So mote it be" is an ancient phrase commonly used in Freemasonry and Wiccan rituals, often to conclude a spell or prayer.
It's similar with The Beatles, half of their fandom is conspiracies, secret meanings of album art, love triangles, tragic death bla bla.

Wouldnt have todays metal bands without grunge. They transformed metal. It had taken a turn toward commercialization. Metal bands started to emulate them. With darker sounds, more muzzled tones really expanding on 80's metal into something entirly different.

>shitty music
>beloved by all
Back then, because it was widely promoted.
Now, because it's nostalgic.
The power of controlling media.

PS: "Classic" music is music. Everything else is a reduction of music, NOT music itself. Like a jingle in a commercial isn't actual music. That's all modern music is, a commercial jingle trying to sell you something, whether it's self-loathing apathy, flannel t-shirts, criminality, baggy pants, rhinestone jean jackets, atheism, nihilism, being an emotional neurotic faggot, and so forth. It's all FAKE and GAY.
