Not available. “Call me back when it is available” and basically committed to a delayed entry. 6 months later they call me out of nowhere telling me to report to MEPS for a physical, plan to ship out the next day to boot camp in Lackland AFB, Texas. 10 weeks of basic, another 10 months in Colorado at the PMEL training center. My specialty was calibration/repair of diagnostic equipment. Pretty much req’d I work in a very stable environment; basically guaranteed I wasn’t going to be working under some aircraft in the middle of a rainstorm or facing down the enemy 500yds away. More valuable in a stable environment so pretty much spent Desert Storm in West Germany and Japan.Not every job requires you are in mortal danger in fear of being shot or blown up. You could easily be performing your service from Anywhere USA far from any action. There are so many jobs that have equivalent to civilian employment that are far from harms way.Decent pay, travel, education, experience, on the job training, etc. I did a ten year gig, regretted not completing the other ten later in life.
