SHE'S 18 AND SHE JUST INVENTED A FILTER THAT REMOVES 96% OF MICROPLASTICS.
Mia Heller was 18 years old when she invented a water filtration system that removes 95.5% of microplastics from drinking water. She built it in her garage in Warrenton, Virginia.
The inspiration came from her own home. A few years ago, Heller learned that the local water in her area was contaminated with PFAS and microplastics. Her family installed a filtration system, but watching her mother constantly replace expensive filter membranes made her think there had to be a better way.
She started working on a prototype in early 2025. By summer, she had a working model.
Her system uses ferrofluid, a magnetic liquid, to capture microplastic particles as water flows through a three part system. A magnetic field then pulls the contaminants out, and the ferrofluid gets recovered and reused in a closed loop. The device is about the size of a bag of flour and could fit under a kitchen sink.

How is a magnetic fluid pulling micro plastics from the water? Plastic isn't magnetic last time I checked. The only way this could work is if there was other magnetic particles that pull micro plastics with them.

The fluid is ferrous, so it reacts to magnets. It isn't the magnet that is pulling out the microplastics, it is the metal sludge mixing with the plastics. Then you hit it with magnets which pulls out all the sludge and some microplastics from the water.

The question isn't whether or not you can filter the water. We have filters that are at the sub-micron level. The problem is those filters are expensive and to scale it to the size of the microplastics problem would be infeasible. Are her filters cheap and able to process large amounts of water, tens of thousands of gallons an hour?
>>
>>532520399
>Now tell me how this technology isn't that novel, unscalable, and there's actually a man behind it

Oh, anon, you're such a fucking misognic shitlo--

>Irish teenager Fionn Ferreira developed and popularized essentially the same approach in 2018–2019. He won the Google Science Fair with ~87% removal rates after over 1,000 tests and has continued refining it, including prototypes for home or pipe integration. Media coverage has directly compared the two as "both of these kids" using the same fundamental magnetic-separation method, with Heller adding a closed-loop recycling twist.
>Science fair kits, Science Buddies projects, and lab studies have demonstrated ferrofluid microplastic removal for years (e.g., varying ferrofluid amounts to test efficiency on spiked water samples). Recent papers have explored palm-oil or other carrier liquids for even higher lab removal rates (>99% in synthetic conditions).
>The physics is straightforward and well-known: microplastics are often hydrophobic, ferrofluid binds to them, and magnetism allows easy extraction without membranes. It's a clever application of existing nanotechnology/magnetism principles, not a breakthrough invention.
>Ferrofluid loss and cost: Even with recycling, ~13% is lost per cycle. Over time, this adds up. Ferrofluid (especially food-safe or properly stabilized versions) is expensive to produce at scale. Heller herself has noted this limitation and positioned her device primarily for individual home/under-sink use rather than municipal treatment. Scaling to continuous flow for a whole house or city water supply would require massive quantities and further engineering that hasn't been demonstrated.

charcoal and sand filters do this for 1/10th the cost and 1/5th of the space

inbe4 useing fero fuilid ala heat exchanget configuration somehow pulls non magnetic plastic out of the water

a RO filter is the only working filter on earth worth its salt

i hope this is a revolution in filter technologys but remember Sand filters were used in roman times

sand filters are used today

capillary based filters like R.E and boil filters *like in desalination plants* have all been used since roman times we have not had a real advancement in filture technology for thousands of years

sand filters filter 99% of everything its the same with every filter

the.1% is where its not good because R.O filters shit like large viruses not just backteria but still cannot filter things like tritiom

again i really hope this is a revolution but i have a horrible feeling that this isnt anything close to the hype would be extreemly happy to be wrong

cant find a patent aparently she just mixes the fluid directly into the water lmao then uses a magnet to pull it back out and drag it through filter pads

kind of inasane because it just calls it a "filterpad" witch really begs the question why not just put a filter pad into the water pipe like a standard inline water filter

it also says ferofluid is expencive and cannot be used at a large scale

id really love to see a schematic or even a synopsis its all just bait articles

Sand filters are highly effective at removing microplastics from water by trapping the particles within the small spaces between sand grains. As water flows through the filter bed, the physical structure of the sand acts as a multi-layered sieve that catches even very small plastic fragments.

This process can remove up to ninety-nine percent of microplastics in some wastewater treatment applications. However, sand filters can become clogged over time and require backwashing to clear the trapped debris.

While effective, they are typically used as a final polishing step rather than a primary method for large-scale plastic removal.

aparently sand is still better but i hope she continues maybe im misreading the micro part

It does not, which is why its an issue. We have yet to find a proper filtration method to remove all microplastics but up to 93-96% depending on different methods, her method is known and being used already for years but since most of microplastics is not from tap water at least in developed countries its quite a nothing burger. But good on her for managing to use known science to make a filter, its not difficult though.

from what i can gather this new teenager added a closed loop system for the ferrofluid that would seemingly dramatically reduce the cost of the filter. the new girl's innovation makes the process potentially scalable for a home or municipal system. of course, such an innovation would have been added years ago if any institution or corporation actually cared about protecting people from toxins in the drinking water, but they don't - quite the opposite.

>>
>>532534958
i have to speculate but i'd guess that this new ferrofluid filter doesn't replace anything, rather is another layer for the water to travel through that removes some remaining nano/micro sediment. it would not reduce cost for a standard setup - but how much cost would it add seems to be the question. i don't know how much ferrofluid costs (or what it is, or how long it lasts)

plastic binds to the fluid then gets filterd with a magnet anon above posted it

they are essentially "magnetizeing" the particles of water

the idea of mixing shit into the water to purify it is well known

kek what we need are plastic eating nanites with a ferofluid blob in them so we can rip them out of the water

I'm pretty sure it does. The ferrofluid consists of iron particles surrounded by some oily surfactant. You mix this with the polluted water, where microplastics are repulsed by the water and attracted by the oily surfactant. This binds the plastic to the ferrofluid. Then you use a magnet to pull the ferrofluid out of the water, which is left purified.

Seems like something you dont want to ingest a lot of. Kinda similar to fluoride being a literal neurotoxin yet they put it in drinking water/toothpaste then they wonder why everybodys so retarded kek

>>532527177
>Yeah, 95% of microplastics have a diameter greater than 25um. A cheap coffee drip filter from a convenience store filters at a 15um level.

Correct on both counts. This chick discovered an expensive and impractical way to get results that are slightly better than a normal paper or screen filter, and doesn't come close to touching the 8um or smaller particles that pose the biggest risk because they're small enough to be absorbed into human tissue and we currently have no way to filter them out.

i looked it up and ferrofluid causes respiratory issues if consumed and is a flammable liquid - i doubt that it ever touches the water.

There is nothing in this statement that takes away from her achievement. It sounds like she made an improvement in an existing system and is aware of the limitations and cost. People like her need to be funded if for no other reason she is white irish. You people are a bunch of sour grapes. Not every new thing is novel and a massive breakthrough and there is nothing wrong with recreating existing systems on a smaller hobby scale to prove they even work. How many companies are LYING to you about the procedures and science behind how their products work many times to the health detriment of the customer.

so the solution to getting microplastic pollution out of the water is to dump flammable harmful chemicals into the water. of course it is.

Why? Isn't it essentially just metal shavings suspended in a viscous fluid? Is grinding steal into a powder really that expensive?
