if you win the lottery, you're better off taking the lump sum and the hit, and then putting the bulk of your winnings in a diversified investment portfoliothat will outperform the tax breaks you get by taking instalments. by a great deal by taking installments, the bulk of your money you're waiting for the government to pay out for you will not be making money for you. it just sits there, getting ate away by inflation, and not earning interestyour portfolio will be something like 500m in cash loltake the lump sum and the hit, then put that money in investments. over a life time, the inflation hit you'd take would be staggering especially given how inflation is picking up.I'm pretty sure, just based on inflation alone, you'd do better just holding the lump sum of cash that you lose half to taxesif you take the lump sum, sure, your money gets cut in half at the start, but it'll swing back in 10 years, and in 10+ years you'll have more money than you started with. think of the taxes like riding a correction in the stock market to the bottom. it'll get back up there eventually.
