I think its a bit late to be asking if anything in this war is "justified".Beyond the truly bad parts of it, that can never be justified. No one should ever justify a war like this. It's pretty fucked that so many dead young men doesn't phase either side. Men who could have ended up knowing each other, or working together. A true brother war, despite all the vitriol you hear now, after the fact.

Some Ukrainians were pro-EU and some Ukrainians were pro-Russia. But Russia then took advantage of that situation to try to take parts of Ukraine for themselves, regardless of whether secession is what parts of Ukraine really wanted.
