It's the fire that seems to have been ignited and spreading as a response.It's no surprise that a tribal game has been dominated by tribal players who draw cries of "Racism" from the more sensitive types. It's also no surprise that those cries are accompanied by calls to shut them down with demands for stricter censorship and moderation which many feel has ruined multiplayer platforms. Everybody has come to expect the nosering brigade who has wormed their way into top gaming companies to react as they have since the days of Gamergate.This time, something is different. The immediate censorship has affected players with no affiliation to Olympus. This has many expressing their frustration with how the game is being policed. Somehow even reddit is turning on nanny mod culture as they see the same patterns repeating. People who are more agnostic toward or who generally veer away from edgy gamer racism are finding themselves on the same side of the battlefield as those who have worn out the keys of the gamer word on their keyboards. These formerly passive players are even spearheading the opposition to nanny mods.They are flat out saying they would rather have the personal responsibility of ignoring gamers than have a minority dictate to them what username they can choose and which words they can type. Some are canceling subscriptions. Their frustration is not aimed at Olympus. Instead they are turning eyes level and straight toward Blizzard.So there are three groups in this developing situation:On one hand you have a guild of gamers being gamers and not really giving a fuck.Then you have a knee jerk reaction from a company that got too comfy with current year + 11 of cancel culture.
Then you have what is presumably the majority of players who are sick of getting banned for innocuous names. The latter here is the one where momentum is building. A guild of 30,000 might seem large. It can raise nostalgia of your grandfather's days of raiding Habbo Hotel. But that is nothing but a candle in the face of the raging wildfire that is now spreading and probably already too late to contain. It's not just a game. We have seen these same policies of deplatforming applied nearly ubiquitously and we have seen the backlash to these policies become snowball into real political support. This is no different, but the fast and furious intolerance being expressed toward these policies suggest that a new wave of otherwise passive observers have been activated to move against these blue hair committees. This is something that won't be quarantined to gaming. It will go with them to the polls. We are about to see a new era of politics and culture.
