linux boots fast and is much better than windows 95 (except maybe for familiarity)on the right hardware it may be sub-3s and people tweaked it to be faster than that of course but even without chasing boot times it's quite fast

>>544295136>takes less than a second for me to start libreoffice on linuxamen, brother
Everyone saying it was slower than this is wrong. This is 86box, it emulates the entire computer. That's the point that differentiates it from a regular virtual machine. It doesn't run anything faster than the hardware you are emulating, period. I encourage you all to try it. Get your iso's from winworld and the archive. The reason you think that it was slower back then is because waiting on a computer to load anything was still a new experience. You've been conditioned to wait on your computer to load for 30 years since then, no matter how fast it got you always have to wait on it. Along the way it got even slower than it used to be, but you're used to it and back then you weren't. To top it off you were also a lot younger, makes things feel slower even still. Windows 95 also felt sluggish compared to dos machines that came before it.
>>544292875Not sure if OP is a boomer retard or a zoomer retardIf you're old enough to have used Windows 95 you know how limited those programs areIf you're young enough to not have used them, you would know that you get similar speeds with a proper NVMe SSDOP's probably just a timeless retard

>>544301593>If you're old enough to have used Windows 95 you know how limited those programs areWindows 95 as an OS did 95% of the things that actually matter that windows 11 can do. The hardware was limited but the code was actually efficient. Today it's all spaghetti code bloat.

>>544292875can't it be redone? not with vibe coding but is there anyone on earth capable of copying old tech with new techniques?some guy is selling an iPod breadboard so you can connect to Bluetooth and stuff.shouldn't revisiting old tech be simple? what's stopping someone from creating a bootleg windows 95 but that works with modern tech? no bloat or spyware. right before you get murdered you'd be a hero because that's obviously what everyone wants.so why not
>>544304850Just run the old software, what's so tough about that?
>>544304850Building a kernel and user space programs is a monumental task that can't really be done by a single person (there are some exceptional people like Terry Davis, but that's like one in a generation). Other thing is tech debt, ie. most programs are made for either Windows or Linux. Then there are proprietary drivers
that was slow as shit boi

>>544304981It more likely that AI is faking decompiling while actually having access to source code interesting what software they picked to reverse engineer
>>544304888as someone still stuck on wangblows 7 for various reasons running old software is fine if you don't want to connect to the internet. most modern websites flat out won't work if you try to open them with netscape navigator and half of them will break anyway even with a modern, but non-jewgled browser like pale moon. jewgle uses their cronies at cloudflare to exclude non-chrome or chrome-like browsers from the internet, and they made it so you need a modern os to use chrome.

>>544292875There used to be a setting you could change to speed up loading, because Windows had a built-in default display time for the logo. Like 30 sec or something, I don't remember. I want to say you had to add something to the autoconfig.bat, but this was so long ago, I don't remember anymore.I still run Win 7, some of my software is like 20 years old. It still works fine for all of my daily purposes, just I wouldn't be able to play the fancier games of now. I probably need to think about what to do when my computer finally really kicks the can. It's already on like its third hard drive and second or third fan.

this is absolutely false, i used to walk away from the computer and get a comfy glass of milk and come back to the win 95 or 98 or xp screen still booting, shit took at least 2-5 mins to fully boot including after explorer.exe launched to the point where word was able to launch with the type of hardware people were running commonly back then.
>>544292875I only ever see tinker trannies seething about this. We have 2026 maybe you should have upgraded your 4GB ram stick a long time ago. I have win 11 and deleted all the AI nonsense and it works great, I have 16gb ram currently and with gaming it never goes above that no matter what I play. What I do think is bad is that win 11 feels like it's just a new layer of win put over an old windows. They should start from scratch instead of putting more and more shit on top of the old.If Linux wasn't so retarded and had actual support then I would change too but where even start? There are trillion different versions and everyone says a different one is the right one. Why can't they make a user friendly distro for once where everything just works and can be used for normal users who barely know anything about PCs?They usually just say 'works on my PC' and for basic functions you should just ask AI or reddit. And then they wonder why no one wants to use Linux and all people continue to use windows instead

you also have to consider that Windows 95 was loading on mechanical hard drives at time so going back and discovering the load times are so quick on modern solid state drives is not actually that impressive
>>544308138there is sometimes a little tinkering, but once you've got it working it works, so it's not endlesssome games you simply can't play, some games run smoother and faster, some games have a linux native versionmost things I've tried just run with no effortyou can check compatibility on:https://www.protondb.com/it would be a lie to say there aren't drawbacks, and there is tinkering, but the point is that Linux actually puts you in control of your own machine moreso than a corporate OS does, especially with things like NixOS where you're essentially speccing out your own custom operating system, so there's nothing you don't want, and absolutely everything is to your taste - you can even set up your spec ('flake') to recognise which of your computers it's on, customising what gets installed / updated based on thatdeclarative, automated, reproducible, and European - it feels like the futureI would highly recommend at least dabbling with it on one of your machines>Playing games became easier they said when you play over steam but what about all the cracked games? They surely won't work so easy if at all right?you can use the exact same Steam Runtime Tools and Steam Linux Runtime in a standalone mode with things like 'umu-launcher'and you've also got 'Lutris' which is very much like Steam but for non-Steam games, and has simple installers for even obscure things like the PC port of Perfect Darksome people prefer 'Bottles' because it offers more control, but doesn't have a 'library' feel AFAIKyou just add what you want to your flake like this:programs.steam.enable = true;environment.systemPackages = with pkgs; [ umu-launcher lutris bottles pcsx2 dolphin];update, and it's magically on your system with a restarttry it - it's free!
>>544309066>update, and it's magically on your system with a restartsorry, that's *without* a restartyou can rebuild a large portion of your operating system live and switch over instantly
>>544292875That is booting on modern hardware still. 95 took a couple of minutes to boot back then at the best. Most people would start it and go do other things. As a kid I would boot it when I got home from school. By time I had shoes and socks off, backpack put up and had talked with parents about my day and got back then it almost was done booting. But my parents would keep getting bloatware on it. I would open IE and it would have 10 toolbars. Then my vidya was always blamed for slowing the computer down.My current desktop can boot in 7 seconds. Half of that is bios time. If your current computer is slow just jewgle disabling hibernate and disabling fast boot. You normies probably are doubling your boot time with those.

Most tests Linux gives lower fps than current win 11 so what's the real selling point if you don't give a shit that you can't configure your entire OS? My new PC is a few months old and everything worked from the start no bug or failure whatsoever. While with Linux there's is always something to do first or problems coming up many times from what the Linux users write online.

>>544309552if you do just want a premasticated experience where you get what you're given, you don't care that something you paid a lot of money for isn't really under your control, and you're unbothered by the American man standing in your office taking notes on you and selling your data, then there's probably not anything of importance to you, to be honestbut personally I don't like being technologically-infantilised to the point that I'm trapped in a corporate walled garden and made into digital chattel, so changing a line in a config to get a game working isn't particularly daunting to me, thus there's not really an argument to not use NixOS, when most things do work of the box, and I get all the other benefits as well
>>544292875Bullshit. A 486 took like 5 min to boot. It was about a minute to POST. I was there, retard. You'd turn on the pc and go make coffee or tea while you waited. My current PC boots to windows in about 30 seconds.

>>544310296286 and 386 booted faster, but that was on windows 1 and 2. 3.1 and 95 were also still dos programs so they took a long time to load. >>544292875Windows 7 was peak baseline operating system efficiency. I mean it allowed the user to refine the process of computing the way they wanted to and gave them the largest amount of freedom and creativity. Everything beyond has been disaster after disaster because they have moved so far away from efficiency that they don't even pretend to conceal the bloat anymore. They just expect you to buy a 5 thousand dollar graphics card and 20 thousand dollars of ram in order to achieve high performance. Win 11 has hundreds of processes and executables running in the background, ai probing and sensors, facial scans, voice recording, all built directly into default systems like the ones for opening Word and notepad.
All you>Muh it took ages to bootmade me make a video of my Win98 machine booting. This is on a spinning mechanical HDD. See the responsiveness? Show me how long it takes on your Ryzen 3120980XXL Trillion Core machine with tens of zetabytes of RAM to open the device manager
>>544312584>Windows 7 was peak baseline operating system efficiency. It's true. My Win7 desktop PC has literally 30 processes running at idle>checks task manager204 fucking processes right now in win11. Sigh, if only you could find people who still made laptops that run win7
>>544298298have they made a modern-AI-powered Clippy yet?
>>544312773Everybody absolutely despised Clippy back when he was a thing so it would be shitty marketing. Also no one actually has MS Office anymore, it's basically strictly a corporate product now like Flight Simulator used to be before they sold it as a video game.
>>544312692You could easily monitor what was going on within your os with win 7. Their trojans were easy to defend against, now it's impossible. Which of the hundreds of processes is being used to do things I don't want it to. What's even worse is they made it so it's not even under our control, it's constantly pinging routers and ips connected to Microsoft (located someplace in India or south Asia) I've accepted it, we've no way to regain control of anything and the future society will be built inefficiency, scams, and cons to trick people bad is good, forever. Like a nightmare.
>>544296673Yes! And now the C64U is out. No reason not to C64 maxx.
>>544312913I totally agree. Love win7. I'm on a laptop though rn. Still have the win7 desktop. It's just hard asf to find software that runs in Win7. I absolutely love win7. Peak OS imo. I clung to winXP 64bit for years past its expiration date kek
>>544292875>be me>actual info technologist>laugh at all the laymen in this thread>do a 360 and leave
>>544312166>I used to go make coffee while my computer was booting up and get back and it was still booting.fuckin samei barely remember it thoit was worth it....the internet and the people were so much betterwish i kept in touch with more of the people...only a few left
>>544310955early 2000's mazak 410 and QT200.
>>544312425No, not just servers. In software dev, the only reason to use Windows is if developing native Windows apps and vidya, which are massive markets of course. But Windows sucks horrifically for everything else. That's why 1/3 of Windows developers end up using WSL.
>>544301230jews have an AI monopoly, anon is jewish
>>544313252>In software dev, the only reason to use Windows is if developing native Windows apps and vidyaThe market is actually moving to Azure rather than windows. But most companies still use windows for their laptops due to office 365 and teams. It is what it is. Could be worse. Try using apple for a bit. I'm not sure about linux but apple is complete garbage in every way. I had to google how to do basic shit in their stupid ide Xcode and even trying to do basic operating system stuff like going up a level isn't simple. It really made me appreciate winblows
Someone out there using AI as we speak to make a really good OS
>>544313252If I were to develop anything I would do it in a Windows 7 environment or as close to that as I could. It's the only OS you can still get a good base line reading with. You'll never achieve anything anywhere near it with Linux, it's highly inefficient and extremely tedious nonsense. If it were any kind of app I would use c# for the framework, if I had to use 3d environment it would be an older iteration of Unity or Unreal that had cross platform working using Win 7. AI enhanced older applications look as good if not better than somethings of today and are WORLDs apart in terms of performance yet the performance costs and needs seem to keep getting exponentially worse, they've gone and transcended comically inefficient.
>>544313386>apple is complete garbageElaborate? I love how MacOS doesn't bug you with notifications, update bullshit and whatnot and just werksAlso i love to have my HW and SW from the same vendor and Apple is the only one left who does this.
>>544313536>Someone out there using AI as we speak to make a really good OSAI isn't actually AI. It's a large language model and it can only copy off work people already did. So you'll end up with some OS someone already created. Most likely a copy of NT
>>544294300Hello Saaaaaar
>>544313575>ElaborateHave you ever tried to use their IDE XCode? It fucking sucks in every way compared with Visual Studio. You also can't even see the file tree within your own OS. I had to constantly google how to do things that are intuitive in Winblows. It was like a nightmare that never ended. I was getting paid the whole time though
>>544292875Systemd-analyze says that my pc boots in ~50 seconds, I have tried caldera openlinux 3.1 in 86box and it booted faster than that. I don't know about microshaft, though.
>>544294300>t. nvidia CEOCitizens have lost their land, water and eletricity because the government wants to build a data center in every city. The only ones who benefit are overpayed greedy tech CEOs.
>>544313665>XCodeNah i code in VI(M)>file treeTerminal -> tree?I give you that it's confusing at the beginning when you're so used to winblows, but as soon as you get it it's great. Takes a while
>>544313802>you have to use the terminal to see the file pathkek
>>544313825If you are white you always prefer the terminal >Terry_Davis_about_when_computers_went_wrong.webm
>>544313825Aside from TerryYou said file tree not file path. If you make the right settings in finder your file path will be displayed with the full pathJust don't be a retard
>>544302903Windows XP, fixed that for ya
>>544313872Oh I get that you CAN use the terminal to see the file path. In winblows it's just literally right there in the explorer and always has been. Everything is ridiculously stupid in mac. Like it was designed for a child or something. And as far as not using XCode like you said... that's their IDE for coding apps bro, and it fucking sucks. You can't hover over objects to see values all the time. You can't right click to rename a file. Everything about apple sucks compared with Visual Studio. It's a slick OS but I absolutely hated it. I had a job working on apple app and it was a nightmare that never ended.
>>544301725>also this vid is bs because pcs never loaded that fast ever.of course they did? my own desktop pc was probably even faster as long as the filesystem check (incorrect shutdown or w/e) didn't triggeras for your windows 11 still being "fast" whatever that means in your perception the problem is that on most computers i've seen in the wild it doesn't nearly stay that way.
>>544313902>bro just google how to see the file pathlmao, my point exactly, and it's nonstop that over and over>let me google how to do something that is naturally done in windows>over, and over, and over
>>544313585>it can only copy off work people already didincorrect. it can do work no one ever did (leaning on previously learned concepts of course, but humans do that too).
>>544313536Best AI can do i bootleg copy of existing onesSame like they did with Adobe stuffThat doesnt work just looks like adobe crapRewriting OS in same way could be legit hardware level dangerous
>>544314053You are right that the file structure is more logical displayed in the Explorer, i also miss the tree view. But one can live with it and with the right settings you may google once you get a great system.I have regular uptimes of 200 days and more
>>544314073>building your OS based on outdated stackoverflow posts>you ask it a question and it sources from some old version of a post that's no longer relevant>you ask it the same question twice and get two completely different answerskek
>>544314073>incorrect. it can do work no one ever did Proof of it?
>>544313585You're an uninspired creator who cant guide AI to produce what you want. AI is a like a super genius 5 year old, if you dont hold its hand and be stupid specific, it will not produce what you want. Directors like Spielberg basically do the same thing, no? Use hundreds of other people who all gained their skills and talents through other people and means (Like how AI gathers everything) and then uses all of their knowledge with his creativity to make movies. We are living in the Directors era, and if you can only produce uninspired slop, thats because you lack creativity. AI has access to all the OS ever made, once can pull all the best things from all those OS and make something new. Look at all the people using AI to emulate PS5, and now even doing more things on top of it. Blah, blah, blah conclusion. If your AI pumps out slop, its because you're a creativity void of a human.
>>544301355>This is showing a pentium mmx 166mhz with 32mb of ram.N-word, I actually owned such a pc. It did not boot windows 95, nor 98(se) that fast. It took forever and then some.
>>544314120If some rando decides to make an OS and bricks his computer then thats on them, but I assure you no one who doesnt even have a lick of knowledge about OS is going to run to their AI and start a massive OS project, the only people who will do that are probably people who can nearly build an OS themselves
>>544313992little things speed up efficiency, the placement of the start menu for example. They moved it at one point because if they could attract the users eyes to the center of the screen it made them more susceptible to ads, so they began ads in the startmenu process, which btw is now a core part of the trojan operating system that every major ad company such as Google pretty much has direct access to with telemetry services. If you can disable parts of this system you free up gb's of ram. In Windows 11 they autoactivate it after an automated program pings Microsoft and sends back a result, and there's no way to stop it because it's part of the core system now. They did an update they switched up the way images are displayed in the folder, it now takes me an extra 5 minutes to do something it took me fractions of a second to do before.
>>544314143you can build it on reasoning about your own design and your understanding of programming languages in general, so can aiperhaps parts of your understanding came from stackoverflow too, sure. no one cares as long as it works.>>544314170old scientific problems that were solved by AIabout 100 billion images that were never done before (you can take an AI that was made before the Iran war and it gives you iran war parodies or it makes clothes that never existed)almost any fucking code you generate. if you want you can probably get a browser game where a duck shits pepe the frog faces and you catch them, this has not existed before
>>544314321>it now takes me an extra 5 minutes to do something it took me fractions of a second to do before.Yeah they need to screenshot everything and send it to MS/NSA/CIA
