For context it's worth noting that this was a dog and pony show from the beginning. The intent behind these unenforceable fines and legal proceedings was to set precedent for forcing UK ISPs to comply with governmental requests to filter and block wrongthink websites.The idea was that they, Ofcom, would publicly ask a website which they knew would never comply to toe the line to the UK's own new internet moral guidelines and then when 4chan declined (within their rights) Ofcom and the UK government could then make the case that they need legal powers to compel UK ISPs to block websites at the government's request. At the moment UK ISPs really do not want to filter websites. I mean they have family filters like child locks and shit like that but if you're a grown man living on your own you can turn all that off and very little of the internet is filtered at the ISP level. They only filter what the law compels them to (DMCA stuff is a good example, a lot of piracy shit is filtered at the ISP level, again by law).The point of this 4chan 'case' is that the government can say they tried asking non-UK websites to pay £10 gorillion in fines or comply and the websites told them to fuck off so now they need legal powers to compel ISPs to do their bidding at the net rung down on the ladder of UK network infrastructure. Please do not think that anyone in the UK ever thought that this would end differently. This is the intended outcome. This whole thing from start to finish has been dotting i's and crossing t's so that new draconian laws can be put in place.
