Opportunity, freedom and power lies West of the Mississippi. Gold and land are in abundance - along with competition. The chance to strike out and make it big. More so if you are Kindred or Cainite. Even with the establishment of the west coast, and the transcontinental railroad linking New York to San Francisco, large swathes of territories-turned-states are still blank on the map. Cities are contested, and outside of towns is no man's land. The Sabbat have been losing territory since the Mexican-American War. The Camarilla, led first by Anarchs, are making inroads, and the independent clans are trickling in. The Jyhad is anyone’s game out here, and it's mostly neonates and fledgling playing.

The American Civil War has been over for five years. Many people headed west, and Kindred followed. Along with technology advancing, record keeping was on the rise. You had to have your identity written down, even if it was your false identity. The way you were taking the train, though, didn't require identification. As far as the mortals knew, you were just a special-made coffin. That's why it weighed so much, they reckon.

But who was this coming down on an iron horse?
>Raphael Two-Saints. Up from Montréal way. The immigration officer couldn't spell your family name of Toussaint, so you settled with “Two-Saints.” Skirmishes with the Native tribes saw your sire granting you the Embrace.
>Sybil Proctor. From an esteemed plantation family, you left the stifling South behind. A combination of your pedigree and strong sense of self caught your sire’s attention.
>Write-In. Include name and something that made them stand out to their sire.

Normally I would've gone for Brujah or Assamite instead of Gangrel (them being budget werewolves and all) but they kind of fit the theme of the "wild" west.

The American Southwest was part of the Mexican Northwest just a score of years ago. The Mexican-American War had bisected Mexico, and when the Camarilla and Anarchs moseyed on over, they turned over the rocks hiding the Lasombra. The Anarchs truly dislodged the Sabbat from California, but as they are wont to do, the Camarilla come in when most of the work is done and declare their “hard work” is done. There are still holdouts, of course. The Lasombra were mighty entwined with the Mexican population, your sire once said.

Los Angeles, once a quaint bay for ranchers, is now the capital of the Anarchs. You knew from your ally, in the coffin next to you, said the Camarilla had a firm grip on San Francisco and the surrounding environments. You and your partner had poured over the map one excited evening, having gotten your tickets and secured coffins. To be out from under the boots of these Elders of the East Coast… It was almost too good to be true. You discussed into the wee hours where to go, pouring over a map of the West.

You both came to an agreement. First by train, then by carriage, if that’s what it took. If the kine could brave the Oregon Trail without any vampiric powers, you could challenge the wilds too, if need be.

What kind of domain would you like to settle in?

>Rural budding community - Truly out on the trails, far from any towns. You’re the only licks in town and far from Kindred competition. You hold praxis.
(Examples include the California Alps and Redwood Forest, Death Valley in California, Pike’s Peak, Yellowstone, and the isolated Rocky Mountains.)
>Satellite Settlement - Near a major city but far enough away to have your own domain, and have Kindred neighbors. Or perhaps a large settlement with no Kindred having taken it yet. You would have praxis over the domain.
(Salt Lake City, Portland, Tombstone, Comstock Lode, Boise, Seattle)
>Rubbing Shoulders in the City - Enter a Cam or Anarch city where another already holds praxis. Work your way up. The Anarchs are, after all, a subsect within the Camarilla…
(Examples are San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Albuquerque)

As for your Kindred Companion… Which clan do they belong to?

>Followers of Set (Obfuscate, Presence, Serpentis)

What's the point of being a gangrel anarch cowboy if you're not going all out on manifest destiny pioneer bullshit. City Gangrel are bottom of the barrel trash feeders barely above Nosferatu in station. The open wilderness is where we belong, our strengths are literally tailor made for this.

Setite sorcery is surprisingly potent, especially in the Old West, which is basically a desert.

Not happy about being an anarch, but sects are all the same anyway at the hire levels.

Let's try and build our own little town and cult. Faith is fuel.
>>
QM what generation are we? Probably higher than the main gameline due to it being an earlier time?
>>
>>6457538
It depends. In v20, we would likely be 11th, 10th to 9th gen, as this is taking place in the 1800s. Even during the Dark Ages, the 1400s to 1600s, most Cainites were at the lowest 8th gen. Keeping in mind that your attributes can go higher than 5 permanently is at 9th gen and you don't unlock elder disciplines till 7th. But given that Gangrel won, which means we can do aggravated damage with very little investment in protean.

I humbly offer a playlist of Wild West music, that fits the feel I’m going for more than historical accuracy. Ambient blowing wind and cowboy yodelling on the prairie would be an amusing thought.

Get those old bones outta that box,” you hear as you rouse from daysleep. The lid to your coffin slowly opens and the face of your comrade greets you. The urge to go out and explore rises with your need for blood. The Gangrel blood calling to you. The deeply tanned man grins at you, wearing a fine but travel-worthy jacket over his priestly garb. “We’re done riding that iron horse, Raphael.”

“Thank Christ on the Cross and Caine on the Roads,” you spoke, pulling yourself out of your prone position and out of the coffin. “I was tiring of that enclosed space.”

“Aye, and too few pickings to boot,” your Setite friend says, watching as you stretch your undead body in the train’s cargo car. “It was hard feeding, but better than staking ourselves and bleeding someone dry in a fit when we woke.” A murder on a moving train would be a hard thing to cover up. You think it’d make a great penny dreadful or some hogwash, an investigator looking into train murders while the train was moving. You shake the thought.

“Where are we, Esteban?” You ask your companion.

He sticks up a ringed finger and wags it in the air. “Tut tut, Raphael. All in due time,” he pulls a cloth covering the chest of your belongings. You smile, walking up to it. You fling it open. Your sets of clothes, hunting knives, a water skin for looks, and your guns. Your poncho you put on immediately, strapping on your boots and gun holsters. The revolvers sat on your hips, and your rifle stayed in the chest. No need for that now. Your felt-hat crowned your skull, while Esteban was fond of his wide brim Spanish hat. Said it fit his Catholic priest outfit better - anything to cover that bald head of his when outdoors, you reckon. It was the same kind of hat that the Spanish Inquisition once wore, just not red. It was close enough to make the Elders bristle, and for that alone, Esteban liked it.

You look around the cargo car. “Mary and Anne outside?”

Esteban nods. “Fed, hitched up, and awaiting.”

You slowly dragged your hands over your face. Friction between dead flesh. Fingers that could turn into claws. Lips hiding fangs that fed on blood. You found yourself in awe of how normal it all felt to you, now. A decade of getting the ropes of Kindred life. The back of your throat felt parched. But it wasn’t your glands feeling the need for water. Blood. Without a word, you stepped out into the night, hefting your chest with both hands. “Where are we, Esteban?”

Before you heard his answer, you had a fairly good idea. The smell of the salt air from the sea filled your nose, but it had a hint of something else. Pine, cypress? You were familiar with the fragrance of trees in Canada and the northern U.S., but this was new to you. “Crescent City, by the Pacific and the Redwood Forest.”

The cargo car was pulled up to the train station, the passenger car having long been emptied. No conductor or other workers were on the wooden platform, something you guessed that Esteban ensured. You look down the tracks, seeing the slight rise into the foothills to the east. Below you, to the west, lay Crescent City and its port jutting into the Pacific. Despite its name, it was more like a town. But to the south was what took your breath away, if you still had the need to breathe. The Redwood looms like giants in loose formation, coming to bear down on the earth below. It cast a shadow upon everything, a colossus looking down and watching every soul for miles around.

“Christ,” you say, staring up at them. “Gargantuan. Have you ever seen a thing like that?”

“God is always confounding and amazing us,” Esteban speaks with a knowing look.

You chuckle and grin. “Getting into character, are we?”

“But of course, my child! Speaking of…” He motions to the horses hitched up by the station entry. You show surprise when they are tied to a carriage, recognizing a few chests inside as Esteban’s.

”A little grandiose, don’t you think?” You ask, scratching the back of your head.

“Not with all my possessions. The good folk of Crescent City haven’t seen a Spanish man of cloth in years, and I must prepare my flock. Even as I come in under cover of night, I must still look like I have value.”

“Funny,” you wipe your chin, hefting your chest of items into the carriage. “If you were anything but Catholic, your worldly items wouldn’t be such a big deal.” You both chuckle as you get seated, Esteban taking the reins of the horses.

Trotting down the dirt path, the carriage bumps over every pebble. You try to stay stable on the bench as best you can. “We will be staying in the Saint Joseph Church, for the time being. Until you find something a bit more accommodating. I know you’re not one for religious sites,” the priest adjusts the spectacles on his face as the horses trot. “You’ll always be welcome. I wish to make the Church my haven, for obvious reasons. The basement is secure… But flooding does happen out here on the coast.”

You knew drowning wasn’t an issue for your kind, but it sure would be a kick in the head to wake up from daysleep with your haven underwater. “I reckon the church workers will be the folks you bleed with regularity?”
>>
>>6458155
Esteban nods. “I wish to make them my herd, aye. They will be my agents to bring more blood to me and convince more to come to the church.” You see him smirk, staring out into the distance. A look you’ve seen before when he’s thinking about the plans he’s brewed.

When you arrive at the church, you are greeted by a few men, also wearing the garb of Catholic priests. They speak Spanish and Esteban speaks to them in their tongue, directing them. You and your comrade go down to observe the communal haven. Truly, it was a storage room basement. With long chests to hold your bodies, you'd look just like any other part of the room. Still, being here under the altars and pews, made the top of your head itch. The many steeples of Montréal always set you on edge, and any holy place worshipping the Christ made you cagey.

“I'm sure you're rarin’ to go,” Esteban says, entering the basement. “I'll be here for a while yet. Go and explore our new city.”

You always enjoyed scouting - in the wilderness or the city. You walk through the dark dirt streets of Crescent City, deciding where to go first.

So every supernatural, with the exception of vampires, needs magic to fuel their powers. Cainites don't drink blood; rather, they absorb the magic in the blood. Mages, kueijin, some wraiths, fae, daemons, changing breeds, they all need magic, but they all have different names for it, as well as places where magic is abundant. Most commonly, it is found in places of metaphysical meaning or primordial nature. All that is to say the reason werewolves are so protective of nature is that they guard those magic places and need those magic places to make their magic work. The redwood forests are likely home to multiple packs of garou who would sooner die than let some random gangrel near. Being gangrel merely means that our clan founder may or may not have been raised or birthed by werewolves and that some garou may have had a conversation rather than instant murder you because you can speak with animals and have fortitude so you don't ash from a strike or two like most other cainites would. Because garou claws do aggravated damage at base and most Cainites don't have fortitude, you cant soak aggravated damage with stamina, and since all Cainites and mortals have only 7 health levels, that means you can get torpored in one maybe two hits. Now a gangrel with five dots of fortitude? They get to soak agg damage and spend blood for auto successes when soaking agg with fortitude, except sunlight and fire.

Have you ever wondered how Zapathasura the antidiluvian of the Ravnos survived multiple garou packs, legendary kuijin, and several shots from technocrat sun lasers from space? It's because Ravnos have fortitude, and Zapathasura was a master of it.
>>
>>6458215
Hypothetically speaking, a Cainite with enough courage and high enough fortitude could walk in the sun. A Cainite takes 3 aggravated damage each round they are in direct sunlight; a round is 6 seconds, and if you were rolling 7 or 8 fortitude dice each round without the need ot spend blood and can keep getting three successes at dc 8 then you will take no damage and could stay there for extended periods of time provided they dont fear frenzy and have enough blood in their system.

Yeah but city Gangrel are basically dirty hobos that nobody likes.
>>
Gangrel elders are weird. Most gangrel die or become corrupted before becoming elders. Those who make it to elder status find isolated places to sleep through the centuries and avoid the politics of the Cainite kind. Elder gangrels have founded the path of Lilith, hunt garou for sport, worship Kupala, join secret societies that puppet the puppeteers, or become warlords.

Most gangrel don't care for people or the weak and live with nature, partly because of their blood and because vampire politics get you killed.
>>
>>6459049
To be frank, most don't care for the Gangrel because they tend to neglect their social stats and all the perks that come from that, like status, resources, appearance, boon debt, etc... it's like you have a group that refuses to play by the rules. If granrels had something that other cainites wanted or valued, they would be more welcome.
