I'm currently developing my own imageboard. What do you think the ultimate board should be like?

>This is an imageboard, videos shouldn't be allowed
I think this is an antiquated and baseless claim. Having less features hardly makes a service better. I guess what I'm making is a "media board" where you can post pictures, videos, and music. Naturally you have user accounts, so you don't need to fill out millions of captchas and you can create your own sub boards and enjoy a ton of other features as well.
>ree you cant do that
What bothers me about imageboard culture is that the restrictions don't stem from practical reasons but from the fact that these features weren't technologically possible in 2004 when 4chan was coded.
You seem to hold 4chan's source code in high regard, but it is the way it is only because of what was possible 20 years ago.

The sad part is that the posting experience could be so much more fun but 4channers are afraid of change. I've seen people screech over the most minute changes to this website, like everyone here had autism or something.
It seems that you dont want "peak design", you want whatever you had when you were a child.
I'm sorry but there's no part of 4chan that is "peak". Not the features, not the CSS.

What is this random word pickign meme?

4chan user logic:

>thinks solving hundreds of CAPTCHA's every single day for decades is better than making one user account

>thinks they're "protected" and fully anonymous if they dont need to make a burner account like Nignog69 which would totally reveal their identity

>is so autistically stuck in nostalgia and refusal to change that defends broken 4chan source code from 2008. would probably frame it on their wall as the holy grail of programming.

>says that peak web design is whatever 4chan did in 2008. for instance, because 4chan couldn't support video files, 4chan shouldn't support them now

>thinks rounded corners in web elements are bad because 4chan didn't have that in 2008

>would screech and tantrum if 4chan improved its broken imgboard.php file even slightly
>>
Block posts from Israel. This isn't a joke. A consistent trend across -chan style imageboards is that they get spammed with kiddy porn and more than one has found that blocking posts from Israel drastically cuts down on it.
>>
how do you implement user accounts? whats to just stop bad actors from spam creating a billion ones and posting as usual?
>>82345377
honestly just rangeban most shithole countries, you dont need pakis and indians visiting your site

Do me a favor? Overmoderate the living fuck out of it. Go full turboreddit. Implement stringent rules and permaban people without clear reason on top of that. Quality threads ONLY. No exceptions. You need to be a fascist dictator. Free speech was a mistake.

>thinks solving hundreds of CAPTCHA's every single day for decades is better than making one user account
unironically yes. required accounts don't actually stop bots and spam, just look at what Twitter has turned into. this website has managed just fine without them. and what makes you think they wouldn't implement captchas anyway, even if you DO make an account? accounts don't actually help.
>thinks they're "protected" and fully anonymous if they dont need to make a burner account like Nignog69 which would totally reveal their identity
unironically yes. the less information collected, the better.
>is so autistically stuck in nostalgia
it's not about nostalgia.
>and refusal to change that defends broken 4chan source code from 2008.
2014.
newer =/= better. please fuck off back to the Apple support forums.
>would probably frame it on their wall as the holy grail of programming.
this is unironically one of the best developed sites on the internet. fite me.
>says that peak web design is whatever 4chan did in 2008.
no, 2014 was pretty good too. :^)
>for instance, because 4chan couldn't support video files, 4chan shouldn't support them now
nobody says that.
>thinks rounded corners in web elements are bad because 4chan didn't have that in 2008
rounded corners are bad because they introduce unnecessary padding and waste space. they create visual bloat with no justification other than some silicon-valley bs about how sharp edges are not common in nature and software should mimic the laws of nature. it's impractical and retarded.
>would screech and tantrum if 4chan improved its broken imgboard.php file even slightly
you can fuck off back to Twitter or Facebook or reddit or tumblr if you think newer is always so much better. There are many many options out there for you.
>>
>>82347420
>Quality threads ONLY. No exceptions. You need to be a fascist dictator. Free speech was a mistake.

I unironically think this way.
Most anons want absolute freedom, but I dont want to read retarded crap
>>
>>82347474
>this website has managed just fine without them
That's debatable. Last hack was like three months ago.
>the less information collected, the better.
You couldn't be more wrong. 4chan is a commercial website, meaning it will absolutely collect as much information about you as possible.
There are FOSS sites that implement user accounts. You're a low IQ moron if you think user accounts is the measuring stick for privacy.
>newer =/= better. please fuck off back to the Apple support forums.
Don't tell your better to fuck off. I'm a web developer + FOSS supporter. You're on a capitalist social media site watching ads 24/7.
>this is unironically one of the best developed sites on the internet. fite me.
Give me any arguments for this. I've written my own software and it's better. 4chan's source code leaked and it's the worst spaghetti I've seen.
>nobody says that.
You m00t fanboys always say retarded shit like that.
>rounded corners are bad
Sure whatever, I bet a ton of shit you use has rounded corners. Let me guess, you use Discord instead of IRC, right? You fuckers have no consistency.
>it's impractical and retarded.
4chan implements a lot of impractical solutions that you simply refuse to see because this is your biased, nearly religious standard for what's good.
Luckily this era of web development will die off.
>you can fuck off back to Twitter or Facebook or reddit or tumblr if you think newer is always so much better. There are many many options out there for you.
Once again, I'm against capitalist social media, which 4chan is part of. 4chan just pretends to be different because it's obsolete and the old code somehow has fooled a ton of 40-year-old virgins into thinking this is an alternative culture. If a site isn't FOSS, it's crap. Is 4chan FOSS?
>>
>>82347474
Do you have any arguments for why older would be better?
What's your OS? What phone do you use? What computer parts do you use?
Surely you never update any of your software, right?
Windows XP all the way, right?
>>
>>82345289
its the same faggot
>>
Imagine being a fanboy for a capitalist website that only cares about making money when there are free open source imageboards out there

>rreee but they dont have the same userbase I wanna be on 4chan mommy I wannaaaa rreeee reee
You sound like a child. You're just addicted and trying to rationalize it. You're no better than little girls who use Tiktok
>>
>>82348229
>That's debatable. Last hack was like three months ago.
and how would accounts have stopped that?
>You couldn't be more wrong. 4chan is a commercial website, meaning it will absolutely collect as much information about you as possible.
and yet it doesn't collect that much information at all, proving the practice isn't really as necessary as (((you))) seem to think it is.
>There are FOSS sites that implement user accounts.
I don't care. they're simply not necessary for something like an imageboard.
>You're a low IQ moron if you think user accounts is the measuring stick for privacy.
that's not quite what I said though, is it. you exhibit a real problem with reading comprehension
>Don't tell your better to fuck off. I'm a web developer + FOSS supporter.
lmao.
"I'm a WeB dEvElOpEr, kiddo. you better know who you're fucking with"
like...lmao
>You're on a capitalist social media site watching ads 24/7.
only half of that statement is true :^)
>Give me any arguments for this.
1.) it works well.
2.) it works efficiently.
3.) it's virtually free of bloat.
>I've written my own software and it's better.
no it isn't.
>4chan's source code leaked and it's the worst spaghetti I've seen.
given your reading comprehension, it appears a skill issue.
>You m00t fanboys always say retarded shit like that.
literally untrue though.
>Sure whatever, I bet a ton of shit you use has rounded corners.
doesn't mean I love it. it just means I put up with it. it's still bad though.
>Let me guess, you use Discord instead of IRC, right?
correct. see former.

>>82348368 (cont)
>4chan implements a lot of impractical solutions that you simply refuse to see because this is your biased, nearly religious standard for what's good.
not really. pretty much everything about the way this website works is highly practical. I like it for a reason. you seem to think I'm a fanatic without much reason.
>Luckily this era of web development will die off.
help the process! please go somewhere else and talk shit about how terrible 4chan is from over there.
>Once again, I'm against capitalist social media,
could've fooled me.
>which 4chan is part of.
real stretch of a statement there.
>4chan just pretends to be different
if 4chan is no different from the rest of the web, virtually everything else you've said about it is negated.
>because it's obsolete
not quite yet.
>and the old code somehow has fooled a ton of 40-year-old virgins into thinking this is an alternative culture.
so far your arguments have been
- 4chan sucks actually
- it's like, super old
- trust me, I do computers so I know
- oh yeah btw 4chan sucks if I didn't say that already
>If a site isn't FOSS, it's crap. Is 4chan FOSS?
4chan is a good website for the previously aforementioned reasons. I don't care about your arbitrary standards.

>>82348240
>Do you have any arguments for why older would be better?
no, but again, that was never my argument either. your reading comprehension...
>What's your OS? What phone do you use? What computer parts do you use?
Surely you never update any of your software, right? Windows XP all the way, right?
technologically, everything I use is actually quite new. this isn't the gotcha you think it is.

>>
>>82348277
imagine wasting all of the time you could be devoting toward building the amazing thing you won't shut the fuck up about to argue with users of a website you claim to hate about pointless bullshit that doesn't really matter on that very website which your thing is supposed to be the answer to

>>82348368
>Is 4chan FOSS?
I mean. Technically yeah.
>>
>>82348368
>I don't care. they're simply not necessary for something like an imageboard.
I use a few imageboards with user accounts. Took me like 5 minutes to get over the autistic screeching and I realized they're comfy as fuck. I can delete my own threads or posts whenever I like, no stupid time limits. Following certain threads is also handy. Sky's the limit with the features you get with user accounts.
>1.) it works well. 2.) it works efficiently. 3.) it's virtually free of bloat.
If I fuck up captcha or something else, the post I just wrote vanishes and I need to type it again. This has lead me to ctrl+c my post every time before submitting. There are numerous problems like this on 4chan that other sites don't have.
True, 4chan is virtually free of bloat, but so is my imageboard, and it even works better. Doesnt have ads either. I dont want to make money off my users, that's stupid shit.
>no it isn't.
My site isn't a single php file 10 000 lines long. The owner of this website does not know how his site works. There is no coding team on 4chan. They just bought the code and have no idea how it works. A new hack and weeks of downtime is only a matter of time, because nothing was fixed.
>given your reading comprehension, it appears a skill issue.
What do you mean by this? I know how to code, 4chan administration does not.
>correct. see former.
Why do you use Discord when IRC exists? The only difference between them is that Discord costs money and has rounded corners and that modern capitalist look.
>you suck corporate cawk
I use Linux, IRC, Matrix etc. 4chan is the only social media site I browse. I come here to laugh at non tech savvy people.
>real stretch of a statement there.
4chan makes seven figures a year. The purpose of this site is to generate income for the shareholders, not to please 40yo virgins who find this place their mental home.
>so far your arguments have been- 4chan sucks actually
Nice straw man argument.
>>
If the only thing you really like about 4chan is the user base, why couldn't we move the userbase to some other site that has no ads and has better management?
Chinamoot is not the leader we want.

>I use a few imageboards with user accounts. Took me like 5 minutes to get over the autistic screeching and I realized they're comfy as fuck.

>I can delete my own threads or posts whenever I like, no stupid time limits.
this is a bad thing actually.
>Following certain threads is also handy.
you can do that on 4chan lmao. open the settings for once.
>Sky's the limit with the features you get with user accounts.
or with extensions you build. accounts are not necessary.
>If I fuck up captcha or something else, the post I just wrote vanishes and I need to type it again.
I don't experience this problem. I hit back and everything is right where I left it. I solve the captcha and try again. it works.
>This has lead me to ctrl+c my post every time before submitting.
end of the fucking world. somebody call the pentagon.
>There are numerous problems like this on 4chan that other sites don't have.
you listed one (1) non-issue.

no it doesn't.

neither does 4chan if you play your cards right. ;^)
>I dont want to make money off my users, that's stupid shit.
4chan doesn't make money off of me anyway.

this doesn't concern me.

this does not concern me.

sweet, a vacation. then everything will be back up and running again and the world will keep on turning. just like last time.
>What do you mean by this?
he said, in response to my quip about his poor reading comprehension skills. fucking lmao
>I know how to code, 4chan administration does not.
they've demonstrated that they do. they've implemented new code for April fools pranks and new features since 2016. your statement is objectively false.
>Why do you use Discord when IRC exists? The only difference between them is that Discord costs money and has rounded corners and that modern capitalist look.
because everybody uses Discord. I don't like Discord any more than you do, but that's where all the people are.
>I use Linux, IRC, Matrix etc. 4chan is the only social media site I browse. I come here to laugh at non tech savvy people.
you suck corporate cawk.

>The purpose of this site is to generate income for the shareholders, not to please 40yo virgins who find this place their mental home.
I don't care. we live in a capitalist society; that is the purpose of most things. I simply do not give 4chan money and the "problem," if you could call it that, is solved.
>Nice straw man argument.
thanks, I figured that's what we're doing since, y'know, that's like your whole thing.
>>
>>82348608
coordinated site-wide exoduses never work. that's why deplatforming is so effective. there are studies about this. we even saw this firsthand during the 4chan hack. once the shell that houses a community is gone, the community goes as well.

You have digital Stockholm syndrome. Very common among people on the autism spectrum.
I have a friend who absolutely refuses to stop using software he's familiar with
Like, he uses CCleaner even though it's complete cancer these days.
He still believes CCleaner keeps him safe
>>
>>82349020
>You have digital Stockholm syndrome.
or maybe 4chan just isn't anywhere near as bad as you say it is and your little passion project isn't anywhere near as necessary as you think it is.
next time, purchase an ad. or maybe just create a thread calmly inviting people to explore your little altboard without being so needlessly combative. it might go smoother.
otherwise, you're only creative negative association. when you introduce your project by being a dick, people are only going to think, "oh, that's that project run by that guy I interacted with a few weeks ago who was a total asshole to me for no reason. fuck that, I'll stay right where I am."
>>
>>82349134
>oh, that's that project run by that guy I interacted with a few weeks ago who was a total asshole to me for no reason. fuck that, I'll stay right where I am

You're not wrong but I absolutely hate this dynamic.
If you wanna be a web dev or a software dev, you basically need to suck up to people like a motherfucker and basically please all their whims.

>user says your site needs x
>all you can say is "yes sir"
>another user says your site needs less x
>you realize you're fucked because everyone wants something different
>>
>>82349773
>If you wanna be a web dev or a software dev, you basically need to suck up to people like a motherfucker and basically please all their whims
not even that. you just need to not be an asshole. very easy to do actually
>>
Tech doesn't matter whatsoever, you need content and moderation for it to stand out in some ways.

Also remember moot's wise words about how if all you're offering is "being better than 4chan" you don't really have anything. There's a reason sharty took off despite being worse in every regard.
