Alrighto! Here is the threaderino numero uno. I don't know how to start it (yo).
Anyways! What did you bots think of White Nights by Dostoevsky?? Did you enjoy the process of reading/listening to it? Was it le relatable? Was it kino or cringerino? What do you think of Nastenka's actions? Why do you think people call this an incelerino book? Did you like the writing? Any unrelated reflections you want to share?...

Do try, if you want to, to rate it out of /10! So I can rank the books we have read in the future if this thread isn't dead on arrival! Feel free to also explain your reasoning or just drop the rating and close the thread to go play some ebin vidyas. Anything is possible in this thread! In this world! In your mind! Your dreams! Perhaps you're wanting to marry a Chinese emperor? Mmh? But anyways

>POLL TIME!!!
VOTE HERE: https://strawpoll.com/NMnQNDPQGg6
Pick 5! I'll explain why below*
Only *1* book will be read.
Poll lasts for 11 hours if I didn't mess up (if I did, I'll announce the results before the thread dies)

For the synopsises of the books, check here : https://www.goodreads.com/search?q=&qid=

If you don't know how long a book will really be even when looking at the audiobook time then consider the fact that an anime episode is around 20 minutes long and do the math from here!

Also do be careful about the fact that some of these could very well have audiobooks that aren't avalaible for free. From what I've seen very few of them do, I think in this case only one or two. The most popular ones are gonna have an easily accessible one (almost every book in the poll is popular) but if you're confused about some niche one then just check audiobookbay or other resources I linked below and see if it's here.

If the thread ends before the end of the poll. Just refer back to the poll to know which one won, you can get the link to this thread in the archive by typing "sbr".

>IMPORTANT!!*
Yes, there are more books this time around, and more of them to pick! Which is why I'm going to give you two different bonus polls (you don't have to answer them if you're not interested) so we don't end up with having to choose from 200 different books.

- Here is the first one: https://strawpoll.com/Dwyo3lYvoyA
In this one, I'll ask you to vote for 6 different ones you do not ever want to read. That way, the last ~6 to ~9 ones can be deleted from the next poll. But fret not! For if this thread continues by some miracle then we'll have months where we vote for which "undesirables" we want to read. You can also recommend them AGAIN, but they'll be removed from the list of "undesirables" and will be placed in the next official poll.

- Now here is the second one: https://strawpoll.com/eJnvVL5B9nv
In this one I ask you which way you prefer the polls to be. Do you want me to not ever delete a single book again? Do you want to vote for the ones you want to eliminate like we're doing this month? Do you want the last few ones to be eliminated without a separate vote? Or do you want brand new polls, with completely brand new books that people have recommended in the thread prior?

Unrelated, but tell me if you like the idea of themed threads. For example, if these threads were older I'd get rid of every book in the polls and only ask you for Halloween recommendations for next month. And then we'd go back to our regular programming with our books from before. I at least want to do it for Christmas.

--PRESENTATION--

>What is SBR?
SBR stands for Some Bots Read (previously known as Project: Stop Being Retarded)

>What is a Bot?
Someone from the Brotherhood Of Tardation (B.O.T), a member of SBR (you, maybe!)

>What is the point of this thread?
Book club. By retards, for retards. We vote on a book, read it, discuss it once a month (always on weekends). All so you end up maybe slightly less stupid and illiterate

>Do I HAVE to read the same books?
Yes! But also no. Everybody who reads is welcomed to shill what they want, but you won't be a part of the broader discussion and you'll get the book we're reading spoiled for yourself. IF you're talking about an unrelated book's plot points please use the spoiler function. You're also free to ask more personal literature questions to other Bots, but if you seek responses from people who *actually* read then feel free to go on /lit/ instead, or make a new thread on /r9k/

>Do I HAVE to finish them?
You don't need to finish it if you don't like it, but if you want to discuss it and tell us why exactly it wasn't your thing, be prepared to get spoiled the rest of the story you did not finish (obviously)

>Where do I get my books and audiobooks?
Has everything, including non-English : https://fmhy.net/
Most popular place to get EPUBs and PDFs : https://annas-archive.org/
Most popular place to get (English) Audiobooks : https://audiobookbay.lu/

>Reading on your phone?
Install ReadEra or any other e-Reader. You might also need to install a dictionary app (and link it up to the e-reader application for ease of use)

>I-I can't finish it!! I can't concentrate!!
It's normal. Try disconnecting from your computer (I know, I know) and try reading either in the morning, or at night if you're relaxed and not sleepy. If you use your computer before reading you probably won't be able to concentrate much. Also whispering the words can help you stay concentrated. As well as putting some non-intrusive music (check "dark academia" or the Helder channel on youtube). Audiobooks also help a lot, you can read them while walking or even while playing some mindless game you played a thousand times like minecraft. Now add some music in the background and you can safely consooom it and miss like a fourth of it, but hey, you could say you read it!

>Discord?
No

>THREAD THEME (changes every thread, gib recs if you want)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB8s90GC5Fc
Sorry for the lack of originality in choosing this music, I remembered that it's supposed to change every month at the last minute. So here's some Russian Baroque I guess since we're talking about a Russian book.

>NEXT MEETING : Saturday, the 25th of October 2025. Mark you calendars!

Also feel free to send in some of your drawings if you want! I'll add them -- for next thread (and if there is one) -- inside one of the circles next to Frieren you see on the side. You don't have to be good at it you can send a stickman with a huge penus or something.

Begun, the SBR thread has.

>What did you bots think of White Nights by Dostoevsky?
It was an emotional rollercoaster, i found it a bit relatable as to how the protagonist felt lonely and that his life is stagnating. But he was also not that much of a good guy he considered himself to be, the first thing in his mind after seeing Nastenka getting assaulted was how he got an opportunity to talk to her. He projected his waifu fantasies on her.

>Why do you think people call this an incelerino book?
Probably because it appeals to virgin men like me who self insert as the protagonist.

>What do you think of Nastenka's actions?
At first i was thinking this gotta be a typical woman moment. However she was never into the protagonist it seems, she just wanted to use someone to get over the other guy and the protagonist was the perfect opportunity.

I think White nights describes well how complicated the relations between men and women can get despite everyone having good intentions. Also how difficult it is with balancing platonic and romantic feelings. What i liked about the book was that it presented these situations and feelings more realistically compared to the usual romantic slop from that age.

I am a pseud and bad at analyzing literature, but i want to bump the thread somehow.

put Welcome to the NHK novel on the list
>>
>>82633702
Gosh, I'm such a retard. I just finished reading it due to me being busy and procrastinating like a boss and then I was extra retarded as my eBook had White Nights and Bobok in a single file and it confused the hell out of me.
Anyways, I think it was a good first book for this club as it's probably very relatable for no-life robots plus it's an easy read that doesn't require much background knowledge to appreciate it.
The story is kind of the old tale of girls thinking they can be platonic friends with a friend-zoned robot, which falls apart due to the guy getting tired of being an convenient emotional support "friend".
I'm not sure if Nastenka was in the wrong since she told him from the beginning that she's spoken for already and he should have just left her alone to save himself the grief and the opportunity cost of investing in a friendship that's destined to end. I'm sure her husband would feel weird about having such a third wheel around also.

>It was an emotional rollercoaster, i found it a bit relatable as to how the protagonist felt lonely and that his life is stagnating.
Yeah it was relatable to me to. He spent his life dreaming and he's been slowly realizing all of this was a waste of time. He liked to say he may have been bothered by some people pulling him out of his daydreaming but he realized that he needed to actually live.

>But he was also not that much of a good guy he considered himself to be, the first thing in his mind after seeing Nastenka getting assaulted was how he got an opportunity to talk to her. He projected his waifu fantasies on her.
Yeah that's true, it's projection of the fantasies he used to have. We all have fantasized about saving a cute waifu and wifeing her up.

>Probably because it appeals to virgin men like me who self insert as the protagonist.
Tru. Still seems a bit harsh when his biggest crime is wanting someone who loves you, even if his good intentions may not always have been solely because to make her feel better. It seems it was mostly about himself as love can be very selfish in a way. Though at the end, his love did make him completely selfless even when she did not deserve it.

>At first i was thinking this gotta be a typical woman moment. However she was never into the protagonist it seems, she just wanted to use someone to get over the other guy and the protagonist was the perfect opportunity.
Yes, she wanted a rebound relationship. Still was a dick move to leave him alone after that. She was just as selfish as she thought the man she loved was.

>I think White nights describes well how complicated the relations between men and women can get despite everyone having good intentions. Also how difficult it is with balancing platonic and romantic feelings. What i liked about the book was that it presented these situations and feelings more realistically compared to the usual romantic slop from that age.
I agree with all of this. 1/2
>>
>>82633999
It's why I think it can be a very relatable story for many people here. It's the story of a man who dreamt all life, and fell for the first woman who showed him true kindness.
I myself have fallen in love once and the ending in particular was very relatable, as his entire world becomes gray, yet still cannot bring himself to hate the only woman who showed she cared.

>I am a pseud and bad at analyzing literature, but i want to bump the thread somehow.
Thank you! Me too! I suck at it kek. Didn't even have my thoughts in order before starting this thread
>>
I wish I could participate on this one but I've only read The Idiot and The Meek One. I do buy books often, and they pile up quicker than I read them. I see you have Notes From The Underground on your poll, which I bought last year and haven't read yet, so I will vote to read that one next.
>>
>>82633711
You can also make your own *somewhat* enjoyable audiobooks from e-books, it's pretty easy.

All you need is calibre, a local voice model like piper, ffmpeg and some very basic python knowledge. If you have a decent GPU, it takes around 8-10 min to process a book.

>Gosh, I'm such a retard. I just finished reading it due to me being busy and procrastinating like a boss and then I was extra retarded as my eBook had White Nights and Bobok in a single file and it confused the hell out of me.
Don't worry. I too procrastinated a lot, and I too was busy. Good thing it's only two hours lol.

True true to both.

>I'm not sure if Nastenka was in the wrong since she told him from the beginning that she's spoken for already and he should have just left her alone to save himself the grief and the opportunity cost of investing in a friendship that's destined to end
Yeah she did say that at the beginning and it was in big parts the guy's fault. And he might have used her emotional vulnerability against her when she needed it the most. I still think she is highly hypocritical for becoming the person she said she hated just before, and breaking someone's heart so casually.

In fact, I just picked the NFTU from my shelf. And this is so embarrassing as well as infuriating: you claim it can be read in 5 hours but my book is 800 pages long.

Turns out, I actually bought Wordsworth "NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND" and on the back cover and the back cover only it says (and other stories), which includes A Gentle Spirit, which is the same story as The Meek One. I fucking ordered the same story twice on the very same day off of Amazon. I gave 2,54 Euro for the Penguins 100 pages The Meek One, and 3,50 Euro for the Wordsworth 800 pages that include a ton of short stories. Fucking editors who can't name their books properly and fuck online shopping at 4AM, I fucking lost 2,54Euro and now have two of the same item that I wont be able to get rid of because no one reads in this fucking country let alone in English.

I don't recommend reading TOFPPS btw. it's very vapid as far as comparative anthropology goes. better read The Golden Bough. yeah I rec The Golden Bough. snarky experts parrot some ancient review that it's outdated and incorrect, but I could never find what was actually incorrect or proven wrong. it checks out as far as I had read

that was Engels' peak much like The Power of Money was Marx's peak. in a good alternative universe Marx doubled down on PoM and communism never happened because he'd see political, psychological, skill, and social capital it would work on corrupts the same as the financial capital. PoM is a short essay, not a book, can't be included in a poll but can be ready quickly

Anyone here read Mein Kampf? I've read it and I don't get all the criticism it gets about it being nonsensical, hard to follow and overall being poorly written. If anyone ever repeats these same points I just assume that they've never read it.
I never had a problem with following the book or with understanding its content, I guess the second half of the book can be a tough read for anyone not interested in politics, philosophy or ideology.
But I think that the book offers an interesting insight into Hitler's mind and how you can contrast his early political views with his later war-time worldview forged by the conflict and the stress of leading a nation through an impossible struggle.

>>
>>82634613
I honestly do not understand why would anyone ban this book. It's nowhere near as hateful as it's promoted. The only hateful parts I remember is Hitler calling Viennese Jews dirty and stinky. He isn't even being hateful here, I remember reading snippets from reports and newspapers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries talking about Orthodox Jews refusing to wash and being forced into baths during outbreaks.
He commented on his dislike of the Czechs and blamed them for the degradation of the Austrian Empire.
He also said that Russia's vast and fertile lands are wasted on the Russians living there and Germany would utilise that land much better.
That's really it for the evil, hateful rhetoric this book is oh so notorious for.
Oh and he said that Christianity is weak and Germany is weak because of it, but at the same time it's a powerful ideology because it supplanted the pre-Christian Germanic faith with violence or something to that effect.
I read it a few years ago so I might be forgetting something, but if you're looking for a book full of crazy ramblings and indescribable hate then you'll be left disappointed.

Waow, this is my first interaction with Dostoevsky and I have to say, he fucking sucks. It reads like a play. and I hate plays. The whole book is just littered with walls of flowery monologues, which I can't stand at all.

Aside from that, I think the protagonist is very relatable to the r9k plight of being an avoidant cuck. It's the same regrets. Wasted life, no experiences, no ambitions. Except now we have the computer to cope.

True it kinda does

>The whole book is just littered with walls of flowery monologues, which I can't stand at all.
I wouldn't say it's very flowery at all. But maybe it's the translation I've got. I was surprised at how "normal" the prose was. Also I really like long monologues when they're not just repeating the same thing again and again so in my case it was a nice surprise. I thought Dostoevsky would suck but I ended up enjoying it.

>Aside from that, I think the protagonist is very relatable to the r9k plight of being an avoidant cuck. It's the same regrets. Wasted life, no experiences, no ambitions. Except now we have the computer to cope.

Maybe if the SBR threads go on they will gain more popularity. Like the r9gay and britfeel general threads but in smaller scales. Anyways whatever happens OP, don't feel shame or anything, you tried your best which is admirable. I think the idea is very good and if it fails it speaks more about the quality of the board and the regular people browsing it, not you. >>82638374
Well for a rating with numbers I guess I'd give it a 4/5 which would be more like a 7.8/10. If it were a longer book it would be something I'd really enjoy and probably give it an 8.5/10 at least. I really like slower stories where characters go on tangents about the way they feel. And that gave me just that.
As for the characters I thought Nastenka was very cute in a way that I haven't seen a lot before in the books I've read. People always said Dosto was actually good at writing waifus and I caught a glimpse of that. For the main character, I could see myself in him as it mirrors what I felt at certain points growing up so it was nice to be able to relate (especially since I would spend entire days and classes just daydreaming to the point where my teachers got worried about me). Especially since I remember feeling a certain way, and then reading the same thoughts I had back then on paper was nice. Although I didn't agree with some things about the character of course since he's not actually literally me.
And like I said, the book is short, too short, so already just writing this was kinda hard because I forgot most of the details from it.
I expected Dosto to be more like airport literature, but he scratched that right itch for me. Schopenhaeur said:
>A novel will be of a loftier and nobler nature, the more of inner and the less of outer life it portrays.
And that's something I wholeheartedly agree with
>>
>>82638508

Yeah not taking it personally is good. I don't know if you have a job or career, but if you put the same effort into it i feel like you could be quite successful, i think, you certainly aren't retarded. I don't want to sound too corny or anything, idk why but i just want to let you know, maybe because i am bit drunk

Also i forgot to rate with a number (i am >>82633868, also the Storm of Steel poster from the last thread) I would rate it 7/10. At first i was bored, especially during the protagonist's long somewhat incoherent monologues, but after that it was a nice read.

>>82633702
Please, include Goethe's Faust for the next one.

O-Oh come anon... Are you hitting on me?... Y-You're making me blush. But thank you for the kind words, it's very nice

And oh yeah I remember you Storm of Steel nonon, I'm happy to see you back and that you enjoyed it! Thanks for giving me your rating too

>>82638810
I shall! Do come back to heckin' vote for it
>>
By the way. It looks like the option
>Brand new polls every month. With different books people have recommended in the last thread.
Is gonna win the third poll. So if you don't like it either go vote against it or recommend me back the book you have already recommended me in the last threads. Either way, prepare for next month's poll to be totally different if it wins. Storm of Steel anon doesn't have to recommend it again since I assume he'd want it to be there.
>>
>>82638810
I would like to read that as well but it's a really big book, not for retards.

he's doing basic small talk reassurance.
just because someone gives signaling that they'd prefer to have your genetic presence exist and be around doesn't mean they'd like to commit to mixing their genetic material with yours if they could or get sexual co-assurance of presences

anyhow I'm also going to recommend The Gervais Principle book unless recommending multiple books ist verboten. I started it and it's fun and mostly useful so far, and I didn't even watch the series it takes as its analytic basis
>>
>>82639240
Well I thought when people talked about Faust they were talking about the shorter Faust I. But yeah now that I think about it I guess I'll put Faust I + II? Idk I'll have to see if the bot who recommended it comes back to tell me if I need to only put the first one.

Thank you for the overly in-depth scientifical explanation nonon, you're making a lot of sense

>anyhow I'm also going to recommend The Gervais Principle book unless recommending multiple books ist verboten. I started it and it's fun and mostly useful so far, and I didn't even watch the series it takes as its analytic basis
No no, recommending multiple one is very gut or whatever they say. I'll add it to the next poll

>>82639305

Please don't die on me, I want to read the whole thread and reply when I get back from fishing.
Great job OP, I knew I could count on you.

interesting how nobody picked "volume 1" stuff. like yeah you could guess why, but that's mass avoidance lol. people figured out they don't want the monthly threads to become around single series for a while, since after volume 1 inevitably comes volume 2 to consider, and there'd be a split and so on
2 russian lit books in a row are OK for some reason though? guess makes sense that more /r9k/ers would prefer something considered to be rather exotic, commonly known as academic, but inoffensive

Well I might need to go to sleep soon. But I'll read what you wrote. Unless you're back sooner than later. Otherwise it would be without the OP (me!) sadly

>Great job OP, I knew I could count on you.
You got it boss!

>>82639453
Yeah I think with the volume I thing it just seems like a commitment. Like they know they won't get the full thing in one go and are not really ready to jump into a big new series. So far two short books have won.

>2 russian lit books in a row are OK for some reason though? guess makes sense that more /r9k/ers would prefer something considered to be rather exotic, commonly known as academic, but inoffensive
Yeah that too. Also probably the fact that a lot of people might have enjoyed this month's book since it's by the same author
>>
Also forgot to say if me (I), the OP (the one who made the thread (right here, I'm talking) leaves the thread to go to sleep, then feel free to keep recommending me books!

I'll read it all. Because remember that even if you recommended books before, you'll have to recommend them again for next month since we're changing polls every month now

Bumping again because I'm still at work and I still wanna add my two cents

I would've picked Dune vol. 1.

I'll have to catch up on White Nights tonight but I'll read Notes From The Underground before the deadline so I can join the discussion.

So, the amount of thread visitors shrunk a bit, which was to be expected.... did we lose the guys from Israel? Maybe traffic analysis anon is still around?
>>
Hello I am the OP in the middle of an unintentional all-nighter (or you could a white night lawl). I'll make the thread earlier next time to ensure everyone who has to go to work early in the morning can add his two cents.

Nope, the imposter among us has been killed. No mo' Israeli

KEK, nice dubs btw
>>
>>82643658
It was one vote away from a tie (which would have made the other book win since Dosto already won before), so it's all your fault anon. You should be ashamed
