>day one of TRYING to use linux
honestly, it's a pain in the ass, nothing works out of the box like other OS. and when something doesn't work properly it's not clear what the issue is. still, better than using windows 11 though.
>>
>>82830764
>nothing works ootb
yeah that's kind of the point. you get to build everything to your specs.
stick with it. a year from now you'll have a bajillion different macros for doing all sorts of shit and you'll be just marginally faster than the average windowsfag

I just use brute force until shit starts working. I remember all GTK2/3 applications suddenly took 5+ minutes to load (no exaggeration) along with a few other stuff. For some reason I had to create an environment variable related to DBUS and fuck fuck man idk why that fixed it.

I switched in 2015 because I saw Windows 10 and said "yeah, fuck that bullshit"
I switched my applications to cross-platform ones first. (eg, I started using VLC to play videos even before I switched the OS), that made it easier.
But yeah, you do have to be motivated to do it.

Running cinnamon and couldn't be easier even for a complete retard like me

that's the plan
>>82830812
when windows 10 released i just assumed it was going to be as shit as windows 8, so i just stuck with windows 7 for a while, until i was forced to switch to windows 10.
>But yeah, you do have to be motivated to do it.
windows 11 and microsoft overall is more than enough motivation.
>>82830866
my cinnamon has been having network issues that i can't troubleshoot. online stuff simply refuse to load on my PC, and my internet is completely fine on other devices.
>>
>>82830764
My shit just worked.
Installed debian 12 xfce. No issues in the 3 years I've been on it. Only thing I had to tinker with was some terminal commands to set a screen limit for my wacom tablet.

Skill issue on your part I guess
>>
>>82830764
What distro are you using? There's plenty of ones that just werk, so maybe you should have tried some of those out before settling for something that might require more extensive manual customization.
>>82830788
>yeah that's kind of the point.
Not really. The Linux ecosystem is very extensive, so if you just want something that works out of the box where you don't have to bother with extensive tuning, then there exist options for that.
>>
>>82830882
>>when windows 10 released i just assumed it was going to be as shit as windows 8,
when they released Windows 8 I was all "lmao, this 'Metro' tablet UI crap has to be a mistake, obviously in the next version they'll revert that and bring back God's Own Theme - Windows Classic
Then they released Windows 10 and not only was there a bunch of telemetry and spyware (that, and only that, was backported to 7, which was telling) but they doubled down on the rotten-ass UI and made that aggressive force-upgrade push.
So I said "Hey, Microsoft, suck my dick", and got off my ass and installed Linux.
>>
>>82830922

the windows refugee distro: Mint.
>>
>>82830949
you get used to it in like 2 weeks desu and then after that you'll never want to go back to windows again

Read the Mint wiki, use google or even better ask an AI for assistance.

well, i'm dealing with a problem which i have no clue why it is even happening
>>82831023
the most coherent suggestion i got was messing with DNS servers and i don't think that's the problem since my other devices are connect to the same network and they're loading online content just fine
>>
>>82830764
Day 2 here, I've been having connection issues, but those aren't my main gripe.
Nix feels overall quite nice.
The only thing I despise is that my mouse gets stuck on the edge between my monitors if I don't move it fast enough. I want mouse movement to be unimpeded by anything that isn't a full on bound. Not some crossover between displays.

Have dabbled into Linux for a combined 4 weeks before going back to Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC.
Linux these days is alright if:
>You play games on Steam.
>You go online and you consume media (preferably pirated media).
>You sometimes work with documents.
>You generally do other simple normie tasks.
>You don't mind going into the terminal to type some commands sometimes.
>You happen to have the right combination of hardware and peripherals that Linux has drivers for.
Linux is still shit if:
>You're a woman (with some autistic exceptions).
>You edit videos, even just casually.
>You want to organize a lot of media, such as a porn collection.
>You play obscure, old and pirated vidya, a lot of which won't even run without a lot of headache-inducing tinkering. Or won't run at all, no matter what you do.
>You have peripherals and hardware that don't play well with Linux.
>You don't like having to troubleshoot issues by googling shit for hours (because only 3-5% of people use desktop Linux) and copy/pasting commands into a terminal. Sometimes you'll get a problem for which nobody has ever asked for help online, so you\ll have to figure it out by yourself by throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks.
>You're used to some actually amazing software on Windows that simply doesn't have a Linux alternative that's equally competent (ex: pirated Adobe Premiere, the Directory Opus file manager)
All of this means that the switch is either going to be very easy for you, or very annoying and ultimately not possible. My mom's absolutely fine on Fedora Workstation because all she does is go online. Meanwhile I just couldn't do the same. The software options on Linux are just very lacking.
>>
>>82830764
what are you trying to do that won't work out of the box? Most mainstream distros just werk.
>>
>>82831260
last time i tried using Mint it would constantly freeze for no reason, this time around it was a network issue that i've managed to fix. i almost went with Ubuntu before deciding to give Mint one more chance.
>>
>>82831277
>i almost went with Ubuntu before deciding to give Mint one more chance.
good decision. There are many reasons Mint also has a debian based version.

Freezes sound like your hardware and drivers don't get along. If you are on a slightly old nvidia card that might be it.
>>
>>82831249
you could have had a dual boot
>>
>>82831320
i'm using the same hardware this time around and it's not freezing/stuttering
>>
>>82831347
I know, but it's pretty messy. I don't like having to reboot all the time between the two OSs and having to maintain/update 2 OSs at the same time. Also the problem with Windows not "seeing" ext4 partitions so whatever files I have in Linux are not available in Windows. It's just too cumbersome for me. I have a job, I game, I organize media and I consume content. I don't have time for this, I need one OS that allows me to do my work/fun.
>>
>>82831363
then don't ask me. If your first time was on a live usb then that sometimes causes issues. But idk, linux is weird sometimes.
>>
>>82831365
what you're gonna do when you can't do that stuff on windows 10 anymore?
>>
>>82831365
Tho I dual-boot Bazzite and Windows on my ROG Ally and I really like it. I play my pirated games on Windows and my paid Steam games on Bazzite. But gaming is all I do on that thing, which is why it works. Updating Bazzite is very easy while I keep Windows without updates because it's mostly offline anyway.
>>
>>82831400
That's well into the future, probably 2032 when support for 10 completely stops. And I could always just keep using the software I have now. Premiere 2025 and the other software I use will still work just fine even beyond 2032.
Also, there's Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC, which I could always switch to if needed. It's just like 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC, but with a dumber UI. Still, I could get used to it if needed.
In the future if Windows keeps getting shittier, I'll probably do a pass-through VM. Have Linux running a Windows VM at 95% speed, so I can game and edit video on Windows while using Linux for everything else.
>>
>>82830764
It's a pain in the ass to set up initially I aggree, but once you get it just right you can keep it working exactly the way you want it for years.

No random shit ("features") popping up out of nowhere messing up your system and slowing it down. No pc starting up on it's own in the middle of the night to do god knows what, then shut off, no screenshotting your desktop every 5 seconds for "security". No actual malware processes comming preinstalled and working in the background, half of which you have never even heard of.

Update when you want, dont update at all, it does whatever you tell it to do. (what a concept right)
>>
>>82831123
>first distro is NixOS
That's pretty ballsy of you lol. Nix is NOT for beginners in the slightest.
>The only thing I despise is that my mouse gets stuck on the edge between my monitors if I don't move it fast enough
This is likely an issue with your WM/DE.
>>
Tried it for months, decided it was a meme and went back to Windows.

>network issues
That'll do it. I first tried ubuntu in 2005 and it wouldn't play nice with my broadcom wifi card. Smartphones didn't even exist back then and there was no way I was going to repeatedly boot back and forth between linux and windows to get it working. It was 2005 though.
Why don't you stick to fucking around with a virtual machine?

I downloaded Linux Mint and was playing Steam games and posting on 4chan within 15 minutes of installing the os. Skill issue.
