never done this. i like immersing myself and self-inserting as my character, and that's often more difficult with women characters. blank slates can be fine, but there's usually just too much distance, especially if the characters' femininity is emphasized in visuals or story. this even applies to things like fighting games. but i get it. either you project onto the character or you go for eye candy. it's binary, not a sliding scale. so if you don't do the former you may as well go all in on the latter and doll the character up as your dream girl. (i.e. marisa wedding dress)

When I make a character and it's male I usually see it as a reflection of myself. When I create a character and it's a female it's me just making a girl I find attractive. I am essentially making a waifu. I would much rather play a waifu because if I'm going to stare at something for hundreds of hours I would like it to be eye candy. It also helps that female characters usually have better customization options. I can spend time collecting all kinds of outfits and dolling up my waifu which is enjoyable. I don't feel any enjoyment dolling up a male character. Thus making a female character is the ideal option.
