>>82946134yes, i studied chemistry through basically the most advanced classes that are "classes" aka 700 level, which is where formal in-a-class teaching stops and after that you would join a lab and learn further about their specific research area directly from the professor and the grad students. in specific i took 700 level advaned organic chemistry and 700 level bioactive natural products which is organic chemistry related; i always found organic chemistry pretty easy, weird to say but its more like pokemon than anything else. i think people have trouble with it because they try to memorize specific ways to do things since that works in school earlier, but with organic chemistry there are just too many things and too many ways to use them. so you have to understand them as sort of categories and mechanisms...like if you need to turn one chemical into another on a test or irl, you cant memorize all the chemicals that exist and all the ways they react with everything else, its too much. you have to be like ok well i know how to turn the starting chemical into a 2nd thing which is "closer" to the final product, then into a 3rd thing which is "closer" than that, then a 4th, then a 5th, then a 6th, and so on until you get to the final thing. and crucially, if you dont remember how to do one of the steps chemically, like you remember "i can turn #4 into #5 somehow but i forget with what added other chemical" you can just say that and you get half the points for that step, and if you get everyone else (both the change and the method) for a 5-step problem then you get 9/10 of the points. but if you just stare at it and leave it blank because you dont remember the exact things to do then you get no points.(1/18)

>>82946134its not that close an analogy but the broad context is you want to blend a good and broad knowledge of the possibilities that are out there with a willingness to be flexible in your approach if you dont know exactly what to do. and like, of course top pokemon players know all the types of things and their moves by heart...but this doesnt mean they have it all figured out. official nintendo tournaments are much more "figured out" than the fan ones that ban "op" things that dominate the game, but there was a nintendo tournament years and years ago where basically everyone had the same few "best pokemon" aside from one or two being swapped out. and then there was one guy who had a pachirisu, which, if you dont know pokemon, is not considered to be good at all. but he figured out a really specific way in which pachirisu with certain moves could be used to beat the samey teams everyone else had. im kind of getting further from the point but uhh anyway...i was mostly not taking stuff in the math or physics side of chemistry really. i did take one class on reaction kinetics which is sort of how to calculate the rates of a reaction from what the things are going around in a solution bumping into each other, how fast they will hit each other, how much energy is required for a reaction, etc...its sort of like calculating how fast milk will go sour in a way but its very very complicated when you get into accounting for things like catalysts and reactions with multiple steps in the same solution, like first this has to bump into that and turn into this and then that has to bump into the catalyst and stick there until this other thing bumps into it and how long will it take for that to happen for given concentrations at a given temperature. that was probably the hardest class i ever took, it was halfway between a class really and being in a person's lab because it was basically only taught to people who were going to start working with that team.(3/18)

(bleach works well alone, for making wastewater "seem clean", but there was some concern that it actually made pharmaceuticals worse by attaching chlorine atoms to them at random, which usually makes things more toxic and more able to cross into the brain from the blood.) and i basically found out that yes, it did work well with bleach, but actually it made the levels of these chlorinated byproducts way worse compared to bleach alone (which you might expect since it made the reaction faster and stronger).(4/18)
and that finding was the result of basically two years of mixing up a reaction and taking samples every five minutes for two hours and putting each sample into a tiny jar and lining up the jars in a machine that measured just a few of the possible reaction products for each reaction between bleach, the catalyst, and a given pharmaceutical that was a concern. it was excruiatingly slow work and aside from that i was just fucking bad at it. im not the most attentive person or at least not 100% of the time...and when youre only attentive 98% of the time, you can get 98% on tests all through school which is an A+ of course, but in this situation if 2 out of every 100 samples is fucked up your results are basically worthless and unreliable. so i had to repeat things over and over...and you cant just do the 2 over because to do proper science you need a whole run thats valid within itself without random mistakes. you cant just be like "outlier" and cross it off...maybe if its 1 in 1000 but 2 in 100 is too much. so funnily its actually pretty similar to the mouse situation you described. i was in a thing do get a masters and bachelors at the same time but basically said fuck it my results are shoddy and the only thing i even mightve proved with good results is that doing it this way is worse than where we started. and i basically had the realization that, well, if these pharmaceuticals in wastewater are a serious concern, and turning the frogs gay or whatever, then maybe we should just....not pee in the fucking water. human waste is a tiny portion of what enters the wastewater stream and the best way to keep pharmaceuticals out would just be to pee and poop into a fire instead and burn it...then everything else like dishwater bathwater etc can go down the drain and who cares.(5/18)
now that was kind of self-serving because hey, if i finished my results officially, it would be in the books that this way of doing things doesnt work, and you never know what might be of use in some way someday, like maybe somebody would need to put chlorine on something to make a drug or w/e and what i looked into might be something to try. and the other thing is, a big part of the concern was pharmaceuticals given to animals entering the water, which is a real problem (half the men in denmark are infertile because of this with pigs, or at least thats one theory as to why they got no jimmy juice with the right jim jazz) and it would cost a lot of energy to burn all the pig poop from all the pig farms in the world...probably still the right approach. or maybe just dont give pigs so many drugs...and if that means we have less pork then...okay...eat less pork? i was like you know...more or less what im researching is how to clean up pig poop...and i think the best way to reduce pig poop would be...a few less pigs. so i kind of felt like we were going about the problem in entirely the wrong way. (and to jump back, thats not an epistemic concern, but rather a reconsideration of what the problem actually is that we're applying the scientific method to....if its making there be less pig drugs in the water, well, having teams of scientists spend years developing new ways to clean pig drugs out of the ocean once theyre in there would not be my first idea.)(6/18)
and soo...iiiin conclusion.....im really glad that i studied chemistry in school cause i learned a lot of cool things, and i would really recommend studying chemistry in college because its probably the major where you get to play with the most expensive toys. even the random analytical grade scales you use are five thousand dollars each and the machines you use in your lab classes are easily into the hundreds of thousands and millions. its the only major that touches on both theories about reality itself as well as cleaning burnt crap out of whats basically a bong. (a two thousand dollar bong but whatever.)you get to use some expensive stuff in physics as well, probably up to even more expensive stuff than we did at colleges that have particle accelerators, but its still not hands on in the same way...like "i brewed up this crap in a jar and now im gonna put it in a two million dollar machine to see if i made the right crap" is a very strange thing to be doing., and in comparison, nothing else at college seems nearly worth the money. like i can read a book myself you know? i knew enough about english and history from random reading outside school that none of the classes in school were hard or even very interesting, aside from when i had a few really funny and knowledgeable teachers who would have lots of random tangential things to say. and that was basically the same for the few history and english classes i took in college, i was just like why am i paying for this...obvs at the higher courses its more interesting im sure but they dont let you jump straight there and i was like yeah not gonna sit through three years of stuff i already know for the chance of an interesting class or two.(7/18)>HAMWP
and also i was never gone learn math by myself. chemistry isnt the most math heavy compared to physics or well math so i took a few other interesting courses on 3d calculus and inductive logic, that last one was really tough and i got a literal 39 on one of the tests which is the lowest grade i ever got. luckily the professor was chill and if your final exam grade was better than your class overall grade he just entered the final exam grade for your whole grade. so i studied really hard on that and got a B on the final. that wasnt the *hardest* class i ever took, the one i mentioned earlier about reaction kinetics was definitely harder, the final exam for that was 8 or 9 math problems that each took like three or four pages of equation manipulation to solve. it was in the chemistry department but basically a math class taught by an ex soviet professor who wrote his own textbook and just passed it out as sheets in a binder. the final exam took about 6 or 7 hours and i still have it somewhere lol.(8/18)

but the most interesting course was definitely the bioactive natural products one i mentioned...its funny because it sounds like a hippie or wackadoo thing but actually it was about looking in plants and animals for compounds that could be of use in pharmaceuticals or other things. its actually a real job, basically merck and glaxosmithkline will send teams of scientists to the jungles and wherever to collect novel plants and animals that either have interesting properties like frogs that freeze solid and live or iike plants that the local tribes use for painkillers or psychedelics or to cure indigestion. it sounds like some old timey business but its still very real, especially with areas that are difficult to explore like papua new guinea as well as deep ocean trench creatures with weird properties and really odd chemicals inside them. sea sponges for example have toxins with really bizarre chemical structures that are unlike anything else, and big pharma sends scientists and divers to gather weird looking sponges or ones that native peoples use to make poisons or w/e and theyll catalogue them scientifically and smash them up into goo to analyze. so its actually "ethnobotany" when it relates to things native people use, which sounds like one of those fake things but its actually a major thing for big pharma...and so big pharma actually still has teams that explore deep into papua new guinea to find really remote tribes and try to see what they use for poisons and medicines. pretty wild that thats still a thing and if i were to go back and i had to pick a part of chemistry to join a lab for it would probably be that. the professor who taught it didnt have a lab, she was a teaching professor but she was from argentina so it was an interest of hers and she just taught a random advanced class on it because she liked the subject. but i probably couldve tried to find labs in other places studying that stuff to apply to after college.(9/18)
but i didnt...the professor in the lab i was at asked me to do a phd there even though the thing i studied didnt really work out and i was like...ehhhhh, it kind of sucks putting things into vials all day...and also, being in a laboratory building made my skin really irritated, they have to have high airflow in there from fume hoods and stuff so chemicals dont build up in the air, it dried out my skin and i slowly turned like red and itchy all over during the summer when i was there full time. weird ass problem but theres basically no solution other than slathering yourself with moisturizer constantly, literally giving yourself a slime coat like a frog. idk if i have sensitive skin kind of or what but it just didnt work for me to be there. hospitals are the same way cause of airflow control for disease prevention. and in addition to the skin problem, jobs in chemistry pay crapola. so i got my bachelors degree and left to work at an ice cream store and a coffee shop for eight dollars an hour plus tips...which when it was busy was probably not much less than the fifteen to seventeen chemistry jobs paid at the time. ofc if you networked and stuff you could get a better job out of college than that, maybe making 50-60k, but i didnt and the jobs seemed fucking mind crushing anyway and also there was the skin problem.(10/18)
well actually, before that. i had a gig during college writing google-tricking spam articles for random websites wanting to boost their rankings, from which i made a little over 30 an hour, but at the time i left the lab i got fired from that because my spam articles were too nonsensical. it was really "blogspam" which is basically articles with a lot of words on a subject that dont really say anything, but they were still supposed to be mostly normal and on topic in case anyone actually clicked on them and looked at them. but i realized basically no one was checking, not my boss or the client -- people were buying more spam than they could ever possibly check over for accuracy and making sense. so i just watched tv while my fingers typed literally random meandering thoughts, and as long as it was grammatical and unique and had the keywords and it was properly punctuated it WOULD trick google. so it worked great as spam, and i was able to make over 30 an hour at 8/10ths of a cent a word. you can do the math on how many words i wrote if i made 60k from this over several years of college. but then as i said someone actually looked at the articles and my boss was furious and fired me and basically accused me of using chatgpt to do it......except chatgpt didnt exist yet lmao...and if i invented chatgpt 7 years before sam altman why would i just be using it just to cheat him out of a few dollars...if he really thought that he shouldve tried to hire me not fire me. fucking goofball. but anyway ive already written up a long story about that experience and working at an ice cream store after that, which i can link if you want, its 80 pages i wrote in a few days several months ago. i can write a lot pretty fast as you can see, which i have that job to thank for....(11/18)

i kept arguing on the internet with people here and then later on substack which is pretty free speechy as well (or at least its just up to individual blogs to ban or allow you instead of getting banned from the whole site) and let me tell you, being the one reader of serious history/literature books who also has a pretty wide knowledge of real science basically lets you win everything, at least where people are dealing in any kind of sense or logic. and as for when they dont, or when they give up on that, i discovered that thats where poetry comes in, either the silly kind to make fun of them in a way that nothing else quite can, or the grand kind to write something that sounds like its hundreds of years old....but then they google it to see what youre quoting and they find fucking nothing. that will shut a fucker up like nothing else. there are some other threads to that as well...i took latin in high school and basically spent all of 12th grade translating the aeneid line by line and analyzing the meter (the formal rhythm basically, it was very strict in ancient poetry) and all the poetic devices used. and another factor was that ive always listened to tons of music, like ive pirated tons and tons over the years and when i was playing games i would put on a queue of new albums and comb through them for songs to save into playlists -- basically cratedigging for records but from your apartment. it was mostly on what.cd which is gone now but orpheus.network exists and you can get invited by taking an interview with one of the admins, anyone can request one and its not hard, basically just memorizing all the major rules of the site as well as some technical stuff about how to rip music from cds and records with high fidelity. (you dont actually have to DO that to join or dl stuff, but you have to seed your downloads to maintain a certain ratio of seed to leech or youll get your downloads halted til your ratio improves. its annoying at first but if you dl big new releases on the day youll get a lot of seed credit from people coming in to get them over the next week or so...a few months to a year of doing that and seeding 24/7 and you basically dont have to worry about it and you can download infinite music. theres spotify these days of course, but its missing a lot of stuff and orpheus.network has a lot of concert bootlegs as well, idk where else youd get those but knowing oldhead music guys irl.(14/18)
so thats how i became the only living poet in the classical style as far as i know. bold claim but i can back it up. i run a thread on lit every 13 months + 1 day where i bump it myself to the end writing epic oc...against the rules technically but a mod literally said in the first one that he was allowing me to do it because he was so fucking bored of moderating and it was finally something new lmao. as far as im aware. the last one like me was samuel taylor coleridge who -- as a matter of fact -- was also really into chemistry. he stopped writing poems when he was 30 and scarily i started just before then...id written some things earlier in school and stuff but was never that happy with it, but i had been reading coleridge's biographia literaria which is sort of his book on his thoughts on like literally everything, which includes a lot of analysis of english poetry in the same way i did the aeneid in school, and it just came to me one day during an internet argument and i just hammered this random guy like a bolt of lightning...and nothing has been the same since. well its mostly been the same, but it basically feels like i gained a superpower that day. my urge to do it comes and goes but when i step up on lit i can do things that blow people away. well, ive done 2 so far. i can also rap pretty well. i did a few bars in the previous thread kek.(15/18)
actually i forgot, there was one guy in the first lit thread i did who could also do it well. he was using the name "frater asemlen" and he wrote some cool lines like "...the multitudinous words in this thread / which like raging leviathans have bred / with saurian fecundity their spawn..." --- that last line for example is a perfect example of iambic pentameter verse, which is the meter i was working in for one of the poem series i did there. i dont think he even knew about the formal rhythm i was using, he just picked it up from reading what id already written in that style in the thread. so as far as modern people who have -- i dont know what to call it -- the spark of the ancient art, the real one, that of homer and milton, there is me and there is him, and that is it. he's written a few books under that pseudonym which i havent read...but i suppose i really ought to. i wish he would write more poetry though.anyway yeah chemistry is neat. another random book rec in addition to the biographia literaria would be "modern british eloquence" which is a book of parliamentary speeches from the 1700s through the 1950s, it contains a lot of very quotable stuff and excellent arguments very applicable to modern problems of an important nature, but also of a practical nature like on healthcare and stuff...its a real whirlwind of rhetoric and a pretty fascinating ride through the changes in english over that time frame. my favorites i think were probably pitt and disraeli; disraeli in particular speaks almost in a poetic style thats pretty different from anything else. there was one other guy who id call a favorite too but i cant remember which and i lent the book to my parents and havent gotten it back yet cause they keep being like im still working on it. imona get it back next time im at their place one way or another lel. too good of a book not to have around for using in internet arguing. maybe someday i will argue on more than the internet but who knows.(16/18)
another good book is "silver poets of the 16th century," its a collection of a lot of less well known people from the time of shakespeare but also well-known people who i never knew wrote poetry that we know of, like sir walter raleigh...and the first poem in the book is basically a guy being like "i fucked the queen" in a rather unsubtle metaphor and then a few years later he was executed for...fucking the queen...by king henry viii. surprised he made it that long really...john donne & edmund spenser are astounding as well though a little more complex in grammar and antiquated language, which its important to have at least some grasp on or you dont get the poetic flow....but at the same time the flow helps you understand the language by showing you how its pronounced. so you can work back from coleridge to shakespeare to donne and spenser and really all the way back to chaucer and pretty quickly be able to read even stuff like the pearl poem reasonably well. if you do this, you will be far better at reading and understanding this stuff than literally any living person who calls themselves a professor of poetry. that also sounds like a bold claim but heres the thing -- you absolutely HAVE to get editions that have faithful original texts. the edits and "updated language" done by people in the 20th century genuinely completely ruin the poetic flow. its absolutely shocking and it shows that the people making the "updated language editions" genuinely have no idea what the fuck theyre doing and they havent for nearly a hundred years. they have no idea how this material is actually supposed to sound. they deliver it like stilted modern "poetry" when it actually has very strict formal rhythms like classical works going back to homer. its not that these rhythms are never "broken" or played with, but its done for effect and their departures from meter never feel awkward or wrong to read the way the modern "updated versions" do.(17/18)

I don't want to go out drinking, listening to loud music or be in crowds therefore a normalfag who likes that won't be a fitting bf. I don't like sports.
