Oh nice, lots of stuff.

Fair 'nuff, games are fun :)

> I like cooking, making myself dinner and then eating it is fucking awesome
Hell yeah. I think if I had more time to myself I'd enjoy cooking more but as it stands it feels like a chore to me.

> I also garden and sew
What are you growing? Got any plants you're particularly proud or fond of? Idk about gardening but I've been considering getting some heirloom apple tree seeds and planting a sapling behind my house
>>
>>84088505
right now I'm mainly growing Tomatoes to use in salads

Damn that's a lot, got any favorites or things you'd recommend?
>>
>>84088617
it's more like 12k probably, those are only titles purchased from jeff and no other platforms, pdfs/epubs/mobi, audibooks, lectures, physical books, other storefronts etc.

i have many favorites and have posted plenty before. here, tell me what you find interesting and i'll build a recommendations list for you for fun.
>>
>>84088549
I really like tomatoes
>>84088617
I also want to grow some lettuce to use in a BLT, but if I'm going to grow the lettuce and tomato, I might as well grow the bacon as well, which I can't

Throw in some of your own favorites and you have a deal; I'm primarily interested in sci-fi, investigative crime, and things that explore alternative societal structures.

I really liked Fringe as a TV show, The Man in the High castle interested me from the perspective of the what-if in it's world building, Fallout is interesting to me as well. Although it was smut, there was a really good story that used to be on Literotica which delved surprisingly deep into it's society but it seems like it was wiped from existence. Seeing characters push past major failures is great too

>>84088648
Yeah it'd be pretty stressful when your swine gets the flu desu

In all seriousness though, I'd probably want to raise some livestock of some kind. Chickens or ducks could be interesting but I'm told they smell.

Photography, drawing, painting, I like reading books and im trying to get into survivalism after being enlightened (i read uncle teds books) I got the SAS survival guide, so im gonna read that. I want to start welding too, my coworker told me to just go to a work shop and ask them to teach me. I wanna be able to build shit (like a small hydro power plant). I'll be studying mechE this autumn. Super exited! Reason for that is because I want to be able to create things that are handy (I wanna become a prepper) and because good pay (and im interested in physics) I want to learn how to hunt but I got no one to teach me and fire arms are illegal where I live.

hold on, most of this is nonfiction so i have to look.

jg ballard's high rise, super-cannes, the atrocity exhibition.
samuel r delany's dhalgren, babel-17 was just ok.
michael moorcock's behold the man and gloriana.
the southern reach trilogy by jeff vandermeer which is now technically a quartet, but cities of saints and madmen is better for a start of the overarching ambergris narrative. need to read dead astronauts.
william gibson's neuromancer.
snow crash by neal stephenson as well as cryptonomicon.
stories of your life and others and exhalation by ted chiang.
labyrinths by jorge luis borges.
invisible cities, the complete cosmicomics, and if on a winter's night a traveler by italo calvino.
the name of the rose, foucault's pendulum, the prague cemetery, and numero zero by umberto eco.
house of leaves by mark z danielewski.
flatland: a romance of many dimensions by edwin abbott abbott.
the house on the borderland by william hope hodgson.
heart of darkness by joseph conrad.
skin by kathe koja.
we have always lived in the castle, the haunting of hill house, and the lottery and other stories by shirley jackson.
a good man is hard to find and other stories by flannery o connor.
her body and other parties by carmen maria machado.
black juice by margo lanagan.
haunted by chuck palahniuk, also lullaby, diary, and invisible monster remix.

i have a lot of pat cadigan and cory doctorow to read but they're new enough i don't have recs yet. you'd probably like china mieville if you like alternative societal structures. i hear embassytown, the city and the city, and perdido street station are good starting points. the three body problem is supposed to be good by cixin liu. tor.com has a lot of short stories/novellas free on their site or available for a few bucks. search by nebula award winners.

hm, i can tell my internal search indexing isn't working because it's showing more ballard and mieville in the general display than when i try searching their names.

That's some fancy organization. I just toss all my ebooks into either a "books I haven't read yet" folder or a "books I've already finished reading" folder.

House of Leaves is actually the last book I read and now it's time to change folders. It's a good book but only for a certain audience, and I don't know many people who would be receptive to a recommendation. A book that's bigger on the inside (thanks to excessive footnoting) is cute, but I honestly might skip Johnny if I ever read it again, you know?

Not OP tho.

no the fuck it isn't lmao, it's just an indexed search that doesn't work properly. these are the categories kindle automatically generates, and the numbers are off because the higher number incorporates physical books purchased on amazon but neither one incorporates all the other books i've gotten in any form OFF amazon, even on subsidiaries like audible (which shows 108 here but 656 in-app).

>house of leaves, but epub
interesting choice. i've had how the irish became white on a backlog for a long time. invisible women by criado-perez was shilled hard for a while which confused me because i already had a book called invisible women by fox and wykes about murdered sex workers. need to get around to reading it at some point. i heard criado-perez had a tough go of it online after, men who hate women by laura bates would likely be a good companion piece (NOT men who hate women (and the women who love them) by dr susan forward or men who hate women by stieg larsson which btw op >>84089051 is another good rec, that's the original name for the girl with the dragon tattoo).

nice choice of invisible man, in the time of the butterflies, and if on a winter's night. i forgot about my brief obsession with the mirabel sisters. thank you for posting that, i need to go grab that book. and actually sit down and read eva luna/the stories of eva luna and the house of the spirits, not to mention crack into clarice lispector and anais nin like i kept saying i would after burning through marina tsvetaeva and anna akhmatova following emily dickinson and simone weil... tfw fall back into pragmatism after mysticism.

love that you have percival everett. i LOVED erasure and american fiction did not do it just at all no matter how good of an actor jeffrey wright may be.

back to the point, house of leaves has long been /x/'s favorite book, hence the typical 4chan recommendation. if op is sensitive to johnny's segments, he should skip the chuck p and koja recs as well.

99% was readable on my phone (my ereader of choice), there was just 1% in which I had to either switch to a .mobi file (which preserved NONE of the formatting other than bold/italic/underline/strikethrough-- not even color) or wait until I got home to the larger screen of my computer and then switch to a PDF.

Our civilization is still not at the "House of Leaves is 100% fully readable as an ebook in an ereader" level of technological advancement yet.

But at least this epub has now been moved to the "Read" folder where it belongs.

My specific epub had most of it fully legible even on a smaller screen, and only a few pages were straight up scanned photos instead of OCR'd text.

I enjoyed "I'm Glad My Mom Died" a whole lot. It's definitely not some intellectual masterpiece, it just aims to connect with you on an emotional level. Her mom dies like halfway through the book, but the suffering continues because even in death your tormentor can still torment you just from how they shaped you. A lot of people on 4chan were very disappointed because they went in expecting a shocking expose on the entertainment industry, and instead it's just a detailed look at one specific mother of one specific kid in the entertainment industry. Even other kids and other parents are shown in the book to be much saner and healthier than she is. Instead of a takedown of the whole system, it's just one completely random tragedy of life circumstances.

Don't do anorexia and bulimia, folks. It's not worth it.

>>84089446
haha holy shit reading that was a flashback to my own childhood. my mom made me memorize diet books and split lean cuisines with her, replace everything with shit like boca burgers, and obsessively study eat this not that books.
>but mom speaks before i can. "we'll talk about it later."
>"let's talk about this some other time," mom interrupts mrs. gutierrez in the way that tells me "some other time" is never going to come.
>"people are just being dramatic".

literally verbatim. she'd get mad i was fat if i was considered underweight and told i was anorexic too, and thought it was grand i was freezing all the time with an oddly low core body temp, icy hands and nose, and low blood pressure. she had me put those freezing hands on her to cool her off because she was always hot.

>but i have the smart idea that if i only eat half my food, i'll only be receiving half the calories, which means that i will be shrinking twice as fast. i proudly show my half-eaten portions to mom after every meal. she beams.

my mom still does the last part and makes it a competition to see who can eat the least and get the most concern from waiters/other people (as did my grandmother who would constantly comment I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU CAN EAT ALL OF THAT, I GET SOOOOO FULL FROM JUST TWO BITES about literally anything, genuinely you could cut a small thin crust slice of cheese pizza in half and she would still compete with you and try to give you her portion).

i remember doing that math to get down to <200 calories in 7th grade math class then coming home to see /fit/ spam calories in calories out and moot ask any woman he talked to on here if she was fat before saying he lost like 80 pounds when he was 15 from stopping drinking soda and going on walks.

>I pick up my phone and urgently start typing TMZ into my search bar. Joe reminds me we agreed not to look at the pictures--he knows my body image isn't good--but I don't care. I need to see them. I need to see if Mom's right.

>She is. I look awful. My body and face repulse me. I do look pudgy. I no longer wear one-pieces but I still wear board shorts to hide my ass, which is curvy and womanly and disgusts me for being those things. Joe tells me my tits look great in my bikini top but I don't see it. I think boobs are hideous. I hate them. I wish I was flatchested and curveless. I wish there was nothing sexual or suggestive about my body.

> [ . . . ]

>I go back to my email and another new message from Mom has popped up. I open it:

"YOU caused my cancer to come back. I hope you're happy knowing this. YOU have to live with this fact. YOU gave me cancer."

>I draft a response to her, asking if we can just sit down and talk this out face-to-face. I'm sure that if she'll just grant me that, I can explain myself enough to earn her approval. I'm desperate, pleading.

"My dear Nonny Mommy

Please can we at least just meet up in person to talk about this? Please. Just me and you. We can sit down and talk this out. I can answer any questions you have. Please Mommy. I hate letting you down. I would do anything to not disappoint you. I feel confident that if you knew the whole situation you wouldn't think these things about me. I love you so much. I want to be close to you again. I miss you.

Love, Nettie"

>I click my phone off and tuck it into Joe's pocket. He asks what she said. I tell him nothing. I'm numb. Catatonic. The entire plane ride home, I don't say a word.

> [ . . . ]

>The plane lands. While we're circling the tarmac, I open my email draft to Mom. I hit send. Moments later, my phone pings with a response from Mom:

"Sure, we can meet up. P.S. Reminder to send fridge money. Our yogurt has soured."

Normal Mormon burial rites. She was still in denial back then. Here's the book's prologue, showing how she revered her mother even on the deathbed.

>>84089587
yuuuuup, sounds about right. i think it's the constant conditioning of how nobody loves you like your parents, but especially your mother, ever will. and the knowledge that that is true to some extent. when they die, you don't get a do-over. you just get a void. i'm glad i got this out years ago with my dad before he croaked recently, but the finality of it and realizing how badly he completely fucked the world up (not just me) and suffered zero consequences for it is a bit of a mindfuck. you could make a domino meme with that dipshit causing isla vista and god knows what else.
