What I don't understand about Asians is the extreme and deeply rooted shame culture. It's like 180 degrees difference from being an individualist who doesn't care at all what anyone thinks. From the perspective of the latter, the typical mindset of that seems just like pointless self-cuckoldry. Is it because of their ancestors having endured thousands of years of oppressive rule, whereby the appearance of conformity is an absolute must, lest the taller blades of grass be cut by the sword of the emperor?
