The decrepit boomer in this situation didn't mislead you intentionally, but you're misinterpreting the validity of his information due to a combo of mistaking age/experience for wisdom and by also not accounting for the differences in motivations between someone who has something to live for/improve and someone who is washed up and looking for one last gummer before he dies.Someone being at the tail end of life/the grind can just say fuck it do drugs and kill yourself because they have nothing to live for, he would not have said that at an earlier age and if he did he would not have even made it to his age.My advice here is to grind like crazy right now (in case these therapies are going to be exorbitantly expensive) and take careful care of your health and longevity, breakthroughs are happening at a rapid pace for significantly extending human life and a few years will be the difference between missing that train or not.
