In some countries it can be as high as 60% of all spending. It's insane because most of the people collecting these pensions retired at a very early age, sometimes around 45-50, back when retirement laws were a lot more lenient. So you have a lot of people who started working at 25, retired at 45 after contributing to the system for only 20 years, who are now in their 90s and have been collecting a pension for 50 years. Most of their pension programs don't actually exist anymore which means workers working TODAY cannot earn them, they were too generous so they were all abolished over time. Most large European cities have a small polulation of 80 year old people who collect 10-20k euro a month after taxes from their pensions and spend their money on real state and then rent it out, most of these people own 5-6 apartments each.Leftist parties are always pushing to increase spending and increase benefits, while conservatives push to reduce spending and cut benefits.This puts old people in a position where voting for leftists is in their best interest.Of course they're not stupid and only vote for "moderate" leftists because the actual hard-core leftists want to take away their extra properties because they hate landlords.
