Each letter and combination of letters make a million sounds each and for every rule there's just as many exceptions to that rule. Roman letters are used because of historical reasons, but they don't fit the language well at all, similar to how Kanji are used in Japanese for historical reasons despite Kanji not fitting the language well at all.

All jap words sound the same, you need the chink letters that make up the chinky words to look distinct to make it totally clear in writing. Yes you can glean the meaning from context like gooks but imagine how goofy it would be if you see a word on it's own and it has like 12 different unrelated things it could be.
