If you lived in the Carboniferous, would you rather be:
>a giant insect
>a giant arachnid
>or a giant myriapod
>>
>>84522904
Being alive as arthropleura would probably be nice.
>>
>>84522966
Being a giant armored herbivore is easy mode.
>>
i dont know thats too much to think about
>>
>>84522966
Same thoughts here. They really were beautiful creatures.
>>
>>84522904
I always wondered what it would be like be sent back in time to the carboniferous completely naked
>>
>>84524067
Wouldn't you get hyperoxia because the atmosphere had a lot more oxygen in it back then than it does now?
>>
>>84524189
just breath slower I guess, divers sometimes use tanks which give 30-40% oxygen same as carbonfierous air, however I don't know how much it would cause problems over time.
Honestly I think you're bigger concern is finding food and avoiding giant insects
>>
>>84524189
Nah atmospheric oxygen in the Carboniferous was 30% 35% max, and divers regularly use enriched air nitrox to be able to hold their breaths longer and that can be comprised of up to 40% oxygen.

Interesting didn't know that. But yeah, finding food would be the next big issue because you'd have no way to know what's poisonous and what isn't. There wouldn't be any "safe" foods like mammals or birds that are definitely not poisonous. You'd just have to take some risks, eat some things, and hope you don't die I guess. Once you find enough stuff that didn't kill you or make you sick you could probably just stick to eating the same things everyday.
>>
>>84524067
me too minus the naked part. what would you do?
>>
>>84524386
Huamans would be able to breath, but after a while might suffer from oxygen toxicity over a prolonged period, as our bodies are not adapted to neutralize that many free radical oxygen species (ROS) generated from that concentration. Also... you run the risk of shit just burning really intensely if you tried to start fires, since there is so much oxygen to add to the equation.

Would definitely want to be the eagle sized fucking dragonfly... as your basically the apex predator of everything that isn't super armored.

You fool, I hate you
>>
>>84524523
I would scream and start running, in every scenario I have envisioned
>>
>>84524550
what if you were sent back in time to colonize it but were abandoned? what would you do in your free time?
>>
>>84524204
>>84524433
I mean I don't think there's any chance the dragonfly relatives are poisonous, so you could probably eat those pretty easily. Similarly the scorpions are also probably fine if you avoid the tails (people eat modern scorpions all the time and avoid the venom by doing that). The millipedes are most likely gonna be poisonous but it may not be potent enough to harm you since arthropods have far simpler immune systems which would make the need for super effective poisons relatively null. As for the plans, I have got absolutely no clue, some ferns are edible I think, but I probably wouldn't chance it.

you can always hold your breath for longer, or maybe fucking like rabbits will cause evolution to adapt humans to the higher oxygen concentration

super sized arachnid webs would be awesome and powerful since bugs are retarded, so arachnid for me

>The Carboniferous Period

I want to start a band with this name

Arthropleura would be nightmare mode in the juvenile stage, easy mode as an adult. Pulmonoscorpius would be hard mode all the way through. Meganeura would be the hardest of all in the larval stage but the most fun as an adult because you get to fly and have a high hunting success rate. I hope that we find fossils of a real giant spider after Megarachne turned out to be a eurypterid.
