But in the wired (AKA the internet, which can also be read as a metaphor for simply the internal world and this is the major theme of Lain how the internet became a sort of extension or surrogate for the internal world and it all blends together into one thing) she is unleashed and feels as though her true "self" can come out and be whatever she wishes. There she is a "god" that encompasses all human experience. At the heart of Lain is this intense schizoid struggle between internal and external. That is why her goal is breaking down the barrier between the wired and the real world i.e. breaking down the barrier between internal and external identity.Lain actually shares a lot of DNA with many other things from its era like Eva and All About Lily Chou Chou. You can clearly see the kind of feelings that dominated this time and how they came about.Anyway I think Lain is really not that popular with zoomers from what I can tell despite their tendency to want to co-opt millennial things often, yes, without really understanding them (not that, in this case, people at the time understood it well either). It is a distinctly millennial show that is very emblematic of the time period it was made but also deals with a very specific mental condition.
