ITT: statistics that spark joy. I'll start.

Those un predictions always overperform
>>
i was watching a podcast on the birth rates the other day. theres really no way to fix it at this point and the reality is its not a great idea to actually have kids now because by the time theyre working age theyre going to get completely ass rammed with taxes to support all the old people. the only possible way to help ease the situation is literally ai robots, there is no other way to fix it

My guess is that pensions and maybe other social services will eventually collapse or become so underfunded that they might as well not exist. Right now countries keep pushing back the consequences by increasing the retirement age and so on, but eventually it won't be enough.
>>
>>84606264
east asia is going to be the ones dealing with this first. whatever happens to south korea and japan is going to be echoed everywhere. it really gets worse and worse the more detailed you get, like there arent going to be enough young people doing hard manual labor jobs and maintaining basic functions of every day life, it all just slowly decays. without ai robots we are legit fucked

I'm sure that's part of the current robot & AI hype, but right now it doesn't seem to come close to what's needed to truly replace humans broadly. Maybe someday there will be a real breakthrough, but by then it might be too late.
>>
>>84606251
Or maybe, just maybe, we could try to design an economic system that doesn't depend on infinite growth.
>>
>>84606792
Nobody wants that. Everyone is free to downscale and go live in a hut in the middle of nowhere living from basic subsistence activity like fishing. But 90% of whoever is in those conditions leaves the moment they can.
>>
>>84606796
You're inventing a false dichotomy.
>>
>>84606796
NTA, but there might be some middle ground. Besides, we might not have a say in the matter since growth might be tied to demographics and to resource availability and both are rapidly waning. Apparently, several crucial resources such as copper will become increasingly difficult to obtain in the next few decades, which could lead to a crisis. And that's not to mention environmental stuff, oil etc.
>>
>>84606806
>You're inventing a false dichotomy.
No, I'm pointing out something very real. No one wants to get poorer. You don't really want to stop economic growth, because you don't want to deal with the consequences. Are you willing to give up on all the technology, medical services and comforts you have? Do you want to live like the average person does in a country that has 50% the real median income as yours?
>>
>>84606830
You have a limited imagination. Medical services, technology, and comforts don't require an economic system dependent on infinite growth.
>>
>>84606876
>Medical services, technology, and comforts don't require an economic system dependent on infinite growth
Yes they do. The only countries worth living in all have massive GDP per capita levels. It costs a shitload of money to afford any of it.
>>
>>84606881
Nobody is arguing that people want to be poorer or give up medicine and technology. The question is whether a society can maintain high living standards without requiring endless expansion to avoid collapse.

A modern economy can still innovate, improve healthcare, automate labor, and increase efficiency even in a stable or declining population environment. Productivity growth is not the same thing as population growth.

The current problem is that many pension systems, housing markets, and debt-based financial systems were built on assumptions of continuous expansion. That doesn't mean those assumptions are laws of nature.
>>
>>84606317
they're going to displace all the office job faggots with email jobs via ai and in turn those workers will have to get a real job like repairing power lines
>>
>>84607763
We'll see. I don't doubt that it will happen to some extent, it already is, but I'm not convinced that this displacement will be sufficient. Maybe someday AI will be good enough to do that en masse, but right now it still has a long way to go.
>>
If we can't figure this out then we don't even deserve to inhabit the planet anymore. Just chalk it up to nature doing its thing.
>>
The billionaires are gonna have to part with their billions, that's another option.
They need to stop locking into greed loops and actually figure out ways to distribute wealth.
>>
>>84607808
Blindly distributing wealth to poor people doesn't actually solve anything. Poor people are poor because they are stupid and lazy. There will always be stupid and lazy people, even more so in the future given modern dysgenic trends.

>IF YOU DONT WANT MOUNTAINS OF PLASTIC JUNK YOU HAVE TO GO LIVE IN A MUD HUT BECAUSE... YOU JUST DO, OKAY???
you're dumb as hell
>Nobody wants that
a lot of people want it. it has been achieved before. steady-state economies are possible, desirable, and very important for quality of life
>>
>>84606881
GDP is a meaningless abstraction. America has a very high GDP but the quality of life is absolute shit. big line goes up, which is somehow important to you.
>>
>>84606295
I cannot be certain that what happens in South Korea and Japan will serve as a global forecast, but I am certain that everything that unfolds in these two most developed countries in Asia will shape the future of Asia. Therefore, the future of Asia is bleak.
>>
>>84607818
Who said to blindly distribute wealth to random poor people? Also poor artists are stupid and lazy? Nah. You must be the person who got accused of having zero imagination. Oh also jumping to conclusions. Just think, you don't need to deny everything instantly.

i live in south korea
go to seoul or tokyo and ask passersby what they think about the future
over 80% of people will answer that they cannot see a bright future
the zoomers in south korea and japan are all doomers
right next to us exists a terrible communist totalitarian state composed of 1.5 billion subhumans who defecate and urinate in the streets in broad daylight, and the us continues to extort money from us wtf
the economy is worsening, prices are rising steeply, and only taxes are increasing
we might become the first society in human history composed entirely of the elderly

china is quite literally the only thing giving me hope for the future of mankind. the west has fallen into decadence and decay.
>>
>>84607906
China is the future world hegemon, no doubt. I've thought a lot about trying to imigrate there, find myself a nice Chinese girl. I dislike a lot of things about their culture, though.
