I was in a stream community, got to know people over the months, chatted a few times a week in the general. Eventually people started DMing me, even sending friend requests. Wasn't looking for any of that or expecting to make friends, I was just in a place where we had something in common and ended up seeing we had more in common over time.
Making these online friends lead to meeting others and partially due to them having good things to say about me, this one normally shy girl added me. Invited me to come hang out someday too. By that point we'd already talked about stuff we liked, our goals for the future. So even without chatting 24/7 I ended up getting befriended by people.
Truth is a lot of people are online hoping to meet those that like similar things, to have someone to talk to about one or more topics that really matter to them, but since a lot of them are also shy it can take time for them to get to know you and open up. Maybe more important than that: people can only find you if you're putting yourself out there in new places at least a few times a week.
