Its just that I think the WAY those concepts were brought into the story at times felt a little fan-service-y or ooc for them, but I guess to a point that was the goal. Asuka definitely changed the most, but all the characters feel a little more mature/less self-centered in the rebuilds than in the orginal series and EoE. It feels like they grew up along with Anno, if that makes any sense, which in and of itself isn't bad at all, it just sort of made the series feel different. Overall, a lot of the rebuilds is about how you can change and grow and overcome your struggles and how you can become better. Much like all of Evangelion, but the most on the nose, I'd say (unless we're counting original series ending). But I do think that sentiment is beautiful, I just don't always like how the movies make it happen. Its definitely more hopeful than EoE I'd say. It seems more mature. I just feel like it feels less like Evangelion, and some of the characters, I don't fully recognize. Again, this makes sense given the whole parallel universes plotline, but maybe its mostly nostalgia that made me connect less to it. Philosophically, it still deals with the same themes and does so very well. Its Anno, after all. Its a personal thing for me ALSO if you're a fan of Anno's work and also like live action movies, you should check out his movie Love & Pop based on a book. It was his first live action project if I remember right. I watched it with subtitles on youtube a couple years ago and liked it a lot.
