A little bit of both. Though this duel was agreed upon on the basis of friendly competitive spirit, there is a real risk of keeping a scar if your defense isn't where it's supposed to be. And of course, not all duels are friendly in nature, they are also used to settle differences and scores if needed. Over here we call it "Mensur".

Funny thing is, though I translate "Mensur" with duel, in German it is very important to make a distinction between Mensur and Duell. See, an actual duel can result in death, whereas a Mensur at most results in an injury. The reason this is important is because the church was (and still is) known to excommunicate partakers of duels, which would be a huge problem for theology students or Christian fraternity members in general.
