When you think about it water is like air for fish. This means our air is their water, so if you take a fish out of water you are really putting them in water so when they die in the air it's because they drowned. It also means that when we look at fish in a pond, really the pond is to the air as an island is to the ocean, so we are underwater looking at the fish on their island.
