They already knew they were canceled when the candy bars episode came out.
What's weird about it is that it wasn't their fault. The nightmare vision had ruins of obviously new york and 9/11 had just happened. So they told them to change that and they did. But nick aired the wrong tape anyway.

Could be I'm sure it was just the final straw in a long list of parental complaints, poor viewership to them moving the time slot and god knows what ever production hiccups or delays because of working with a first time director. Nick obviously did not want it to succeed. Futurama faced a lot of the same issues actually. But obviously they were better connected with their network.
