Well it's definitely not because of any kind of pervasive psyop.
a central tenet of contemporary liberalism is that traditional roles and expectations for the sexes are oppressive, artificial, and imposed upon children to their detriment. therefore consciously subverting them means being free and authentic. what was held as natural is unnatural and wrong and vice versa - if you're not some kind of queer you can't be authentic, you're a *phony* and hence can never be cool.
